Evidence concerning the role of alcohol-induced neuroinflammation in alcohol intake and relapse has increased in the last few years. It is also proven that mu-opioid receptors (MORs) mediate the reinforcing properties of alcohol and, interestingly, previous research suggests that neuroinflammation and MORs could be related. Expression analysis of jagged genes in zebrafish embryos

The interaction of transmembrane Delta and Jagged/Serrate ligands with Notch receptors on neighboring cells is critically involved in cell specification during development. In zebrafish, the early expression of delta but not of jagged genes has been investigated in some detail. We have analyzed the sequence and embryonic expression pattern of the three zebrafish genes jagged1a, jagged1b, and jagged2. These genes, whose transcripts are detectable by in situ hybridization from early somitogenesis, are widely and dynamically expressed in embryos. Coexpression of neurocalcin with other calcium-binding proteins in the rat main olfactory bulb

The distribution patterns of four calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs)-calbindin D-28k (CB), calretinin (CR), neurocalcin (NC), and parvalbumin (PV)-in the rat main olfactory bulb were compared, and the degrees ofcolocalization of NC with the other CaBPs were determined by using double immunocytochemical techniques. All investigated CaBPs were detected in groups of periglomerular cells and Van Gehuchten cells, whereas other cell types expressed some of the investigated proteins but not all four. Abstract The connecting cilium of photoreceptor cells is the only intracellular link between the morphologically, functionally and biochemically different compartments of the inner and outer segments. Demonstration of an endocrine signaling circuit for insulin in the sponge Geodia cydonium.

Abstract The existence of an insulin-mediated cell-to-cell signaling in the sponge Geodia cydonium is demonstrated in this study by molecular biological and immunological techniques. The sequence of a sponge cDNA clone encoding preproinsulin was analyzed for the first time and determined to comprise a high homology to human preproinsulin (60-80% homology). The predicted polypeptide of preproinsulin from sponge contains two disulfide bridges which link the A- to the B-chain. The intra-A chain disulfide bridge is absent. Applying immunological and electron microscopical techniques it is shown that insulin is produced in specialized cells (spherulous cells). Experimental evidence is presented …

In plant cells, the calcium ion is a ubiquitous intracellular second messenger involved in numerous signalling pathways. Variations in the cytosolic concentration of Ca2+ ([Ca2+]cyt) couple a large array of signals and responses. Here we concentrate on calcium signalling in plant defence responses, particularly on the generation of the calcium signal and downstream calcium-dependent events participating in the establishment of defence responses with special reference to calcium-binding proteins.

AbstractCentrins are members of the family of Ca2+-binding EF-hand proteins. In photoreceptor cells, centrin isoform 1 is specifically localized in the non-motile cilium. This connecting cilium links the light-sensitive outer segment with the biosynthetic active inner segment of the photoreceptor cell. All intracellular exchanges between these compartments have to occur through this cilium. Alcadeins (Alcs) constitute a family of neuronal type I membrane proteins, designated Alc(alpha), Alc(beta), and Alc(gamma). The Alcs express in neurons dominantly and largely colocalize with the Alzheimer amyloid precursor protein (APP) in the brain. Alcs and APP show an identical function as a cargo receptor of kinesin-1. Moreover, proteolytic processing of Alc proteins appears highly similar to that of APP.
