Strangeness and charm in nuclear matter

The properties of strange (K, (K) over bar and (K) over bar*) and open-charm (D, (D) over bar and D*) mesons in dense matter are studied using a unitary approach in coupled channels for meson-baryon scattering. In the strangeness sector, the interaction with nucleons always comes through vector-meson exchange, which is evaluated by chiral and hidden gauge Lagrangians. For the interaction of charmed mesons with nucleons we extend the SU(3) Weinberg-Tomozawa Lagrangian to incorporate spin-flavor symmetry and implement a suitable flavor symmetry breaking. The in-medium solution for the scattering amplitude accounts for Pauli blocking effects and meson self-energies. On one hand, we obtain the …

Bleaching and thermal recovery of PL emissions in natural silica

Abstract We have investigated the bleaching of two photoluminescence (PL) emissions at 3.1 and 4.2 eV and the related growth of an electron spin resonance (ESR) signal, consisting in a hyperfine doublet split by 11.8 mT, in natural silica γ-irradiated by low doses, up to 1 Mrad. These observations definitely support the existence of a conversion mechanism, from optically active defects to paramagnetic ones. To further investigate this conversion process and the stability of the γ-induced paramagnetic centers, we performed PL and ESR measurements in samples that, after a γ exposure at 1 Mrad dose, were thermally treated at various temperatures ranging from 330 to 430 K. The exponent for superalgebras with superinvolution

Abstract Let A be a superalgebra with superinvolution over a field of characteristic zero and let c n ⁎ ( A ) , n = 1 , 2 , … , be its sequence of ⁎-codimensions. In [6] it was proved that such a sequence is exponentially bounded. In this paper we capture this exponential growth for finitely generated superalgebras with superinvolution A over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We shall prove that lim n → ∞ ⁡ c n ⁎ ( A ) n exists and it is an integer, denoted exp ⁎ ⁡ ( A ) and called ⁎-exponent of A. Moreover, we shall characterize finitely generated superalgebras with superinvolution according to their ⁎-exponent.

A β-1,3 Glucan Sulfate Induces Resistance in Grapevine against Plasmopara viticola Through Priming of Defense Responses, Including HR-like Cell Death

Sulfated laminarin (PS3) has been shown previously to be an elicitor of plant defense reactions in tobacco and Arabidopsis and to induce protection against tobacco mosaic virus. Here, we have demonstrated the efficiency of PS3 in protecting a susceptible grapevine cultivar (Vitis vinifera cv. Marselan) against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) under glasshouse conditions. This induced resistance was associated with potentiated H2O2 production at the infection sites, upregulation of defense-related genes, callose and phenol depositions, and hypersensitive response-like cell death. We introduce a memory model for robots that can account for many aspects of an inner world, ranging from object permanence, episodic memory, and planning to imagination and reveries. It is modeled after neurophysiological data and includes parts of the cerebral cortex together with models of arousal systems that are relevant for consciousness. Validation of short term recall of mobile phone use for the Interphone study

Aim: To validate short term recall of mobile phone use within Interphone, an international collaborative case control study of tumours of the brain, acoustic nerve, and salivary glands related to mobile telephone use. Methods: Mobile phone use of 672 volunteers in 11 countries was recorded by operators or through the use of software modified phones, and compared to use recalled six months later using the Interphone study questionnaire. The main projections of the olfactory bulb are directed to the olfactory cortex and olfactory amygdala (the anterior and posterolateral cortical amygdalae).
