On the Measurement of Dead Time in Micellar Liquid Chromatography

Abstract Modelling of the retention of solutes in micellar liquid chromatography allows the optimization of the resolution of a mixture of solutes and the determination of physico-chemical retention parameters. Both tasks imply the calculation of capacity factors, which are severely affected by the value of dead time. However, the determination of the dead time is not easy when a micellar mobile phase is used owing to the wide and variable perturbations that appear at the heads of the chromatograms. Quantitation of hydrophobicity in micellar liquid chromatography

Abstract Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) is shown to be a promising technique for measuring the hydrophobicity of solutes. The presence of micelles has a profound effect on the chromatographic characteristics of reversed-phase columns. The linear relationships between the logarithm, log k , of the retention factor and such diverse properties as the number of carbon atoms in homologous series, octanol–water partition coefficients and solvatochromic parameters, which are observed in conventional reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), are not usually valid in MLC. Determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma samples by micellar liquid chromatography and direct injection of sample

A liquid chromatographic procedure is proposed for the determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma samples with direct injection. The method uses a Spherisorb octadecylsilane ODS-2 C18 analytical column and a micellar mobile phase containing 0.15 M sodium dodecyl sulphate, 0.5% triethylamine at pH 2.5 and 10% propanol. The UV detection was carried out at 300 nm. Plasma sample preparation required only adequate dilution with the mobile phase before injection into the chromatographic system. The proposed method allows the determination of procaine and tetracaine in plasma at therapeutic levels.

Surfactant addition above the critical micellar concentration (CMC), in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), was proposed as a way to modify the selectivity and analysis time, giving rise to a chromatographic mode called micellar liquid chromatography (MLC). However, solutions containing only surfactant are too weak and yield poor peak shape. This was remediated by the addition of a small amount of organic solvent. To preserve the existence of micelles, in MLC high contents of organic solvent are avoided. Furosemide assay in pharmaceuticals by Micellar liquid chromatography: study of the stability of the drug.

A simplified high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the determination of furosemide (4-chloro-N-furfuryl-5-sulphamoylanthranillic acid), which makes use of UV detection, a C18, reversed-phase column, and micellar mobile phases of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and 1-propanol at pH 3 buffered with phosphate system. The most adequate experimental conditions to handle furosemide solutions in the analytical laboratory are studied. Surfactant Association: Recent Theoretical and Experimental Developments

A theoretical model describing the association of ionic surfactants into rod-shaped micelles is combined with an approximate formula for the viscosity increase induced by rod-shaped aggregates. It is shown that most of the thermodynamic parameters of the association model can be obtained from viscosity measurements. The approach is applied to micellar solutions of hexadecylpyridinium salts. The pronounced effect of counter-ion concentration on the growth of rod-shaped micelles can be attributed to a slightly higher degree of counter-ion association in the cylindrical part than in the end portions.
