Use of a new cross-linked collagen membrane for the treatment of dehiscence-type defects at titanium implants: a prospective, randomized-controlled d…

2009

OBJECTIVES The aim of the present randomized-controlled double-blinded clinical multicenter study was to assess the use of either a new cross-linked (VN) or a native collagen membrane (BG) for the treatment of dehiscence-type defects at titanium implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of n=54 patients were recruited in four German university clinics. According to a parallel-groups design, dehiscence-type defects at titanium implants were filled with a natural bone mineral and randomly assigned to either VN or BG. Submerged sites were allowed to heal for 4 months. Primary (e.g., changes in defect length - DeltaDL, quality of newly formed tissue [0-4] - TQ) and secondary parameters (e.g., memb…

A two-cohort feasibility study on polyglycolic acid yarn implantation for abolition of saphenous vein reflux

2017

The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a polyglycolic acid (PGA) yarn implant for nonthermal ablation of saphenous vein reflux. In two consecutive cohort studies (TAHOE I and TAHOE II), the feasibility of abolition of great saphenous vein (GSV) reflux by implantation of a PGA yarn was tested under ultrasound guidance in 51 and 30 patients, respectively. The use of tumescent local anesthesia was not required. Graduated compression stockings and thrombosis prophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin were used for 2 weeks after intervention in the first study only.Of 81 enrolled patients, 77 (95%) were available at 6-month follow-up. Complete occlusion of th…

Alveolar bone preservation in extraction sockets using non-resorbable dPTFE membranes: a retrospective non-randomized study.

2008

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical regeneration of extraction sockets using high-density polytetrafluoroethylene (dPTFE) membranes without the use of a graft material. Methods: A total of 276 extraction sockets were evaluated in 276 subjects (151 males and 125 females; mean age, 50.2 years; age range: 24 to 73 years). After extraction, flaps were elevated and a dPTFE membrane was placed over the extraction site. The flaps were repositioned and sutured into place. Primary closure was not obtained over the membranes. The cemento-enamel junctions of the adjacent teeth were used as reference points. Measurements were taken postextraction and 12 months after surger…

Efficacy of a bioactive alloplast, in the treatment of human periodontal osseous defects-a clinical study.

2010

Presently, bone replacement grafts are one of the modalities of therapy for which there is histologic evidence of regeneration coronal to the base of the previous osseous defect. Bioactive glasses are used extensively in medicine and dentistry. This study evaluated the additional efficacy of a bioactive alloplast, PerioGlas, in comparison with open flap debridement only. 8 systemically healthy volunteers were chosen, each having 2 collateral sites with ?6 mm clinical probing depth and radiographic evidence of an intrabony defect. Randomly, one defect was treated with open flap debridement plus bioactive glass (test) and the other with open flap debridement alone (control). At baseline, 3, 6…

Collagen copolymer posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens for hyperopia correction: three-year follow-up.

2013

Purpose To assess the efficacy, predictability, safety, and stability of the Visian V3 Implantable Collamer Lens posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (PC pIOL) for moderate to high hyperopia. Setting Private clinic, Oviedo, Spain. Design Prospective nonrandomized clinical study. Methods The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, manifest refraction, endothelial cell density, intraocular pressure (IOP), central vault, and adverse events were evaluated for 3 years postoperatively. Results The study comprised 73 eyes of 44 patients. The mean spherical equivalent decreased from +4.84 diopters (D) ± 1.6 (SD) (range +1.00 to +7.75 D) preoperatively to −0.13 ± 0.39 …

Antimicrobial activity of biogenically produced spherical Se-nanomaterials embedded in organic material against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphyloco…

2017

In an effort to prevent the formation of pathogenic biofilms on hydroxyapatite (HA)-based clinical devices and surfaces, we present a study evaluating the antimicrobial efficacy of Spherical biogenic Se-Nanostructures Embedded in Organic material (Bio Se-NEMO-S) produced by Bacillus mycoides SelTE01 in comparison with two different chemical selenium nanoparticle (SeNP) classes. These nanomaterials have been studied as potential antimicrobials for eradication of established HA-grown biofilms, for preventing biofilm formation on HA-coated surfaces and for inhibition of planktonic cell growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCTC 12934 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Bio Se-NEMO resulted more e…

Reduced protein adsorption on plastics via direct plasma deposition of triethylene glycol monoallyl ether

1997

The direct plasma-induced deposition of tri(ethylene glycol) monoallyl ether is reported. RF plasma polymerization of this monomer was carried out under both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed plasma operation. The major focus of this work was optimization of the degree of retention of the C-O-C bonds of the starting monomer during the deposition process. This successfully was accomplished using low RF power during the CW runs and low RF duty cycles during the pulsed plasma experiments. Spectroscopic analysis of the plasma films revealed a strong dependence of film composition on the RF power and duty cycles employed. In particular, an unusually high level of film chemistry compositional contr…

Folate-targeted supramolecular vesicular aggregates based on polyaspartyl-hydrazide copolymers for the selective delivery of antitumoral drugs.

2010

Supramolecular vesicular aggregates (SVAs) have the advantage of combining the safe and biocompatible properties of colloidal vesicular carriers based on phospholipids with those of polymeric materials, i.e. polyaspartyl-hydrazide (PAHy) copolymers. To provide SVAs with a certain tumour selectivity, folate moieties were chemically conjugated to PAHy copolymers. Physicochemical properties (mean sizes, polydispersity index and zeta potential) of folate-targeted SVAs (FT-SVAs) loaded with gemcitabine were evaluated. The antiproliferative and anticancer activity of gemcitabine-loaded FT-SVAs was evaluated against two cancer cell lines, i.e. MCF-7 cells which over-express the folate receptor and…

The excellent biocompatibility and negligible immune response of the titanium heterometallic MOF MUV-10

2021

The Ti-Ca heterometallic MOF MUV-10 exhibits good dispersibility in phosphate buffer and low phosphate-induced degradation in comparison to other MOF systems. It induces no cytotoxicity towards cells of the immune system and no inmune response, making it an attractive candidate for biomedical applications and demonstrating its safe use for other applications.
