Upgrade of ALICE forward detectors
2019
ALICE will upgrade its subsystems in 2019−2020 to fully benefit from the increased collision rate and luminosity of the LHC at CERN. Two new forward detectors will be installed at the core of ALICE: the Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) and the Muon Forward Tracker (MFT). Additionally, during the shutdown between Run 3 and Run 4, there will be an opportunity to install the Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). This paper describes these new forward detectors, their physics justification and goals, selected design features along with performance of detector prototypes and simulated performance figures. peerReviewed
Small Angle Neutron Scattering, X-ray Diffraction, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, and Thermogravimetry Studies to Characterize the Properties of …
2009
Nanocomposites based on laponite RD and (ethylene oxide)98(propylene oxide)67(ethylene oxide)98 (F127)triblock copolymer or poly(ethylene) glycol 2000 (PEG2000) were prepared by using the melting method. Small-angle neutron scattering and the X-ray diffraction experiments provided insights into the organization of the laponite RD dispersed in the macromolecular matrix over a wide length scale. SANS data analysis by means of a fractal law evidenced the formation of clusters of laponite RD at long correlation distance. The single laponite RD particles and the lamellar structure of F127 were described in the shorter length scale. Finally, the crystalline structure of the macromolecule was obse…
In a randomized trial in prostate cancer patients, dietary protein restriction modifies markers of leptin and insulin signaling in plasma extracellul…
2017
Obesity, metabolic syndrome, and hyperleptinemia are associated with aging and age-associated diseases including prostate cancer. One experimental approach to inhibit tumor growth is to reduce dietary protein intake and hence levels of circulating amino acids. Dietary protein restriction (PR) increases insulin sensitivity and suppresses prostate cancer cell tumor growth in animal models, providing a rationale for clinical trials. We sought to demonstrate that biomarkers derived from plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) reflect systemic leptin and insulin signaling and respond to dietary interventions. We studied plasma samples from men with prostate cancer awaiting prostatectomy who particip…
Hypothalamic CB1 cannabinoid receptors regulate energy balance in mice.
2012
Cannabinoid type 1 (CB(1)) receptor activation is generally considered a powerful orexigenic signal and inhibition of the endocannabinoid system is beneficial for the treatment of obesity and related metabolic diseases. The hypothalamus plays a critical role in regulating energy balance by modulating both food intake and energy expenditure. Although CB(1) receptor signaling has been implicated in the modulation of both these mechanisms, a complete understanding of its role in the hypothalamus is still lacking. Here we combined a genetic approach with the use of adeno-associated viral vectors to delete the CB(1) receptor gene in the adult mouse hypothalamus and assessed the impact of such ma…

Potential dopamine prodrug-loaded liposomes: preparation, characterization, andin vitrostability studies
2010
Dopamine delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) undergoes the permeability limitations of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Condensation of dopamine with neutral amino acids could afford potential pro- drugs able to interact with the BBB endogenous transporters and easily enter the brain. To improve the bio-availability of the dopamine prodrug, 2-amino-N-[2-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-ethyl]-3-phenyl-propionamide (DOPH), it was encapsulated in unilamellar liposomes of dimiristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC)and cholesterol. Vesicles were characterized by dynamic light scattering in order to evaluate their dimensions and vesicle stability, by zeta-potential measurements, by means of electronic mi…
Interactions of liposomes and hydrophobically-modified poly-(N-isopropylacrylamides): an attempt to model the cytoskeleton
1993
The interactions of small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) and water-soluble copolymers were studied by fluorescence spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS). The anchoring onto liposomal bilayer membranes of copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide, N-(2-(1-naphthyl)ethyl)-N-n-octadecylacrylamide and or N-[4-(1-pyrenyl)butyl]-N-n-octadecylacrylamide (0.5 mol% of the octadecylacrylamide comonomer) was monitored by non-radiative energy transfer between excited naphthalene and pyrene. The anchoring process occurred on zwitterionic lecithin liposomes and on negatively charged phosphatidic acid liposomes, whether the bilayer was in the crystalline or …
Effect of pH on the transfer kinetics of an anti-inflammatory drug from polyaspartamide hydrogels to a lipid model membrane
1997
Abstract The release of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), 4-biphenylacetic acid (BPAA), from α,β-poly( N -hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide (PHEA) hydrogels was tested at different pHs (4 and 7.4) by measuring the drug transfer from loaded hydrogel to dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) liposomes (multilamellar vesicles, MLV), chosen as a biomembrane model. This drug transfer was compared with the transfer from powdered drug and with drug classical. The perturbing effect of pure BPAA on the thermotropic behaviour of DMPC liposomes, in terms of transition temperature shift (Δ T m ) and enthalpy changes (Δ H ), was analysed at different pHs (4 and 7.4) by differential scanning cal…
INTERACTION OF MACROMOLECULAR PRO-DRUGS WITH LIPID MODEL MEMBRANE - CALORIMETRIC STUDY OF 4-BIPHENYLACETIC ACID LINKED TO ALPHA,BETA-POLY(N-HYDROXYET…
1990
The effect of 4-biphenylacetic acid (BPAA) covalently linked to α,β-poly(N-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) on the thermotropic properties of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposomes was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Addition of increasing amounts of PHEA-BPAA adduct to a suspension of phospholipid vesicles modified the thermotropic gel-to-liquid crystalline phase transition by decreasing the enthalpy changes ΔH with concomitant broadening of the peak without variations in the transition temperature (Tm). These effects are interpreted in terms of a deep interaction of BPAA bound to the polymer with the apolar moiety of the lipid bilayer. The amount of dr…
Infrastructura Naturans. Architetture di trasformazione della circonvallazione di Palermo
2022
The article discusses the theoretical system that supports design themes and processes of recycling large urban road infrastructures, referring to an international research that frames them among the sustainable regeneration processes of the contemporary city, and further evoking the project for the transformation of Palermo's ring road that has been elaborated within this research. Witnesses of past urban seasons, these infrastructures are marked by a peculiar morphology that deserves to be maintained, while they must emancipate themselves from asphalt and adapt to new urban mobilities. By hybridizing vegetation and buildings as never before, the longest roadways in our urban contexts may …
