Mechanisms of Resistance to Ceftolozane/Tazobactam in Pseudomonas aeruginosa : Results of the GERPA Multicenter Study

ABSTRACT Resistance mechanisms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T) were assessed on a collection of 420 nonredundant strains nonsusceptible to ceftazidime (MIC > 8 μg/ml) and/or imipenem (>4 μg/ml), collected by 36 French hospital laboratories over a one-month period (the GERPA study). Rates of C/T resistance (MIC > 4/4 μg/ml) were equal to 10% in this population (42/420 strains), and 23.2% (26/112) among the isolates resistant to both ceftazidime and imipenem. The biofilms of the wooden tables used for the acidification of the curd were investigated for PDO Provola dei Nebrodi cheese, a traditional stretched cheese made in eastern Sicily (southern Italy) from raw cows’ milk. To this purpose the wooden tables of four dairy facilities were analysed for their microbiota by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and a combined culture-independent and -dependent microbiological approach. SEM inspection showed an almost continuous biofilm formation. MiSeq Illumina analysis identified 8 phyla, 16 classes, 25 orders, 47 families and 50 genera. This article studies the operation of a new process for the production of biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHAs) at different applied organic load rates (OLRs). The process is based on the aerobic enrichment of activated sludge to obtain mixed cultures able to store PHAs at high rates and yields. A mixture of acetic, lactic, and propionic acids at different concentrations (in the range 8.5-31.25 gCOD/L) was fed every 2 h in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Abstract A mathematical model based on Weibull parameters was built to describe the joint effect of temperature and pH on thermal inactivation of Bacillus cereus spores (strain INRA TZ415). The effect of these factors on Weibull model parameters ( β , 1/ α ) was also studied. Heat inactivation tests were carried out in acidified carrot broth as vegetable substrate, following a full factorial design at four levels for temperature (80, 85, 90 and 95 °C) and pH (6.2, 5.8, 5.2 and 4.7).
