Identification of Synaptic Integration Mode in CA3 Pyramidal Neuron Model

2019

International audience; A morphologically realistic and anisotropic model of CA3 pyramidal neuron was developed to determine the synaptic integration modes the neuron is able to perform. Linearity and nonlinearity were identified in different synaptic locations with varying active mechanisms such as the presence of ionic channels in the dendritic arbor and the types of receptors in the synapse. Quantification of synaptic integration was performed using paired-pulse stimulation protocol and subthreshold input/output (sI/O) transformation. Results show that the mode of synaptic integration is location-dependent while the linearity or nonlinearity in the integration is mainly influenced by the…

Revealing the unique features of each individual's muscle activation signatures

2021

International audience; There is growing evidence that each individual has unique movement patterns, or signatures. The exact origin of these movement signatures, however, remains unknown. We developed an approach that can identify individual muscle activation signatures during two locomotor tasks (walking and pedalling). A linear support vector machine was used to classify 78 participants based on their electromyographic (EMG) patterns measured on eight lower limb muscles. To provide insight into decision-making by the machine learning classification model, a layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) approach was implemented. This enabled the model predictions to be decomposed into relevance …

Effect of C/N shock variation on the performances of a moving bed membrane bioreactor.

2015

Abstract The effect of a sharp variation of C/N ratio in a moving bed membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR) pilot plant treating high strength wastewater has been investigated. The experimental campaign was divided into two periods, each characterized by a different C/N ratio (namely, 2.5 and 15, Period 1 and Period 2, respectively). The MB-MBR system was analyzed in terms of organic carbon removal, nitrification efficiency, biokinetic activity and fouling behavior. The results showed that the nitrification process was severely affected by lower C/N value and by high concentration of ammonia. It was noticed an extensive stress effect on the autotrophic bacteria. Furthermore, it was observed an incre…

Predictability and prediction of lowest observed adverse effect levels in a structurally heterogeneous set of chemicals

2005

A database of chronic lowest observed adverse effect levels (LOAELs) for 234 compounds, previously compiled from different sources (Toxicology Letters79, 131-143 (1995)), was modelled using graph theoretical descriptors. This study reveals that data are not homogeneous. Only those data originating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports could be well modelled by multilinear regression (MLR) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). In contrast, data available from the specific procedures of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) database introduced noise and did not render good models either alone, or in combination with the EPA data.

Biogas yield from Sicilian kitchen waste and cheese whey

2013

The aim of this study is to determine the chemical composition of kitchen waste and cheese whey, as well as the biogas yield obtained from the Anaerobic Digestion (AD) tests of these two raw materials. Since the separated waste collection is performed in the town of Marineo (Palermo), a sample of kitchen waste, different from food industry one and included in the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW), was collected from the mass stored at the households of this town. Moreover, a sample of cheese whey was collected in a Sicilian mini dairy plant, where sheep milk is processed. This investigation was carried out inside laboratory digesters of Aleksandras Stulginskis University (Li…

Biogeneration of 1-octen-3-ol by lipoxygenase and hydroperoxide lyase activities of Agaricus bisporus

2001

Abstract The biogeneration of 1-octen-3-ol by lipoxygenase and associated hydroperoxide lyase activities of a homogenate of the cultivated mushroom Agaricus bisporus was investigated using linoleic acid as a substrate. The optimal substrate and protein concentrations were 1.5 mM and 1.5 mg ml −1 , respectively. The V max value for the enzymic coupled reaction lipoxygenase–hydroperoxide lyase was 6 μg of 1-octen-3-ol ml −1 min −1 , with a K m value of 0.3×10 −3 M. The highest enzymic activity was observed in the presence of pure oxygen (22.9 μg of 1-octen-3-ol ml −1 ), with a bioconversion yield of 36%. The production of 380 μg 1-octen-3-ol per g of mushroom homogenate was demonstrated using…

Molecular cloning and characterization of theCandida albicansUBI3 gene coding for a ubiquitin-hybrid protein

2000

Using a polyubiquitin cDNA as a probe, we have isolated a clone (pPR3, a pEMBLYe23 derivative plasmid) containing the Candida albicans UBI3 gene coding for a fusion protein. This protein is formed by one ubiquitin subunit fused, at its C-terminus, to an unrelated peptide which is similar to the ribosomal protein encoded by the 3' tail of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae UBI3 gene. Southern blot analysis of chromosomal DNA probed with the 3' non-ubiquitin tail of UBI3 indicated that only one homologous gene is present in the C. albicans genome. Heterelogous expression of pPR3 in a S. cerevisiae ubi3 mutant strain complements the mutant phenotype (slow growth) conferred by the ubi3 defect; this p…

A Two-Year Bio-Agronomic and Chemotaxonomic Evaluation of Wild Sicilian Myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) Berries and Leaves.

2019

A collection of nine Myrtus communis samples from different localities of Sicily was evaluated. Morphological traits and production characteristics have been chosen as parameters to arrange the samples into homogeneous groups and to identify the best biotypes for possible future agro-industrial exploitation. The plant material has been subjected to taxonomic characterization from biometric and phytochemical perspectives. Myrtle berries and leaves have been analyzed for their content in metabolites, applying a cascade extraction protocol for M. communis leaves and a single hydroalcoholic extraction for berries, whereas hydrodistillation procedures have been applied to obtain the essential oi…

Self-healing silk from the sea: role of helical hierarchical structure inPinna nobilisbyssus mechanics

2019

11 pages; International audience; The byssus fibers of Mytilus mussel species have become an important role model in bioinspired materials research due to their impressive properties (e.g. high toughness, self-healing); however, Mytilids represent only a small subset of all byssus-producing bivalves. Recent studies have revealed that byssus from other species possess completely different protein composition and hierarchical structure. In this regard, Pinna nobilis byssus is especially interesting due to its very different morphology, function and its historical use for weaving lightweight golden fabrics, known as sea silk. P. nobilis byssus was recently discovered to be comprised of globula…
