APXS and MIMOS IIA: Planetary and terrestrial applications

2011

Both Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and the Miniaturized Moessbauer Spectrometer (MIMOS II) have shown their performances in space missions and terrestrial applications. Taking advantage of the challenges of space missions both instruments have become very powerful tools, even small in mass and dimensions.

The optical system of the A4 laser Compton polarimeter

2007

Compton backscattering polarimeters for experiments at sub-mA accelerator facilities use optical cavities to increase the laser light intensity. Therefore, parasitic properties of the optical elements have an increased influence on the polarization state of the light and need to be analyzed carefully. This contribution shows examples of such difficulties and the possible solutions, found during the setup of the A4 Compton backscattering polarimeter at the MAMI accelerator facility of the university of Mainz.

Dosimetric study of the 15mm ROPES eye plaque

2004

The main aim of this paper is to make a study of dose-rate distributions obtained around the 15 mm, radiation oncology physics and engineering services, Australia (ROPES) eye plaque loaded with {sup 125}I model 6711 radioactive seeds. In this study, we have carried out a comparison of the dose-rate distributions obtained by the algorithm used by the Plaque Simulator (PS) (BEBIG GmbH, Berlin, Germany) treatment planning system with those obtained by means of the Monte Carlo method for the ROPES eye plaque. A simple method to obtain the dose-rate distributions in a treatment planning system via the superposition of the dose-rate distributions of a seed placed in the eye plaque has been develo…

Comparison of quantitative analysis techniques for the determination of heat seal lacquer layers on aluminum blister foils

2010

For decades a gravimetric method has been common standard for the determination of heat seal lacquers on aluminum blister foils. With the availability of appropriate techniques such as interferometric, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopic (IRRAS), beta backscatter, impedance spectroscopic and eddy current techniques respectively, more efficient determinations can be foreseen which are subject of the present communication. The different methods were compared to each other regarding parameters required for validation of analytical procedures according to the ICH guidelines Q2 (R1) such as linearity, precision, accuracy, robustness and quantitation limits. The interferometric, IRRAS an…

Semipermeable membrane to retain platinum atoms in the electrodeposition process of alpha spectrometry sources

1998

Abstract In earlier work alpha sources electrodeposited on stainless steel backings were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) finding that during the electrodeposition process large quantities of platinum from the anode were deposited on the cathode surface jointly with the actinides. In the present work, a method to retain platinum atoms using an electrodeposition cell with a semipermeable membrane located between anode and cathode is proposed and tested. The XRF and RBS of alpha sources electrodeposited using this method show that there is less platinum on the stainless steel backing, thereby improving the quality of sources to be measured …

X-ray powder diffraction pattern for glucopyranosylsorbitol and glucopyranosylmannitol dihydrate

1997

X-ray powder data are given for glucopyranosylsorbitol, C12H24O11, and glucopyranosylmannitol dihydrate, C12H24O11 * 2H2O. Refined unit cell parameters for glucopyranosylsorbitol are: a=0.9124(4) nm, b=1.1336(5) nm, c=0.7232(3) nm, and β=91.23(4)° in space group P21 and those for glucopyranosylmannitol dihydrate are a=2.2579(15) nm, b=1.0016(5) nm, and c=0.7584(5) nm in space group P212121.

Electron Diffraction Reinvestigation of CdCr2Se4 and ZnCr2-xVx</su…

2013

Crystal structure of two spinel single crystals CdCr2Se4 and ZnCr2-xVxSe4 have been reinvestigated using automated electron diffraction tomography method with beam precession. 3D reciprocal space have been reconstructed base on recorded tilt series. For both samples crystal structure was refined and the cubic symmetry with space group Fd-3m was confirmed. No additional electron potential has been located beside occupied atom sites.

Light absorption in silicon quantum dots embedded in silica

2009

The photon absorption in Si quantum dots (QDs) embedded in SiO2 has been systematically investigated by varying several parameters of the QD synthesis. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) or magnetron cosputtering (MS) have been used to deposit, upon quartz substrates, single layer, or multilayer structures of Si-rich- SiO2 (SRO) with different Si content (43-46 at. %). SRO samples have been annealed for 1 h in the 450-1250 °C range and characterized by optical absorption measurements, photoluminescence analysis, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and x-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. After annealing up to 900 °C SRO films grown by MS show a higher absorption coefficient a…
