AbstractThis article is about navigating asylum, employment and language policy in a new country as an asylum seeker. Through the story of one individual, we show that profound inequalities are exacerbated when forced migrants are limited in their choice of language they might study or use. The individual is Tailor F, an Iraqi man seeking asylum, and the country is Finland, officially bilingual, with a majority language (Finnish) and a minority language (Swedish). The language policy of the European Union has the goal that every citizen will be bilingual and everybody will be able to communicate in two diQ erent languages besides one’s mother tongue. The aim of this article is to investigate the conditions for reaching these goals among people with immigrant backgrounds. The article provides an overview of bilingualism among one group of adults with Hungarian background in Finland. The focus is on language repertoire (e.g. the self-assessed language pro+ ciency), language choice between Finnish and Hungarian, the role of the minority language in their everyday lives and the future prospect for maintenance of Hungarian. L2-L1 Translation Priming Effects in a Lexical Decision Task: Evidence From Low Proficient Korean-English Bilinguals

One of the key issues in bilingual lexical representation is whether L1 processing is facilitated by L2 words. In this study, we conducted two experiments using the masked priming paradigm to examine how L2-L1 translation priming effects emerge when unbalanced, low proficiency, Korean-English bilinguals performed a lexical decision task. In Experiment 1, we used a 150 ms SOA (50 ms prime duration followed by a blank interval of 100 ms) and found a significant L2-L1 translation priming effect. In contrast, in Experiment 2, we used a 60 ms SOA (50 ms prime duration followed by a blank interval of 10 ms) and found a null effect of L2-L1 translation priming. In Catalonia, in a short period of time, statistics have raised from the 1% recorded ten years ago to the current 13% of students of foreign’s origin. This change has increased linguistic diversity regarding student’s background. However, more than a 50% are from Hispanic origin and the majority have Spanish as their mother tongue. In this case, and strictly from a linguistic point of view, the linguistic immersion programs used in Catalonia to teach Catalan to Spanish students maintain their validity.
