Competing species system as a qualitative model of radiation therapy

To examine complex features of tumor dynamics we analyze a competing-species lattice model that takes into account the competition for nutrients or space as well as interaction with therapeutic factors such as drugs or radiation. Our model might be interpreted as a certain prey–predator system having three trophic layers: (i) the basal species that might be interpreted as nutrients; (ii) normal and tumor cells that consume nutrients, and (iii) therapeutic factors that might kill either nutrient, normal or tumor cells. DNA structure-specific sensitization of a metalloporphyrin leads to an efficient in vitro quadruplex detection molecular tool

International audience; The search for convenient molecular probes for detecting DNA and RNA quadruplexes in vitro is marked by a rapid pace of progress, spurred on by the multiple roles these higher-order nucleic acid structures play in many genetic dysregulations. Here, we contribute to this search, reporting on a palladated porphyrin named Pd.TEGPy: its efficiency as quadruplex-selective fluorescent dye relies on a structural design that endows it with attractive supramolecular and electronic properties and makes it an efficient turn-on, quadruplex-selective fluorescent stain thanks to a DNA-mediated sensitization mechanism that ensures a high level of specificity.

Histones and their post-translational modifications contribute to regulating fundamental biological processes in all eukaryotic cells. We have applied a conventional tandem affinity purification strategy to histones H3 and H4 of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Mass spectrometry analysis of the co-purified proteins revealed multiple associated proteins, including core histones, which indicates that tagged histones may be incorporated to the nucleosome particle. A simple method to estimate the isoelectric point of modified Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) particles

We present a simple method to estimate the isoelectric point (pI) of Tomato Bushy Stunt particles. We demonstrate that the combination of agarose gels with different pH buffers can be used to electrophorese the virus particles and their migration patterns can be compared. This method allows us to estimate the pI of the virus particles (wild type, wt, and genetically modified particles) and to monitor the effect of the pI of modified peptide side chains of the viral capsid subunit on the pI of the whole virus particle.
