Changes in Serum and Lipoprotein Fatty Acids of Growing Rats Fed Protein-Deficient Diets with Low or Adequate Linolenic Acid Concentrations
1992
The effects of a protein-deficient diet associated with sunflower oil [adequate in 18:2(n-6), poor in 18:3(n-3)] or soybean oil [adequate in both 18:2(n-6) and 18:3(n-3)] on lipid serum and lipoprotein compositions were studied in growing rats. Four groups of rats were fed different diets: SFC (20% casein + 5% sunflower oil); SFd (2% casein + 5% sunflower oil); SC (20% casein + 5% soybean oil); Sd (2% casein + 5% soybean oil). After 28 d, both protein-deficient groups exhibited low concentrations of protein, phospholipid, triacylglycerol and total cholesterol in serum and VLDL. Compared with rats fed 20% casein diets, those fed low protein diets had lower 18:2(n-6) and 20:4(n-6) in phosphol…
Formulation, process conditions, and biological evaluation of dairy mixed gels containing fava bean and milk proteins: Effect on protein retention in…
2019
International audience; Food formulation and process conditions can indirectly influence AA digestibility and bioavailability. Here we investigated the effects of formulation and process conditions used in the manufacture of novel blended dairy gels (called "mixed gels" here) containing fava bean (Vicia faba) globular proteins on both protein composition and metabolism when given to young rats. Three mixed dairy gels containing casein micelles and fava bean proteins were produced either by chemical acidification (A) with glucono-δ-lactone (GDL) or by lactic acid fermentation. Fermented gels containing casein and fava bean proteins were produced without (F) or with (FW) whey proteins. The AA…
Lunasin-induced behavioural effects in mice: Focus on the dopaminergic system
2013
The present study for the first time is devoted to identify central effects of synthetic lunasin, a 43 amino acid peptide. A markedly expressed neuroleptic/cataleptic effect was observed at low (0.1-10 nmol/mouse) centrally administered doses in male C57Bl/6 mice. Lunasin considerably reduced the amphetamine hyperlocomotion but weakly apomorphine climbing behaviour. No influence on ketamine and bicuculline effects was observed. Binding assay studies demonstrated modest affinity of lunasin for the dopamine D₁ receptor (Ki=60 ± 15 μM). In a functional assay of cAMP accumulation on live cells lunasin antagonised apomorphine effect on D₁ receptor activation (pEC₅₀=6.1 ± 0.3), but had no effect …
Intolerance of Cow's Milk and Chronic Constipation in Children
1998
Background Chronic diarrhea is the most common gastrointestinal symptom of intolerance of cow's milk among children. On the basis of a prior open study, we hypothesized that intolerance of cow's milk can also cause severe perianal lesions with pain on defecation and consequent constipation in young children. Methods We performed a double-blind, crossover study comparing cow's milk with soy milk in 65 children (age range, 11 to 72 months) with chronic constipation (defined as having one bowel movement every 3 to 15 days). All had been referred to a pediatric gastroenterology clinic and had previously been treated with laxatives without success; 49 had anal fissures and perianal erythema or e…
Dietary protein deficiency affects n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids hepatic storage and very low density lipoprotein transport in rats on diff…
1994
Fatty livers and the similarity between the skin lesions in kwashiorkor and those described in experimental essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency have led to the hypothesis that protein and EFA deficiencies may both occur in chronic malnutrition. The relationship between serum very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and hepatic lipid composition was studied after 28 d of protein depletion to determine the interactions between dietary protein levels and EFA availability. Rats were fed purified diets containing 20 or 2% casein and 5% fat as either soybean oil rich in EFA, or salmon oil rich in eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, or hydrogenated coconut, oil poor in EFA. Animal…

This is an Open Access article under the CC BY 4.0 licenseBackground Underweight, overweight, and obesity in childhood and adolescence are associated with adverse health consequences throughout the life-course. Our aim was to estimate worldwide trends in mean body-mass index (BMI) and a comprehensive set of BMI categories that cover underweight to obesity in children and adolescents, and to compare trends with those of adults. Methods We pooled 2416 population-based studies with measurements of height and weight on 128·9 million participants aged 5 years and older, including 31·5 million aged 5–19 years. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model …
Oscillatory measurements for salad dressings stabilized with modified starch, xanthan gum, and locust bean gum
2006
The rheological properties of low-oil-content food emulsions were analyzed with oscillatory tests within the linear viscoelastic region. The formulations of these salad dressings usually include modified starch because of its low cost and the special creamy texture that it affords. The combination of starch with other natural gums may improve the quality of the product. A reference emulsion containing 4% modified starch and four other formulations in which the starch was partially replaced by xanthan gum (0.4%), locust bean gum (0.4%), and synergistic blends of these gums (0.03 + 0.03% or 0.1 + 0.1%) were formulated. Gels before emulsification were studied for comparative purposes. All syst…
European perch (Perca fluviatilis) fed dietary insect meal (Tenebrio molitor): From a stable isotope perspective
2021
Abstract Stable isotope analysis was conducted to investigate stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N), diet-tissue discrimination factors of carbon (Δ13C) and nitrogen (Δ15Ν). Bayesian mixing models were performed to assess relative contribution of insect meal and other ingredients to the development of tissues of European perch (Perca fluviatilis). Accordingly, four experimental formulations, characterized by the increasing inclusion levels of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae meal (TM) at 0, 6.8, 13.5 and 20.3% as replacement for fishmeal at 0 (TM0), 25 (TM25), 50 (TM50) and 75% (TM75), respectively, were fed to juvenile perch (initial bodyweight, 20.81 ± 3.36 g…
Isolation and Characterization of High-Efficiency Rhizobia From Western Kenya Nodulating With Common Bean.
2021
Common bean is one of the primary protein sources in third-world countries. They form nodules with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia, which have to be adapted to the local soils. Commercial rhizobial strains such as Rhizobium tropici CIAT899 are often used in agriculture. However, this strain failed to significantly increase the common bean yield in many places, including Kenya, due to the local soils’ low pH. We isolated two indigenous rhizobial strains from the nodules of common bean from two fields in Western Kenya that have never been exposed to commercial inocula. We then determined their ability to fix nitrogen in common beans, solubilize phosphorus, and produce indole acetic acid. In greenhou…
Mutational analysis of disulfide bonds in the trypsin-reactive subdomain of a Bowman-Birk-type inhibitor of trypsin and chymotrypsin--cooperative ver…
1998
It is widely believed that protein folding is a hierarchical process proceeding from secondary structure via subdomains and domains towards the complete tertiary structure. Accordingly, protein subdomains should behave as independent folding units. However, this prediction would underestimate the well-established structural significance of tertiary context and domain interfaces in proteins. The principal objective of this work was to distinguish between autonomous and cooperative refolding of protein subdomains by means of mutational analysis. The double-headed Bowman-Birk inhibitor of trypsin and chymotrypsin of known crystal structure was selected for study. The relative orientation of th…
