Intrinsic backgrounds from Rn and Kr in the XENON100 experiment

In this paper, we describe the XENON100 data analyses used to assess the target-intrinsic background sources radon ([InlineMediaObject not available: see fulltext.]), thoron ([InlineMediaObject not available: see fulltext.]) and krypton ([InlineMediaObject not available: see fulltext.]). We detail the event selections of high-energy alpha particles and decay-specific delayed coincidences. We search for signals of magnetically-induced effects in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We apply two different methods. One is a search for sets of events that show a correlation between their arrival direction and the inverse of their energy, which would be expected if they come from the same point-like source, they have the same electric charge and their deflection is relatively small and coherent. We refer to these sets of events as "multiplets". The second method, called "thrust", is a principal axis analysis aimed to detect the elongated patterns in a region of interest. Was there a lunar eclipse that could have influenced the outcome of the Battle of Alesia? This is the argument developed in the book by Alain Deyber and David Romeuf, «Les Derniers Jours du Siège d'Alésia». Having verified the existence of an eclipse on the date given by the authors and based on the latest publications as well as on the scientific consensus, we conduct a critical study on the chronology of the siege and on the ethnological arguments, even ethno-astronomical of the authors.

The elaboration of a restaurant menu as a text aiming at seducing and at convincing visitors, infers that it does not merely enumerates various dishes among which we are to choose from, but that it is a rhetorical production whose processes need to be analysed and whose function needs to be understood. The corpus being studied consists of gourmet menus selected from about twenty fine restaurants. It certainly enables us to observe the main figures of speech (metaphors, metonymies); above all, it reveals the great variety of the rhetorical gear in use : analogies, transgressions, systems of values are as many means of creating the "genuine" flavour of food.
