Isolation, identification and characterisation of three novel probiotic strains (Lactobacillus paracaseiCNCM I-4034,Bifidobacterium breveCNCM I-4035 …
2013
The aim of the present study was to isolate, identify and characterise novel strains of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria with probiotic properties from the faeces of exclusively breast-fed infants. Of the 4680 isolated colonies, 758 exhibited resistance to low pH and tolerance to high concentrations of bile salts; of these, only forty-two exhibited a strong ability to adhere to enterocytesin vitro. The identities of the isolates were confirmed by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequencing, which permitted the grouping of the forty-two bacteria into three different strains that showed more than 99 % sequence identity withLactobacillus paracasei,Lactobacillus rhamnosusandBifidobacterium breve,…
Role of calcineurin in Ca2+-induced release of catecholamines and neuropeptides
1998
Neurotransmission requires rapid docking, fusion, and recycling of neurotransmitter vesicles. Several of the proteins involved in this complex Ca2+-regulated mechanism have been identified as substrates for protein kinases and phosphatases, e.g., the synapsins, synaptotagmin, rabphilin3A, synaptobrevin, munc18, MARCKS, dynamin I, and B-50/GAP-43. So far most attention has focused on the role of kinases in the release processes, but recent evidence indicates that phosphatases may be as important. Therefore, we investigated the role of the Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase calcineurin in exocytosis and subsequent vesicle recycling. Calcineurin-neutralizing antibodies, which blocke…
Lo sfogo dell'amante e la 'retorica' del prologo (Plauto Merc. 1-39)
2014
In the Mercator’s prologue the necessity to tell the background overlaps the ethos of the lover, who, through his unruly language, fluctuates between the ‘talking too much’ and the ‘talking too little’. These categories bring to a metapoetic and ‘rhetoric’ reflection on the composition and modality of the prologue itself. If the invitation to the brevity is a constant scenic standard in all the Plautus comedies, the opportunity to ‘speak little’ is necessary especially in the prologues, in order to receive the public’s benignitas (in other words, the willingness to listen). The Mercator’s long exposition therefore represents a playful infraction, which subverts this obligatory rule in the p…
Aerobic and facultatively anaerobic cellulolytic bacteria from the gut of the termite Zootermopsis angusticollis.
2002
Aims: To demonstrate the occurrence of cellulolytic bacteria in the termite Zootermopsis angusticollis. Methods and Results: Applying aerobic cultivation conditions we isolated 119 cellulolytic strains from the gut of Z. angusticollis, which were assigned to 23 groups of aerobic, facultatively anaerobic or microaerophilic cellulolytic bacteria. 16S rDNA restriction fragment pattern and partial 16S rDNA sequence analysis, as well as numerical taxonomy, were used for the assignment of the isolates. The Gram-positive bacteria of the actinomycetes branch could be assigned to the order Actinomycetales including the genera Cellulomonas/Oerskovia, Microbacterium and Kocuria. The Gram-positive bact…
Rapid isolation of single microbial cells from mixed natural and laboratory populations with the aid of a micromanipulator.
1999
In order to facilitate the isolation of pure cultures from natural habitats we have developed a method for the isolation of single microbial cell clones from a mixed population, e.g. the flora of the termite gut, with the aid of a modern micromanipulator. The separated single prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells were grown after transfer in culture media or they were used for single cell PCR. The micromanipulator was also applied for the removal of nuclei from protozoa, of which the SSU rDNA was directly amplified.
Tyrosine-containing peptides are precursors of tyramine produced by Lactobacillus plantarum strain IR BL0076 isolated from wine
2012
Abstract Background Biogenic amines are molecules with allergenic properties. They are found in fermented products and are synthesized by lactic acid bacteria through the decarboxylation of amino acids present in the food matrix. The concentration of biogenic amines in fermented foodstuffs is influenced by many environmental factors, and in particular, biogenic amine accumulation depends on the quantity of available precursors. Enological practices which lead to an enrichment in nitrogen compounds therefore favor biogenic amine production in wine. Free amino acids are the only known precursors for the synthesis of biogenic amines, and no direct link has previously been demonstrated between …
Bioaccumulation of selenium-by fruit origin lactic acid bacteria in tropical fermented fruit juices
2021
Abstract Adequate fruit consumption helps to prevent several chronic age-related diseases. Selenium (Se) is an elemental micronutrient with antioxidant capacity. In general, fruits and Se ingest by humans are below the recommended daily intake value. Fresh fruits are highly susceptible to deterioration during storage. Fermentation can improve the storage period, sensory profile, and bioactive compound content of foods; moreover, some lactic acid bacteria can accumulate organic Se intracellularly. In this work, microbial growth and Se accumulation by Levilactobacillus brevis CRL2051 and Fructobacillus tropaeoli CRL2034 in tropical fruit juices were evaluated. The strains could grow 1–2 log c…
On Angels and Demons. Analysis of a sequence in the iconographic programme of the encyclopedic moralization of fin´amors in Matfré Ermengaud´s Brevia…
2017
This paper analyzes three illuminations of Matfré Ermengaud´s Breviari d´Amor which represent the aut…
