RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN FRAIL AND PRE-FRAIL OLDER ADULTS:RESULTS FROM A META-ANALYSIS AND EXPLORATORY META-REGRESSI…

2017

Frailty is common and associated with poorer outcomes in the elderly, but its role as potential cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor requires clarification. We thus aimed to meta-analytically evaluate the evidence of frailty and pre-frailty as risk factors for CVD. Two reviewers selected all studies comparing data about CVD prevalence or incidence rates between frail/pre-frail vs. robust. The association between frailty status and CVD in cross-sectional studies was explored by calculating and pooling crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs)+/- 95% confidence intervals (CIs); the data from longitudinal studies were pooled using the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs). Eighteen cohorts with a total …

The metabolic versatility of PAOs as an opportunity to obtain a highly P-enriched stream for further P-recovery

2015

The effects of two sequencing batch reactor operation strategies for phosphorus stream enrichment over the biological phosphorus removal performance have been studied. The objective of both strategies is of performing an extraction cycle in order to obtain a new stream highly enriched with phosphorus. In the 1st strategy the amount of influent volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is the same in each cycle; while in the 2nd strategy the influent VFAs concentration is increased during phosphorus extraction experiments. Despite the strong decrease of the stored poly-P inside the cells in both strategies after the recovery cycles, the ability of the systems to remove phosphorus was not affected. The P-r…

Identification of nuclear proteins which interact with H1° mRNA.

2012

In developing rat brain the synthesis of H1° histone is mainly regulated at posttranscriptional level and probably depends on RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) (1). We previously identified RBPs apparently specific for this messenger (2) and cloned two novel proteins by screening an expression cDNA library by binding to radiolabeled RNA (3-10). Here we report the use of biotinylated H1° RNA as bait to isolate by chromatography nuclear proteins which interact with H1° mRNA. We identified by mass spectrometry abundant RBPs and molecular chaperones. By western blot we also evidenced, among the RNA-bound proteins, the cold shock domain-containing protein 2 (CSD-C2, also know as PIPPin), a brain-enric…

A method based on texture feature and edge detection for people counting in a crowded area

2019

We propose a population counting method for feature fusion and edge detection. The image is extracted from multiple information sources to estimate the count by image feature extraction and texture feature analysis, as well as for crowd head edge detection. We count people in high-density still images. For example, in the city bus station, subway. Our method uses a still image taken by the camera to estimate the count in the crowd density image, using multiple sources of information, namely: HOG, LBP, CANNY, these sources provides separate estimates of the number of counts and other statistical measures, through the support vector Machine SVM, classification, and regression analysis to obtain…

Consensus guidelines for the detection of immunogenic cell death

2014

Apoptotic cells have long been considered as intrinsically tolerogenic or unable to elicit immune responses specific for dead cell-associated antigens. However, multiple stimuli can trigger a functionally peculiar type of apoptotic demise that does not go unnoticed by the adaptive arm of the immune system, which we named "immunogenic cell death" (ICD). ICD is preceded or accompanied by the emission of a series of immunostimulatory damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) in a precise spatiotemporal configuration. Several anticancer agents that have been successfully employed in the clinic for decades, including various chemotherapeutics and radiotherapy, can elicit ICD. Moreover, defect…
