Measuring, monitoring, and managing for productive learning? Australian insights into the enumeration of education
2017
This article reflects upon how teacher learning is currently construed under conditions of increased measurement of student learning outcomes, and the effects of advocacy for such enumeration processes. It draws upon a broad range of literature on the practice of education, measuring learning, and its effects on teachers? learning. To help ground the analysis, the paper analyses the meeting transcripts of an ongoing, long-term teacher learning initiative in a school in northern Queensland, Australia, and how processes of measurement influenced such learning. These reflections reveal teachers? practices as deeply influenced by the ways in which schooling is construed under conditions of inc…
Flipping and Blending : An Action Research Project on Improving a Functional Programming Course
2016
This article reports on an action research project on improving a functional programming course by moving toward a practical and flexible study environment—flipped and blended classroom. Teaching the topic of functional programming was found to be troublesome using a traditional lectured course format. The need to increase students’ amount of practice emerged while subsequent challenges relating to students’ independent practical coursework were observed. Particular concerns relating to group work, learning materials, and the attribute of flexibility were investigated during the third action research cycle. The research cycle was analyzed using a qualitative survey on students’ views, teach…
Learning Groups in MOOCs : Lessons for Online Learning in Higher Education
2017
when there is interaction within online learning groups, meaningful learning is achieved. Motivating and sustaining effective student interactions requires planning, coordination and implementation of curriculum, pedagogy and technology. For our aim to understand online learning group processes to identify effective online learning group mechanisms, comparative analysis was used on a massive open online course (MOOC) run in 2015 and 2016. Qualitative (interaction on the platform) and quantitative (survey) methods were used. The findings revealed several possible ways to improve online learning group processes. This paper concludes that course organization helped in increasing individual par…
Blending pieces of Dupin cyclides for 3D modeling and reconstruction : study in the space of spheres
2013
The thesis deals with the blending of canal surfaces in geometric modeling using pieces of Dupin Cyclides. We try to solve a problem of reconstructing real parts manufactured and controlled by the CEA of Valduc. Using the space of spheres in which we can manipulate both points, spheres and canal surfaces, we simplify some problems. This space is represented by a 4-dimensional quadric in a 5-dimensional space, equipped with the Lorentz form, it is the Lorentz space. In the space of spheres, problems of blending canal surfaces by pieces of Dupin cyclides are simplified in linear problems. We give algorithms to make such blends using the space of spheres and after we come back to 3 dimensions …
Role of photoactive layer morphology in high fill factor all-polymer bulk heterojunction solar cells
2011
We report on the realization of all-polymer solar cells based on blends of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) as a donor and poly{[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)} (P(NDI2OD-T2)) as an acceptor. High fill factors are demonstrated for the first time in this class of devices suggesting high dissociation efficiency for the bounded electron-hole pairs and balanced electron and hole mobility along the thin films. The use of the high-mobility n-type P(NDI2OD-T2) polymer enables us to overcome one of the problems limiting the efficiency of all-polymer solar cells, resulting in fill factors comparable with those reported for …
Design considerations of high RAP-content asphalt produced at reduced temperatures
2018
In many countries recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for road surface layers is limited to a maximum of 10–30%. This is due to technical limitation of common asphalt plant but also to specifications that are still restrictive when it comes to increasing RAP in surface courses. The mistrust in this practice is mainly related to uncertainty in performance of these mixes as well as to existing fundamental issues with the mix design, especially when production temperatures are lowered. This paper analyses some of the factors affecting the design of warm asphalt mixtures for surface course layers containing 50% RAP, and suggests a framework to justify the common assumption of full ble…
Analysis of the crystallization behaviour of PBT-rich PBT/PET blends under processing conditions
2007
Among the high‐performance polyesters blends PBT/PET blends are expected to exhibit remarkable properties as far as the crystallization behaviour is concerned. The solidification behaviour of a 60/40 w/w PBT/PET blend was studied in a wide range of cooling conditions, according to a Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) procedure developed by the authors, aiming to emulate the typical conditions encountered in polymer processing. A set of several samples characterized by an homogeneous structure was prepared by solidification from the melt through spray cooling, and the resulting structure and properties were evaluated by density, Micro Hardness (MH), Wide Angle X‐ray Diffraction (WAXD) m…
