Abstract Objective We aimed to evaluate the clinical utility and predictive value of stimulatory (TSAb) and blocking (TBAb) TSH receptor antibodies in the management of Graves’ disease (GD). Methods Hundred well-defined, consecutive, unselected, untreated hyperthyroid patients with GD were enrolled in a prospective two-year trial. Methimazole (MMI) was administered for 24 weeks according to baseline serum concentrations of free T3/free T4. Starting dose was 5–30 mg/day. Through a titration regimen, this dose was respectively tapered or increased at each subsequent study visit as the patient became euthyroid or remained hyperthyroid. Breast cancer in previously thyroidectomized patients: which thyroid disorders are a risk factor?

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there are thyroid diseases in which breast cancer will appear later as well as the role of autoimmunity. This was a retrospective observational study. A total of 410 females (thyroid surgery and later breast cancer) and 524 females (thyroid surgery only) were compared with regard to pathological thyroid findings, thyroid hormones, thyroid autoimmunity and type of breast cancer. Thyroid autoimmunity, especially antithyroid peroxidase antibodies, significantly increased the risk of breast cancer (p < 0.01); however, this was not true for other thyroid diseases, including thyroid cancer. The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) was described in 1983 as a clinical entity characterized by venous and arterial thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, and recurrent fetal loss. The serological markers of APS are antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) directed mainly against anionic phospholipids, usually cardiolipin but also phosphatidylserine. AbstractThe activity of recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) on the in vitro lymphocyte proliferative response to phytohemagglutinin mitogen was investigated in healthy HLA-BB, DR3 positive and negative subjects. the response to mitogen, significantly decreased in HLA-BB, DR3 positive subjects, was completely restored by adding rIL-2. Moreover, in HLA-BB, DR3 positive subjects the in vitro treatment with rIL-2 significantly increased the reduced frequency of mitogen responsive T lymphocyte precursors, as assessed by limiting dilution analysis. Autoimmune biomarkers in glaucoma patients.

There is growing evidence showing an autoimmune involvement in the pathogenesis of glaucoma, and that alterations in natural occurring autoantibody levels play a key role. The upregulation of autoantibodies can be associated with fatal conditions, but several studies demonstrate that natural autoantibodies entail also protective characteristics and influence the protein expression of neuroretinal cells. A disbalance of natural occurring autoantibodies may shift the physiological equilibrium of protective immunity leading to a predisposition for developing glaucoma. This article highlights recent advances in understanding of autoimmune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of glaucoma.

Compromised central tolerance of ICA69 induces multiple organ autoimmunity

For reasons not fully understood, patients with an organ-specific autoimmune disease have increased risks of developing autoimmune responses against other organs/tissues. We identified ICA69, a known β-cell autoantigen in Type 1 diabetes, as a potential common target in multi-organ autoimmunity. NOD mice immunized with ICA69 polypeptides exhibited exacerbated inflammation not only in the islets, but also in the salivary glands.
