Background There are claims that dietary supplementation of unsaturated fatty acids could help children with dyslexia to overcome their reading problems. However, these claims have not yet been empirically tested. Methods This study was designed to test whether dietary supplementation was superior to placebo in treating reading, spelling or other reading-related skills of children with dyslexia. Aggregation of the amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) into fibrillar structures is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Thus, preventing self-assembly of the Aβ peptide is an attractive therapeutic strategy. Here, we used experimental techniques and atomistic simulations to investigate the influence of carnosine, a dipeptide naturally occurring in the brain, on Aβ aggregation. Abstract SAMP1 is a line of inbred mice with a pronounced misbalance between generation and neutralization of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in brain and other tissues. This results in accumulation of molecular defects in lipids, proteins and DNA moieties. The metabolic disorders appear at a very early stage of ontogenic development and induce morphological and behavioral defects manifesting from the fourth month after birth. 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) treatment of these mice induced specific changes that closely resembled parkinsonian syndrome. Neuropeptide carnosine prevented toxic effects of MPTP and protected the animals against experimental parkinsonism.
Effect of sodium bicarbonate and beta-alanine supplementation on maximal sprint swimming

Background. This study examined the effect of simultaneous supplementation of extracellular buffer sodium bicarbonate (SB) and intracellular buffer beta-alanine (BA) on maximal sprint swimming. Methods. Thirteen competitive male swimmers completed 4 different treatments (placebo [PL], SB, BA + PL, and BA + SB) in a crossover procedure. PL or SB supplementation (0.3 g/kg body weight) was ingested 60 min before two maximal 100-m freestyle swims that were performed with a passive recovery of 12-min between each swim.
