Isolated Systolic Hypertension in the Young
2019
Elevated systolic blood pressure with normal diastolic blood pressure is the most prevalent type of hypertension in young people. The prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension reported among youth ranges widely as a result of the differences in population characteristics such as age, ethnicity, and obesity. Even though it is not an unusual condition, there is still debate in the literature about the clinical significance of an isolated increase in systolic blood pressure detected in the first decades of life. The reported phenotypic characteristics of subjects with isolated systolic hypertension are rather scarce and many relevant pieces of information are still elusive. Further studies …
Carcinosarcoma of monoclonal origin arising in a dermoid cyst of ovary: a case report.
2005
Abstract Background Transformation of a cystic benign teratoma of the ovary into a "carcinosarcoma" has very rarely been reported and its histogenetic origin is still debated. Case presentation A case of carcinosarcoma arising from a dermoid cyst is reported. The tumor showed cystic areas delimited by normal squamous epithelium, with transitional areas through dysplastic epithelium to "in situ" and infiltrating squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The sarcomatous component showed compact tissue composed of round cells concentrically arranged around small vessels, spindle, and pleomorphic cells with a high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio. Positive staining for vimentin, alpha smooth muscle actin and CD1…
Follow-up of patients with colonic polyps containing severe atypia and invasive carcinoma. Compliance, recurrence, and survival
1988
Between January 1975 and December 1984 1769 polyps were endoscopically removed from 1219 patients. Eight percent of these patients had polyps containing severe atypia and 5.0% had polyps containing invasive cancer. A close postoperative surveillance program was followed by only a few patients, but compliance improved with longer follow-up intervals. Metachronous polyps were observed with similar frequency in patients with benign polyps (34.8%) and those with polyps containing severe atypia (23.8%) or cancer (41.7%). Patients in whom malignant polyps were endoscopically removed had a 5-year survival rate of 84.3% that did not differ from that of patients' whose polyps contained severe atypia…
Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the renal capsule
1981
We report about an extremely rare case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the renal capsule. The tumor is composed of fibroblast-like cells arranged in a storiform pattern and histiocyte-like cells with multinucleated giant cells, both showing no iron reaction. Characteristic of the histiocytic quality of the tumor are numerous PAS-positive intracytoplasmic droplets which can be identified as erythrophagosomes only under the electron microscope. Emphasis is put on the preoperative differential diagnosis of the tumor from renal cell carcinoma as well as on its histogenesis and prognosis.
Metabolic aggressiveness in benign meningiomas with chromosomal instabilities.
2010
Abstract Meningiomas are often considered benign tumors curable by surgery, but most recurrent meningiomas correspond to histologic benign tumors. Because alterations in chromosome 14 among others have suggested clinical aggressiveness and recurrence, determining both the molecular phenotype and the genetic profile may help distinguish tumors with aggressive metabolism. The aim of this study was to achieve higher specificity in the detection of meningioma subgroups by measuring chromosomal instabilities by fluorescence in situ hybridization and cytogenetics and metabolic phenotypes by high-resolution magic angle spinning spectroscopy. We studied 46 meningioma biopsies with these methodologi…
Cytogenetic analysis and metabolic profiling reveal a subgroup of benign meningiomas with chromosomal instabilities and aggressive metabolism
2010
Meningiomas add up to 30% of Central Nervous System (CNS) tumours. Atypical meningiomas show a high index of recurrence 5 years after complete resection. Sometimes, meningiomas with histological diagnosis of benign meningioma show genetics characteristics of atypical meningioma. Aberrations of chromosomes 1, 14, and 22 are the most frequently reported abnormalities in meningiomas. In this communication we used cytogenetic, FISH, and NMR metabolic profiling for a molecular characterization of a series of 46 meningiomas. Tumor samples were obtained from 46 patients with meningioma (36 benign and 12 atypical) from the Clinic Hospital of Valencia. Cytogenetic analyses were performed by short-te…
Describing the gingival involvement in a sample of 182 Italian predominantly oral mucous membrane pemphigoid patients: A retrospective series
2016
Background The oral cavity has been frequently described as the only site of involvement or as the first manifestation of mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), being the gingival tissues often involved, but usually this has been effusively detailed in limited case series. This is a retrospective evaluation of the gingival involvement in 182 Italian patients with oral MMP. Material and Methods The diagnosis of MMP was established by both clinical morphology and direct immunofluorescence finding. Patient information (age, gender, risk factors and medical status) and parameters of manifestation (lesions’ distribution, site and type) were detailed. Results The mean age was 62 years for women (n=137…
Desmoplastic melanoma may mimic a cutaneous peripheral nerve sheath tumor: Report of 3 challenging cases
2017
Desmoplastic melanoma (DM) and cutaneous malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) reveal histological and immunohistochemical similarities, including S100 positivity and negative staining for conventional melanocytic markers. We present 3 cases of cutaneous S100-positive spindle cell tumors in elderly patients, in which first findings led to initial misdiagnoses as cutaneous MPNST and benign peripheral sheath nerve tumor (neurofibroma). The identification of adjacent atypical melanocytic hyperplasia in the overlying skin along with tumor cell proliferation, also in the superficial dermis, the neurotropic component and the absence of any relationship between the tumor and a major ner…
