Actinides and the sources of cosmic rays

Abstract The abundances of the actinide elements in the cosmic rays can provide critical constraints on the major sites of their acceleration. Using recent calculations of the r-process yields in core-collapse supernovae (SNe), we have determined the actinide abundances averaged over various assumed time intervals for their supernovae generation and their cosmic-ray acceleration. Using standard Galactic chemical evolution models, we have also determined the expected actinide abundances in the present interstellar medium. Abstract Dynamics of the bubble rising in the vertical Hele–Shaw cell with magnetic liquid in the normal magnetic field is studied. Linear stability analysis of the circular shape is carried out. Development of the instability with respect to the lowest symmetric mode is simulated by the boundary integral equation technique.
Diffusion between evolving interfaces

Diffusion in an evolving environment is studied by continuos-time Monte Carlo simulations. Diffusion is modelled by continuos-time random walkers on a lattice, in a dynamic environment provided by bubbles between two one-dimensional interfaces driven symmetrically towards each other. For one-dimensional random walkers constrained by the interfaces, the bubble size distribution domi- nates diffusion. For two-dimensional random walkers, it is also controlled by the topography and dynamics of the interfaces. The results of the one-dimensional case are recovered in the limit where the interfaces are strongly driven. Even with simple hard-core repulsion between the interfaces and the particles, …
Helium bubbles in metals: Molecular-dynamics simulations and positron states.

By combining molecular-dynamics results for the aluminum-helium interface with positron-state calculations it is demonstrated that a positron is trapped at the surface of a He bubble in Al. The annihilation rate with Al electrons is similar to that at a clean surface, while simultaneously there is a significant annihilation rate with He electrons. This enables one to obtain a useful relation between the positron lifetime and helium densities in bubbles.
Measurement of the polarization in νμ charged current interactions in the NOMAD experiment

The Λ polarization in νμ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed Λ 's) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the W -boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: Px(xF 0)=−0.09±0.06(stat)±0.03(sys) . These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. Kaonic production of $ \Lambda$ (1405) off deuteron target in chiral dynamics

The K^- induced production of Lambda(1405) is investigated in K^- d to pi Sigma n reactions based on coupled-channels chiral dynamics, in order to discuss the resonance position of the Lambda(1405) in the KbarN channel. We find that the K^-d to Lambda(1405)n process favors the production of Lambda(1405) initiated by the KbarN channel. The present approach indicates that the Lambda(1405) resonance position is 1420 MeV rather than 1405 MeV in the pi Sigma invariant mass spectra of K- d to pi Sigma n reactions. This is consistent with an observed spectrum of the K^- d to pi^+ Sigma^- n with 686-844 MeV/c incident K^- by bubble chamber experiments done in the 70's. Our model also reproduces the…
An experimental study of the antineutron-light nucleus annihilation at 1.4 GeV/c

The heavy liquid bubble chamber, Gargamelle, has been used to investigate the gross features of the annihilation of antineutrons in light nuclei (mainly Carbon). Results are presented on the distributions of multiplicity, momentum and emission angle for charged pions and protons together with a simple model to describe them.
The r-process in the high entropy bubble

We examined the r-process in the high entropy bubble within a detailed parameter study. Previous investigations ([1,2]) based on realistic supernovae models showed already that this model yields a very good fit to the solar system r-process abundance curve for masses above A = 120. For A < 120 their fit was relatively poor. We are concerned mainly with the question whether it is possible to obtain a good fit in the range below A = 120. Within a simple approach of an adiabatically expanding sphere we analyzed a broad parameter range, independent of specific explosion simulations. We re-evaluate our model predictions in Phys. Rev. D 79, 013002 (2009) for different observables in neutrino induced coherent pion production. This comes as a result of the new improved fit to old bubble chamber data of the dominant axial C_5^A nucleon-to-Delta form factor. We find an increase of 20%-30% in the values for the total cross sections. Uncertainties induced by the errors in the determination of C_5^A are computed. Our new results turn out to be compatible within about $1\sigma$ with the former ones. We also stress the existing tension between the recent experimental determination of the \sigma(CC coh \pi^+)}/\sigma(NC coh \pi^0)} $ ratio by the SciBooNE Collaboration and the the…
Electroweak baryogenesis at high bubble wall velocities

It is widely believed that electroweak baryogenesis should be suppressed in strong phase transitions with fast-moving bubble walls, but this effect has never been quantitatively studied. We rederive fluid equations describing transport of particle asymmetries near the bubble wall without making the small-wall-velocity approximation. We show that the suppression of the baryon asymmetry is a smooth function of the wall speed and that there is no special behavior when crossing the sound speed barrier. Electroweak baryogenesis can thus be efficient also with strong detonations, generically associated with models with observably large gravitational waves. We also make a systematic and critical c…
