O evento na categorização de migrantes: Explorando questões de “eventfulness” nas Américas

2020

Abstract The categories that define people on the move must be understood as unstable, contingent, and provisional processes. This paper contributes to a growing body of scholarship that explores the lived complexities of migrant categorization and their social implications. Based on fieldwork in Brazil and Central America, the paper investigates the processual character of categorization by intertwining temporal and spatial dimensions, focusing on specific events to understand the occasions, circumstances, and intentions that bring about adapted or entirely new categories. An eventful notion of categorization demonstrates not only how categories come into being but also how categories rema…

‘White men can’t jump in a black basketball game?’ An exploratory investigation of implicit strategies of outgroup discrimination

2017

AbstractExamining the ‘natural’ athlete myth and utilizing the recent literature on cultural/social factors in athleticism and basketball, this study through survey research examines the influence of stereotypes on the impression formation of basketball players. The primary research question is to determine from a group of students the attitudes of basketball players in terms of how they evaluate white and black players in basketball. The purpose is to identify participants’ perceptions and their appreciation as to whether or not black are superior to white basketball players. The theoretical framework employed is articulated around the theory of social categorization and racial stereotypes…

Vertical Governance, National Regulation and Autonomy of Local Policy Making

2015

International audience; This chapter introduces a categorization of the 11 European countries according to their general vertical governance structures between national, regional and local levels in welfare policy making. It investigates the extent to which, and how, local policies and service provision are regulated and controlled from the national state level, and how much space this leaves for local policy actors in welfare policy formation. The analysis takes into account that local welfare policies are formulated in the context of national and to some extent international policies. The 11 countries can be divided into three groups, having a centralized (England, Ireland), multi-level (…

Identity dynamics and social partitions : the case of identity "racial" Blacks in France

2011

Our research work investigates - from a psycho-social point of view - the «racial» identity of the black population in France, notably in their relation with the white population, so as to point up the identity dynamics that exist between the various groups. The theoretical framework is related to social grouping and one of its developments, i.e. the concept of social partitioning. Such conception is based on the existence of several types of inter-category relations (partitioning) that allow apprehending the nature of individuals’ identity positioning within the framework of an inter-group relation and make it dynamic through the notion of co-construction. Our methodology is based mainly o…

A Metric for Automatic Word categorization

2008

This paper presents a metric to be used by the working prototype WIH (Web Intelligent Handler). This metric (referred here as po) is designed to reflect main topic words and discriminate certain text profiles through word weightings. The actual version is designed only for Spanish web texts. Statistical analyses show that it is possible to differentiate text profiles upon po behavior. A poll is presented also, showing that it is a good main words discriminator. This paper is posted here as a new algorithm useful for Spanish text processing.

Check-list of Italian Birds, updated to the end of 2014

2015

We provide a check-list of Italian birds with major emphasis on the phenological categorization of each taxon, following the approach and updating the results of an analogous list previously published (Brichetti & Massa, 1998). In this list we based on the IOC World Bird List (Gill & Donsker, 2015) for nomenclature, species sequence and higher level taxonomy (from genus to order). This compilation takes into account the decisions made by the Italian Ornithological Commission (COI) and includes 548 species, recorded in Italy until the end of 2014.

Energy performance of architectural heritage: characteristics of the historic buildings in Palermo

2015

The current researches on the energy and environmental improvement of historic architecture aim to develop strategies respectful of its aesthetic and material features. This requires a deep knowledge of the characters strictly connected to a local context. This paper focuses on the historic architecture of Palermo and analyses, among its features, those which particularly influence its energy and environmental performance. For this purpose the building typologies introduced by the urban regulations can be useful for a categorization on the basis of the most recent European researches.

Sustainable Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Business Strategic Approach for Sustainable Development

2017

This paper proposes sustainable entrepreneurial orientation (SEO) as a multidimensional construct that offers researchers the possibility of empirically testing their theoretical proposals in the sustainable entrepreneurship field. The authors propose an integration of different theories. In accordance with the dynamic capabilities view, SEO is approached under an organizational paradigm of strategic orientations delimited by competitive culture and multiple orientation perspectives. Furthermore, SEO's nature is conceived at a firm-based entrepreneurship level and is based on an integrated triple bottom line sustainability. This approach is conceptualized using a categorization scheme and d…

A multiagent system approach for image segmentation using genetic algorithms and extremal optimization heuristics

2006

We propose a new distributed image segmentation algorithm structured as a multiagent system composed of a set of segmentation agents and a coordinator agent. Starting from its own initial image, each segmentation agent performs the iterated conditional modes method, known as ICM, in applications based on Markov random fields, to obtain a sub-optimal segmented image. The coordinator agent diversifies the initial images using the genetic crossover and mutation operators along with the extremal optimization local search. This combination increases the efficiency of our algorithm and ensures its convergence to an optimal segmentation as it is shown through some experimental results.
