On the relationship between occlusion times and in-car glance durations in simulated driving

2023

Drivers have spare visual capacity in driving, and often this capacity is used for engaging in secondary in-car tasks. Previous research has suggested that the spare visual capacity could be estimated with the occlusion method. However, the relationship between drivers’ occlusion times and in-car glance duration preferences has not been sufficiently investigated for granting occlusion times the role of an estimate of spare visual capacity. We conducted a driving simulator experiment (N = 30) and investigated if there is an association between drivers’ occlusion times and in-car glance durations in a given driving scenario. Furthermore, we explored which factors and variables could explain t…

Antioxidant capacity in fruit of Citrus cultivars with marked differences in pulp coloration: Contribution of carotenoids and vitamin C.

2020

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the specific contribution of carotenoids and vitamin C to the lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidant capacity, respectively, of the pulp of citrus fruits using the genetic diversity in pigmentation and in the carotenoid complement. To this end, six citrus varieties were selected: two mandarins, Clemenules (Citrus clementina) and Nadorcott (C. reticulata); two grapefruits (C. paradisi), Marsh and Star Ruby; and two sweet oranges (C. sinensis), Valencia late and Valencia Ruby. Total carotenoid content and composition in the pulp of fruits were very different, in relation to their color singularities. Valencia Ruby and Nadorcott had the highest caroten…

Design of pharmacophoric group containing 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives and determination of spectrum of pharmacological activities

2017

Evaluation of the long-term treatment effects of idursulfase using statistical modelling: Data from the Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS)

2019

Treatment for mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II Hunter syndrome) is available in the form of intravenous enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with idursulfase (Shire, Lexington, MA, USA). This analysis used statistical modelling to evaluate the long-term treatment effects of idursulfase on selected clinical parameters based on data from HOS, a global, observational registry (Shire, Lexington, MA, USA). Mixed modelling was used to analyse data from male patients followed prospectively in HOS who had received idursulfase for 5-8 years and information available for two or more timepoints, of which one was pre-ERT. Data were excluded from patients with only pre-ERT information available, who ha…

Vitamin C, vitamin A, phenolic compounds and total antioxidant capacity of new fruit juice and skim milk mixture beverages marketed in Spain

2007

Abstract The growing interest in new functional foods with special characteristics and health properties has led to the development of new beverages based on fruit juice–skim milk mixtures. The proliferation of ready-to-drink beverages has caused the market to focus its interest on these products. Commercial conventionally pasteurized or sterilized beverages based on a mixture of fruit juice and skim milk were evaluated nutritionally for their concentrations of vitamin C, vitamin A and phenolic compounds and their total antioxidant capacity, taking the influence of physicochemical parameters into account. The main contribution to the total antioxidant capacity (TEAC, trolox equivalent antio…

Effects of intrinsic aerobic capacity, aging and voluntary running on skeletal muscle sirtuins and heat shock proteins

2016

Aim Sirtuins are proteins that connect energy metabolism, oxidative stress and aging. Expression of heat shock proteins (Hsps) is regulated by heat shock factors (HSFs) in response to various environmental and physiological stresses, such as oxidative stress. Oxidative stress accumulates during aging which makes cells more prone to DNA damage. Although many experimental animal models have been designed to study the effects of knockdown or overexpression of sirtuins, HSFs and Hsps, little is known about how aging per se affects their expression. Here we study the impact of intrinsic aerobic capacity, aging and voluntary exercise on the levels of sirtuins, HSFs and Hsps in skeletal muscle. Me…

The use of steel angles for the connection of laminated glass beams: Experiments and modelling

2012

Abstract In the present paper the experimental results relative to three-point bending tests on multilayer glass beams and on semi-rigid connections realised with stainless double web angles are presented and discussed. Small and medium size glass beams were tested and load–deflection curves and crack patterns at failure were recorded. The laminated glass specimens, of equal cross-section, were characterised by three different combinations of annealed float and fully thermally tempered glass plies and different interlayers. Steel joints constituted by double web angles to connect two glass beams were tested adopting several geometrical configurations and using stainless steel bolts preloade…

Conversion of existing roundabouts into turbo-roundabouts: case studies from real world, Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture 6(8)

2012

Compared with roundabouts the main advantages of turbo-roundabouts are the reduction in the number of potential conflicting points and the lower speed of vehicles through the intersection; they both can improve road safety conditions at the junction. Moreover, the physical delimitation among lanes limits the side-by-side accident risk. These aspects make turbo-roundabouts more appropriate than roundabouts when a higher level of safety has to be guaranteed, particularly in presence of relevant pedestrian and two-wheels traffic volumes. The present paper has three main objectives : 1) to discuss general design criteria and functional principles of turbo roundabouts; 2) to give the geometric d…

Rectifiability and analytic capacity in the complex plane

1995

Analytic capacity and removable sets In this chapter we shall discuss a classical problem in complex analysis and its relations to the rectifiability of sets in the complex plane C . The problem is the following: which compact sets E ⊃ C are removable for bounded analytic functions in the following sense? (19.1) If U is an open set in C containing E and f : U\E → C is a bounded analytic function, then f has an analytic extension to U . This problem has been studied for almost a century, but a geometric characterization of such removable sets is still lacking. We shall prove some partial results and discuss some other results and conjectures. For many different function classes a complete so…

Role of Activity in Defining Metabolic and Contractile Adaptations After SCI

2016

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can lead to moderate to severe muscle paralysis, loss of lower-limb functionality and often results in a reduced physical activity. As a consequence, people with SCI demonstrate numerous metabolic and contractile transformations such as leg muscles atrophy, a transformation from slow, fatigue-resistant fibers to fast, fatigable fibers, a decreased vascularization. Appropriate exercise and most especially exercise using functional electrical stimulation (FES) is now well-known to have beneficial effects on muscle characteristics, force output, exercise capacity, but also bone mineral density and cardiovascular parameters. For example, increases in muscle mass and str…
