Who Moves to Depressed Regions? An Analysis of Migration Streams in Finland in the 1990s

Depressed regions typically lose a large number of migrants but simultaneously are destination regions for some migrants. This study analyzes those people who decided to move to depressed regions in Finland in 1993-1996. The analysis is based on a 1 percent sample drawn from the Finnish longitudinal census. The results show that migration into depressed regions is also a selective process. Return migration is only one part of this migration. However, the more educated an individual is, the more likely she or he is to move to a flourishing region. The process of concentration of human capital is reinforced by interregional migration.

Comparative survey on the population of the Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus in the salt pans of Trapani province. This paper deals with a 2016 census of the breeding population of the Kentish plover in the saltpans of trapani and of the Stagnone di marsala. In the same area a previous census of this species was carried out forty years ago by Massa (1977). the comparison between data collected in the 1970s and in 2016 reveals that the population of the Kentish plover has been dramatically declining, with 70% decrease in the overall area (ca. 1,230 ha). Retirement Age Across Countries: The Role of Occupations

Cross-country variation in effective retirement age is usually attributed to institutional differences that affect individuals’ incentives to retire. This paper suggests a different approach to explain this variation. Since working individuals in different occupations naturally retire at different ages, the composition of occupations within an economy matters for its average effective retirement age. Using U.S. Census data we infer the average retirement age by occupation, which we then use to predict the retirement age of 38 countries, using the occupational distribution of these countries. En 1938, la escritora inglesa Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) completaba la escritura de Rebecca. En 1940, se estrenaba la adaptación cinematográfica, dirigida por Alfred Hitchcock.
