Structured Output SVM for Remote Sensing Image Classification

2011

Traditional kernel classifiers assume independence among the classification outputs. As a consequence, each misclassification receives the same weight in the loss function. Moreover, the kernel function only takes into account the similarity between input values and ignores possible relationships between the classes to be predicted. These assumptions are not consistent for most of real-life problems. In the particular case of remote sensing data, this is not a good assumption either. Segmentation of images acquired by airborne or satellite sensors is a very active field of research in which one tries to classify a pixel into a predefined set of classes of interest (e.g. water, grass, trees,…

Geometric Algebra Rotors for Sub-symbolic Coding of Natural Language Sentences

2007

A sub-symbolic encoding methodology for natural language sentences is presented. The procedure is based on the creation of an LSA-inspired semantic space and associates rotation operators derived from Geometric Algebra to word bigrams of the sentence. The operators are subsequently applied to an orthonormal standard basis of the created semantic space according to the order in which words appear in the sentence. The final rotated basis is then coded as a vector and its orthogonal part constitutes the sub-symbolic coding of the sentence. Preliminary experimental results for a classification task, compared with the traditional LSA methodology, show the effectiveness of the approach.

The Elephant in the Machine: Proposing a New Metric of Data Reliability and its Application to a Medical Case to Assess Classification Reliability

2020

In this paper, we present and discuss a novel reliability metric to quantify the extent a ground truth, generated in multi-rater settings, as a reliable basis for the training and validation of machine learning predictive models. To define this metric, three dimensions are taken into account: agreement (that is, how much a group of raters mutually agree on a single case)

Application of model quality evaluation to systems biology

2008

Application of model quality evaluation to the quasispecies models is presented. These models are useful for the analysis of the DNA and RNA evolution and for the description of the population dynamics of viruses and bacteria. An estimate of the parameters together with their interval of variability is computed and the quality evaluation is tested on the basis of the model prediction error capability.

The Ground State Electronic Energy of Benzene.

2020

We report on the findings of a blind challenge devoted to determining the frozen-core, full configuration interaction (FCI) ground state energy of the benzene molecule in a standard correlation-consistent basis set of double-$\zeta$ quality. As a broad international endeavour, our suite of wave function-based correlation methods collectively represents a diverse view of the high-accuracy repertoire offered by modern electronic structure theory. In our assessment, the evaluated high-level methods are all found to qualitatively agree on a final correlation energy, with most methods yielding an estimate of the FCI value around $-863$ m$E_{\text{H}}$. However, we find the root-mean-square devia…

Realistic Implementation of the Particle Model for the Visualization of Nanoparticle Precipitation and Growth

2019

An application for visualizing the aggregation of structureless atoms is presented. The application allows us to demonstrate on a qualitative basis, as well as by quantitatively monitoring the aggregate surface/volume ratio, that the enhanced reactivity of nanoparticles can be connected with their large specific surface. It is suggested that, along with the use of geometric analogies, this bottom-up approach can be effective in discussing the enhanced reactivity proprieties of nanoparticles. The application is based on a two-dimensional realistic dynamic model where atoms move because of their thermal and interaction potential energies, and the trajectories are determined by solving numeric…

Nuclear structure of97Yin the interacting boson fermion plus broken pair model and the nature of the 3.523 MeV high-spin isomer

1998

Nuclear structure of 97Y is described in the interacting boson fermion plus broken pair model, including quasiproton and quasiproton-two-quasineutron configurations in the basis states. In particular, the yrast bands and the decay of the 27/2- high-spin isomer are accounted for in this approach.

A Comparative Ab Initio Thermodynamic Study of Oxygen Vacancies in ZnO and SrTiO3: Emphasis on Phonon Contribution

2013

Using a hybrid Hartree–Fock (HF)-DFT method combined with LCAO basis set and periodic supercell approach, the atomic, electronic structure and phonon properties of oxygen vacancies in ZnO and SrTiO3 were calculated and compared. The important role of a ghost basis function centered at the vacant site and defect spin state for SrTiO3 is discussed. It is shown that the use of hybrid functionals is vital for correct reproduction of defects basic properties. The Gibbs free energy of formation of oxygen vacancies and their considerable temperature dependence has been compared for the two oxides. These calculations were based on the polarizability model for the soft mode temperature behavior in S…

Using the Theory of Regular Functions to Formally Prove the ε-Optimality of Discretized Pursuit Learning Algorithms

2014

Learning Automata LA can be reckoned to be the founding algorithms on which the field of Reinforcement Learning has been built. Among the families of LA, Estimator Algorithms EAs are certainly the fastest, and of these, the family of Pursuit Algorithms PAs are the pioneering work. It has recently been reported that the previous proofs for e-optimality for all the reported algorithms in the family of PAs have been flawed. We applaud the researchers who discovered this flaw, and who further proceeded to rectify the proof for the Continuous Pursuit Algorithm CPA. The latter proof, though requires the learning parameter to be continuously changing, is, to the best of our knowledge, the current …

Orbits of bounded bijective operators and Gabor frames

2020

This paper is a contribution to frame theory. Frames in a Hilbert space are generalizations of orthonormal bases. In particular, Gabor frames of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$, which are made of translations and modulations of one or more windows, are often used in applications. More precisely, the paper deals with a question posed in the last years by Christensen and Hasannasab about the existence of overcomplete Gabor frames, with some ordering over $\mathbb{Z}$, which are orbits of bounded operators on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. Two classes of overcomplete Gabor frames which cannot be ordered over $\mathbb{Z}$ and represented by orbits of operators in $GL(L^2(\mathbb{R}))$ are given. Some results about opera…
