Volatile constituents of aerial parts of two Mediterranean species of Inula: Inula crithmoides L. and I. verbascifolia (Willd.) Hausskn. (Asteraceae)

Inula crithmoides L. grows along the Mediterranean coasts and is used as an edible vegetable as the young leaves or shoots are eaten raw, cooked or pickled. Inula verbascifolia (Willd.) Hausskn. is a quite localised species growing mainly along the Adriatic Sea coasts. In this study the volatile components of the aerial part of both species are described. Gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of 41 components in I. crithmoides and 75 compounds in I. verbascifolia, respectively, and a very different profile in the composition of the two species. New acetophenone glucosides isolated from extracts of Helichrysum italicum with antiinflammatory activity.

Three new acetophenone glucosides (4-6), three known aglycons (1-3), and a benzo-gamma-pyrone glucoside (7) were isolated from the CH(2)Cl(2), EtOAc, and BuOH extracts from the aerial parts of Helichrysum italicum. All the compounds tested showed antiinflammatory activity in a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced mouse ear edema test, and the ID(50) value of compound 2, the most active compound, was determined.
Cytotoxic Activity of Some Natural and Synthetic ent-Kauranes

Atractyligenin (1) and several synthetic derivatives were tested and found to be active against tumor cell replication. Compound 1 was readily converted to the 2,15-diketo (3) or 15-keto (4) derivatives, which contain an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone. Compounds 3 and 4 showed significant cytotoxic activity against all six tested cancer cell lines and were most potent against 1A9 ovarian cancer cells with EC50 values of 0.2 and 0.3 microM, respectively. These two 1-analogues are promising lead compounds for further investigation.

The activity of three prenylhydroquinone glucosides (1-3) and four caffeoylquinic esters (4-7), obtained from Phagnalon rupestre, on elastase release, myeloperoxidase activity and superoxide and leukotriene B(4) production from polymorphonuclear leukocytes was determined. 4,5-Dicaffeoylquinic acid strongly inhibited elastase release with an IC(50) value of 4.8 microM. Methylated caffeoylquinic derivatives were the most potent inhibitors of myeloperoxidase (IC(50) near 60 microM), whereas both methylated and free carboxyl isomers inhibited superoxide production with similar potency (IC(50) between 27 and 42 microM). Sesquiterpenes from Centaurea aspera

Abstract The aerial parts of two subspecies of Centaurea aspera L. (Asteraceae) yielded the germacranolides 1a – h , 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 , the elemane derivatives 6d and 6f , the lignan matairesinol, the degraded terpene loliolide, and the onopordopicrin–valine dimeric adduct 7 . From these, compounds 1e , 3 and 6d are natural products. The chemical composition of the two subspecies is very similar, a circumstance which does not support a taxonomic subdivision of the species.

Analysis of the butanol-soluble fraction from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Phagnalon rupestre (Asteraceae) has led to the isolation of seven phenolic compounds. Budlein A has been reported to exert some analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, we have evaluated its effect on LPS-induced leukocyte recruitment in vivo and the mechanisms involved in its anti-inflammatory activity. In vivo, intravital videomicroscopy was used to determine the effects of budlein A on LPS-induced leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions in the murine cremasteric microcirculation. In vitro, the effects of budlein A on LPS-induced cytokine, chemokine and nitrites release, T-cell proliferative response as well as cell adhesion molecule expression (CAM) were evaluated.
