Mesoporous SBA-15 silica modified with cerium oxide: Effect of ceria loading on support modification

2010

Abstract The present work investigates the effect of ceria loading on silica SBA-15. Five CeO2/SBA-15 samples with CeO2 content equal to 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 wt% were prepared by wetness-impregnation of the support with cerium nitrate hexahydrate, as precursor, dissolved in ethanol. After drying at room temperature, the resulting samples were calcined at 400 °C for 2h. Characterizations by BET surface area and pore-size distribution, XRD, NH3-TPD and H2-TPR were performed.

Structural and Chemical Characterization of Cerium Oxide Thin Layers Grown on Silicon Substrate

2015

In this study, we report transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy study of cerium oxide thin layers deposited on silicon substrate. Transmission electron microscopy experiments have revealed the flat morphology of the deposited layers. In addition, studies of high resolution images have indicated the presence of mainly ceria crystallized nanoparticles. Energy electron loss spectroscopy measurements were also performed in scanning mode to study the evolution of the cerium valence. In addition to Ce4+ inside the layer, the presence of amorphous cerium silicate with valence +3 is pointed out at the vicinity of the substrate.

Effect of Impurities (Carbon and Manganese) on Iron Oxidation at High Temperature: Impurities-Rare Earth Element (Cerium) Interactions

1997

XPS study of supported gold catalysts:the role of Au0 and Au+? species as active sites.

2006

Gold nanoparticles supported on different oxides (SiO2, CeO2 and TiO2) were prepared by the SMAD (solvated metal atom dispersion) and deposition–precipitation (DP) techniques. The physical and chemical characterization of the catalysts was performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the catalytic activity was tested during the reaction of low temperature CO oxidation. The structural and surface analyses evidenced the presence of small gold crystallites (cluster size ∼2–5 nm) in all the SMAD-prepared samples and oxidized gold species in the case of the DP catalysts. A different surface distribution of ionic gold species was found on the different suppo…

Relationship between structure and CO oxidation activity of ceria supported gold catalysts

2005

Gold catalysts supported on cerium oxide were prepared by solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD), by deposition-precipitation (DP), and by coprecipitation (CP) methods and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The catalytic activity was tested in the CO oxidation reaction. The structural and surface analyses evidenced the presence of a modified ceria phase in the case of the DP sample and the presence of pure ceria and gold metal crystallites in the case of the SMAD and CP samples. The DP sample, after a mild treatment in air at 393 K, exhibited only ionic gold, and it was very active below 273 K. By…

Total oxidation of naphthalene with high selectivity using a ceria catalyst prepared by a combustion method employing ethylene glycol.

2009

Abstract During the catalytic combustion of naphthalene, compounds other than CO 2 are often obtained. These products, as polymerized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, oxygenated aromatic compounds and benzene derivate compounds, are usually more toxic than naphthalene. At the present work it is shown a nanocrystalline cerium oxide prepared by a combustion method employing a proper ethylene glycol concentration that exhibits very high activity in the decomposition of naphthalene in the presence of air and, most importantly, a selectivity value towards CO 2 of 100% for any range of conversions and/or temperatures used. In addition, it has been demonstrated that the amount of ethylene glycol …

Oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane over NiO–CeO2 mixed oxides catalysts

2012

[EN] In this paper we present the synthesis, characterization and catalytic behaviour in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane of NiO-CeO2 mixed oxides. The addition of cerium oxide to NiO strongly modifies its catalytic performance, although the changes in the catalytic behaviour depend on the catalyst composition. The incorporation of low amounts of cerium oxide to NiO multiplies the productivity to ethylene in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane by a factor of ca. 7, which is the result of an increase in both catalytic activity and selectivity to ethylene. The enhanced activity has been related to the remarkable increase of the surface area of catalyst and the low crystal sizes of …

EXAFS study of ceria–lanthana-based TWC promoters prepared by sol–gel routes

2003

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments at the Ce K- and La K-edges were performed on ceria–lanthana–alumina three-way catalysts promoters prepared by sol–gel routes, in order to investigate the effect of lanthanum doping on the ceria structure. The formation of Ce1−xLaxO2−x/2 solid solution, already observed by X-ray diffraction, was confirmed by EXAFS analysis, while no experimental evidence of a Ce–Al interaction was found. In presence of cerium and aluminum, lanthanum is involved in the formation of solid solution with CeO2 and of La–Al compounds. When the La:Al molar ratio is sufficiently high, the growth of a tridimensionally ordered LaAlO3 perovskite compound is …

A comparison between photocatalytic and catalytic oxidation of 2-Propanol over Au/TiO2-CeO2 catalysts

2016

Abstract Photocatalytic and catalytic oxidation of 2-propanol, representative of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), were compared over mixed TiO 2 –CeO 2 -based catalysts. The effect of different amounts of CeO 2 and the presence of gold (1 wt%) on TiO 2 was investigated. In the photocatalytic oxidation CeO 2 had a negative effect on the performance towards the alcohol conversion of both TiO 2 –CeO 2 and Au/TiO 2 –CeO 2 catalysts, being Au/TiO 2 the most active system. On the contrary mixed TiO 2 –CeO 2 and Au/TiO 2 –CeO 2 samples showed a higher catalytic oxidation efficiency for 2-propanol conversion compared to the single oxides. In this case Au/CeO 2 catalyst had the best performance. …

Exploring the photothermo-catalytic performance of brookite tio2-ceo2 composites

2020

The thermocatalytic, photocatalytic and photothermo-catalytic oxidation of some volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 2-propanol, ethanol and toluene, was investigated over brookite TiO2-CeO2 composites. The multi-catalytic approach based on the synergistic effect between solar photocatalysis and thermocatalysis led to the considerable decrease in the conversion temperatures of the organic compounds. In particular, in the photothermo-catalytic runs, for the most active samples (TiO2-3 wt% CeO2 and TiO2-5 wt% CeO2), the temperature at which 90% of VOC conversion occurred was about 60 &deg
