Cooperatively Enhanced Ion Pair Binding with a Hybrid Receptor

A simple 18-crown-6-based bis-urea receptor R(1) was synthesized in three steps from a commercial starting material. The receptor's behavior toward anions, cations, and ion pairs was studied in solution with (1)H NMR, in solid state with single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and in gas phase with mass spectrometry. In 4:1 CDCl3/dimethyl sulfoxide solution the receptor's binding preference of halide anions is I(-) < Br(-) < Cl(-) following the trend of the hydrogen-bonding acceptor ability of the anions. Electrochemical chiral recognition by microparticle coatings of Pd complexes with bridging cyclometalated phosphines

Abstract The palladium(II) dinuclear complex with bridging cyclometalated phosphines, {Pd2[μ-(C6H4)PPh2]2(μ-O2CCH3)2} (Pd2L2), having a paddlewheel structure, is reversibly oxidized in CH2Cl2 to a dinuclear palladium(III) analogue via two successive one-electron steps. Solid state voltammetry of Pd2L2 in contact with aqueous electrolytes produce as one-electron oxidation with two competing mechanisms involving anion intercalation/anion binding between/to metal centres, chloride ions acting as inhibitors for the first pathway. R- and S-Pd2L2 produces a significant stereoselective electrocatalytic activity with respect to the oxidation of l - and d -glutamic acid in alkaline media.

Abstract Microparticulate deposits of scorpiand-like azamacrocyclic receptors (L1–L4) attached to graphite electrodes provide distinctive voltammetric features in contact with aqueous DNA solutions at biological pH, denoting the formation of DNA surface complexes. A formally solvent-independent redox system can be theoretically defined using the Lovric and Scholz modeling of the voltammetry of microparticles for ion-insertion solids. The proposed theory is based on the extra-thermodynamic assumptions that no net charge accumulates at the solid|electrolyte interface and the assumption that the structure of the solid and the ion binding remain unaffected by the solvent. rhoB encoding a Ras-related GTPase is immediate-early inducible by genotoxic treatments, indicating that it is part of the cellular stress response. Here, we investigated the influence of RhoB on signal pathways that are rapidly evoked by genotoxic compounds. The data obtained show that wild-type RhoB neither affects activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases nor AP-1-dependent gene expression. However, RhoB inhibited both basal and genotoxic agent-stimulated activity of the transcription factor nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB). Most syntheses of thiolate-protected metal nanoparticles (NPs) include a thermochemical step in which the as-prepared, polydisperse NPs are transformed to a narrower size distribution in a poorly understood process known as digestive ripening (DR). Previous theoretical approaches considered either surface and electrostatic contributions or surface and ligand-binding contributions. We show that the three contributions are needed to obtain theoretical predictions in agreement with experimental observations. Modifying the affinity of odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) to small ligands by replacement of specific residues in the binding pocket may lead to several technological applications. Thanks to their compact and stable structures, OBPs are currently regarded as the best candidates to be used in biosensing elements for odorants and volatiles detection. The wide and rich information on the structure of these proteins both in their apo-forms and in complexes with specific ligands provides guidelines to design reliable mutants to monitor specific targets. Abstract By means of simple polarimetry, we studied the binding abilities of native α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins toward a group of suitably chosen model guests. We were able to get reliable estimations of the binding constants K, spread over a wide range (from 3.7 to 12,300 M−1), allowing us to carry on interesting comparisons. A comprehensive discussion of polarimetric data, and in particular a detailed analysis of the variations ΔΘ of molar optical activities consequent to inclusion, offered us the opportunity to get useful insights into the structure and dynamic behavior of host–guest complexes.
