Improving Participation, Accessibility and Compliance for Campus-Wide Mobile Emergency Alerting Systems

2009

University campus communities face a variety of hazards, from natural and technological disasters to terrorism and violence. In response to recent events, many campuses within the United States have begun to implement emergency notification systems utilizing email, text, and telephone-based messaging. These alerts are designed to reach members of the campus community, including faculty, staff, and students and most rely upon an opt-in model for participation. The present design of both the registration process and the notification messages raise several concerns as to the effectiveness of notification systems. This research presents findings from an examination of emergency notification sys…

5’ tRNA halves are highly expressed in the primate hippocampus and sequence-specifically regulate gene expression

2019

AbstractFragments of mature tRNAs have long been considered as mere degradation products without physiological function. However, recent reports show that tRNA fragments (tRFs) play prominent roles in diverse cellular processes across a wide spectrum of species. Contrasting the situation in other small RNA pathways the mechanisms behind these effects appear more diverse, more complex and are generally less well understood. In addition, surprisingly little is known about the expression profiles of tRFs across different tissues and species. Here, we provide an initial overview of tRF expression in different species and tissues, revealing very high tRF-levels particularly in the primate hippoc…

A critical role for VEGF and VEGFR2 in NMDA receptor synaptic function and fear-related behavior

2016

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is known to be required for the action of antidepressant therapies but its impact on brain synaptic function is poorly characterized. Using a combination of electrophysiological, single-molecule imaging and conditional transgenic approaches, we identified the molecular basis of the VEGF effect on synaptic transmission and plasticity. VEGF increases the postsynaptic responses mediated by the N-methyl-D-aspartate type of glutamate receptors (GluNRs) in hippocampal neurons. This is concurrent with the formation of new synapses and with the synaptic recruitment of GluNR expressing the GluN2B subunit (GluNR-2B). VEGF induces a rapid redistribution of Glu…

Amygdala

2015

The amygdala is considered a key center in managing emotional information and its dysfunction is at the base of disorders ranging through anxiety, depression, PTSD and autism. However, the amygdala seems heterogeneous both structurally (with pallial and supallial components) and functionally. Thus, whereas cortical and thalamic multimodal sensory inputs enter the basolateral complex, the corticomedial amygdala is dominated by olfactory and vomeronasal inputs. Intrinsic amygdaloid circuitry, connects these two amygdaloid divisions and convey processed information to the main amygdala outputs. The pallial amygdala is the main source for telencephalic outputs to associative cortical areas (e.g…

The multiple facets of Cajal-Retzius neurons.

2021

ABSTRACTCajal-Retzius neurons (CRs) are among the first-born neurons in the developing cortex of reptiles, birds and mammals, including humans. The peculiarity of CRs lies in the fact they are initially embedded into the immature neuronal network before being almost completely eliminated by cell death at the end of cortical development. CRs are best known for controlling the migration of glutamatergic neurons and the formation of cortical layers through the secretion of the glycoprotein reelin. However, they have been shown to play numerous additional key roles at many steps of cortical development, spanning from patterning and sizing functional areas to synaptogenesis. The use of genetic l…
