Testate amoebae community analysis as a tool to assess biological impacts of peatland use

As most ecosystems, peatlands have been heavily exploited for different human purposes. For example, in Finland the majority is under forestry, agriculture or peat mining use. Peatlands play an important role in carbon storage, water cycle, and are a unique habitat for rare organisms. Such properties highlight their environmental importance and the need for their restoration. To monitor the success of peatland restoration sensitive indicators are needed. Apple tree bloom onset in Germany has advanced by 2 days/decade in 1951-2014 and by 3 days/decade in 1988-2014, behaving similarly in respect to its evolution since 1951 and its sensitivity to temperature to other species’ phenological spring phases. The evolution however was not linear; by conducting a split moving-window dissimilarity analysis (SMWDA) we were able to detect the “break-period” 1987-1989 which coincides with a breakpoint that has been identified in the phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Alternative method for binary shape alignment of non-symmetrical shapes based on minimal enclosing box

Proposed is a novel method based on the minimal enclosing box (MEB) to determine the canonical orientation associated with a three-dimensional binary shape. It is suggested that, when the shape has no clear distinctive features and two or more of the eigenvalues are similar, this method is more suitable than the commonly used method based on principal component analysis (PCA). An experiment is performed with shapes of human livers by measuring the degree on which a prototypical image (atlas) matches to a new shape after alignment by PCA, minimal area projection (MAP), and MEB showing that in this case MEB outperforms the usual PCA-based alignment method and also the MAP method.

PEM FC Single Cell Based on a 3-D Printed Plastic Housing and Experimental Validation with the Mathematical Model

Abstract This paper presents the design, modelling, and testing of a PEM single fuel cell based on the use of 3D printing. The design of the housings was made of SolidWorks, while MATLAB/SIMULINK were used to model performance. The fabricated cell performed satisfactorily with no leaks of gas, showing that the 3D printing method can be used in the additive manufacturing of fuel cells thus leading to significant cost savings.

In the application of CNC feed drives it is desirable to predict the servo performance. By using computer simulation techniques it is possible to construct an accurate model of the servo drive. This simulation procedure makes it possible to anticipate machine design problems and correct them. The optical multiplexer board is one of the elements present in the read out chain of the tile calorimeter in ATLAS experiment. Due to radiation effects, two optical fibers with the same data come out from the front end boards to this board, which has to decide in real time which one carries good data and pass them to the read out driver motherboard for processing.
