Fatty Acid Transporter CD36 Mediates Hypothalamic Effect of Fatty Acids on Food Intake in Rats
2013
Subject Areas: carotid arteries; emulsions; fatty acids; gene expression; heparin; hypothalamus; neurons; oxidation.; International audience; Variations in plasma fatty acid (FA) concentrations are detected by FA sensing neurons in specific brain areas such as the hypothalamus. These neurons play a physiological role in the control of food intake and the regulation of hepatic glucose production. Le Foll et al. previously showed in vitro that at least 50% of the FA sensing in ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH) neurons is attributable to the interaction of long chain FA with FA translocase/CD36 (CD36). The present work assessed whether in vivo effects of hypothalamic FA sensing might be partly m…
Sojas pupiņu un smiltsērkšķu ekstraktu saturoša matu kopšanas līdzekļa izstrāde un efektivitātes noteikšana
2018
Simplified Interception/Evaporation Model
2021
It is known that at the event scale, evaporation losses of rainfall intercepted by canopy are a few millimeters, which is often not much in comparison to other stocks in the water balance. Nevertheless, at yearly scale, the number of times that the canopy is filled by rainfall and then depleted can be so large that the interception flux may become an important fraction of rainfall. Many accurate interception models and models that describe evaporation by wet canopy have been proposed. However, they often require parameters that are difficult to obtain, especially for large-scale applications. In this paper, a simplified interception/evaporation model is proposed, which considers a modified …

Caribbean Plate margin evolution: constraints and current problems

Oceanic crust was generated at multiple spreading centres during the Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, forming a "proto-Caribbean" oceanic domain. During the Cretaceous, part of that crustal domain thickened into an oceanic plateau, of petrologic Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR) to Ocean Island Basalt (OIB) affinity. Simultaneously, the South and North American continental plates developed rifting and tholeiitic magmatism in the Middle America region (Venezuela and Cuba). The rifting created space for the proto-Caribbean oceanic domain. Petrological and regional correlations suggest that, beginning in the Cretaceous, the proto-Caribbean domain was involved into two main stages of subduction, referred to …
Another Life
2013
Many writers started their professional lives in very diverse fields before embracing writing, or on the contrary have turned away from writing. The present volume seeks to explore the complex relationship between that ‘other life’ and writing. The aim is to determine whether a writer’s ‘other life’ appears in, influences or even shapes his/her work, and to what extent. What is the part of gestation and that of rupture? A diversity of writers is examined: Patrick Chamoiseau, J. M. Coetzee, Jan J. Dominique, Janet Frame, Amitav Ghosh, L. K. Johnson, Wilson Harris, Dany Laferrière, Yannick Lahens, NourbeSe Philip, Emmelie Prophète, Arundhati Roy, Edward Said, but also Bartolomé de las Casas a…
Systems of attention to childhood education in Latin America and The Caribbean (AL & C)
2019
Ca…
The influence of business groups on board composition in offshore financial multinational enterprises
2023
Based on resource dependence theory we argue for an influence of business groups (BGs) on the board composition of constituent offshore financial multinational enterprises (FMNEs). Using a unique sample of 171 Caribbean FMNEs in an inter-island BG setting, we find BGs’ control in constituent firms to be indicative of the importance of the internal financing and intermediation within the group network. This control leads to a higher proportion of lawyers hired to the boards of directors in BG-constituent firms and supports the argument that lawyers provide skills in complex offshore regulatory frameworks that facilitate BGs’ optimal tax management. Furthermore, we observe that an increased a…
Ecologie moléculaire d'une relation hôte - parasite en contexte insulaire marin. Crabes parasites des oursins spatangues en Mer des Caraïbes
2014
Comparing the population genetic structures of two species documents on the environmental factors and life history traits that shape the dispersal of the individuals. For host-parasite couple, this approach also permits to predict local adaptation of these species. The investigated species in this work are the ectoparasitic crab Dissodactylus primitivus and its sea urchin host Meoma ventricosa, both species being endemic to the Caribbean and neighboring American coasts. Several molecular markers were used, namely microsatellites and cytochrome oxidase I (mitochondrial). Moreover, morphometric analyses (shape) were also done. By studying populations across the Antilles arc and along the Pana…
