Ceramics, Marbles and Stones in the Light of Neutrons: Characterization by Various Neutron Methods

2016

In this chapter we give a brief overview of neutron based analytical investigations applied to study archaeological ceramics, and different types of stones. Since the vast majority of archaeological objects are made of ceramics and various stones—all are of geological origin—, one of the key objectives of these studies to determine the origin of raw material. This research is called provenance research, and a wide range of neutron based methods are applicable in it. Following a very basic, user-oriented description of the methods, we introduce examples from our everyday practice. The examples are about provenance of prehistoric stone tools, about the sources of 4th–3rd c. B.C. millennium li…

Synthesis and characterization of titanium dioxide and titanium dioxide–based materials

2021

Abstract The aim of the chapter is to describe some different preparation methods and characterization techniques for bare, supported, and coupled TiO2 samples used in different fields. Particular attention has been paid both to the fundamental aspects of the different TiO2 preparation and characterization methods and the practical applications that the results obtained can have. Various examples have been reported from the literature to demonstrate the usefulness that students and scientists working with TiO2-based materials in different research areas can derive from various characterizations.

On the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay property for sets of points in multiprojective spaces

2017

We study the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for finite sets of points in multiprojective spaces, especially ( P 1 ) n (\mathbb P^1)^n . A combinatorial characterization, the ( ⋆ ) (\star ) -property, is known in P 1 × P 1 \mathbb P^1 \times \mathbb P^1 . We propose a combinatorial property, ( ⋆ s ) (\star _s) with 2 ≤ s ≤ n 2\leq s\leq n , that directly generalizes the ( ⋆ ) (\star ) -property to ( P 1 ) n (\mathbb P^1)^n for larger n n . We show that X X is ACM if and only if it satisfies the ( ⋆ n ) (\star _n) -property. The main tool for several of our results is an extension to the multiprojective setting of certain liaison methods in projective space.

Electronic and mechanical characterization of self-assembled alkanethiol monolayers by scanning tunneling microscopy combined with interaction-force-…

1993

We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to study self-assembled monolayers of mercaptohexadecanol in ultrigh vacuum. In addition to tunneling, the interaction force gradient acting between tip and sample was measured. Analysis of the force-gradient data shows that the tip is in mechanical contact with the surface of the monolayer which, in turn, is elastically compressed. The lateral dimensions of the mechanical contact are substantially (approximately five times) larger than the width of the tunneling-current filament. The results suggest that the compression of the monolayer constitutes an integral part of tunneling through the molecules

Automated Cancer Marker Characterization in Human Plasma Using SUrface PLASMON Resonance in Array combined with Mass Spectrometry (SUPRA-MS)

2012

International audience; The combination of Surface Plasmon Resonance technology with Mass Spectrometry becomes a key method for the characterization of targeted proteins in the fields of diagnosis and functional proteomics. We demonstrated in this work the ability of our SPRi-chip to capture targeted protein in biological fluids and in situ analyze by MS and MS/MS modes through automated procedure to go beyond classical immunoassays. Here, we established a proof of concept of SUPRA-MS for the detection, the identification and the characterization of a potential breast cancer marker.

Exchange coupling in an electrodeposited magnetic bilayer of Prussian blue analogues

2015

Bilayers of Prussian blue analogues (PBA) constituted of hard and soft magnets have been fabricated by means of electrochemical deposition. This method affords a good contact between two PBA thin films of nanometer thickness. Complete characterization of the resulting system has been performed, which has allowed the determination of the preservation of the chemical identity of both materials during the electrodeposition and the establishment of a clear interface between them. The magnetic behavior of the bilayer can be explained in terms of an exchange-spring magnet.

A note on strong protomodularity, actions and quotients

2013

Abstract In order to study the problems of extending an action along a quotient of the acted object and along a quotient of the acting object, we investigate some properties of the fibration of points. In fact, we obtain a characterization of protomodular categories among quasi-pointed regular ones, and, in the semi-abelian case, a characterization of strong protomodular categories. Eventually, we return to the initial questions by stating the results in terms of internal actions.

Boundary Regularity for the Porous Medium Equation

2018

We study the boundary regularity of solutions to the porous medium equation $u_t = \Delta u^m$ in the degenerate range $m>1$. In particular, we show that in cylinders the Dirichlet problem with positive continuous boundary data on the parabolic boundary has a solution which attains the boundary values, provided that the spatial domain satisfies the elliptic Wiener criterion. This condition is known to be optimal, and it is a consequence of our main theorem which establishes a barrier characterization of regular boundary points for general -- not necessarily cylindrical -- domains in ${\bf R}^{n+1}$. One of our fundamental tools is a new strict comparison principle between sub- and superpara…

Total curvatures of compact complex submanifolds in $$C/P^n$$

1995

LetM be a complex submanifold in\(C/P^n\). We define the total curvatures ofM and we get a local interpretation of them. Finally, we give a topological characterization for the total (non-absolute) curvature of complex hypersurfaces in\(C/P^n\).
