Electromyographic comparison of elastic resistance and machine exercises for high-intensity strength training in patients with chronic stroke

2016

To investigate whether elastic resistance training can induce comparable levels of muscle activity as conventional machine training in patients with chronic stroke.Comparative study.Outpatient rehabilitation facility.Stroke patients (N=18) with hemiparesis (mean age, 57 ± 8y).Patients performed 3 consecutive repetitions at 10 repetition maximum of unilateral knee extension and flexion using elastic resistance and conventional machine training.Surface electromyography was measured in vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, and semitendinosus and was normalized to maximal electromyography (% of max) of the nonparetic leg.In the paretic leg, agonist muscle activity ranged from 18% t…

Relevance of Polypharmacy for Clinical Outcome in Patients Receiving Vitamin K Antagonists.

2018

BACKGROUND Although polypharmacy is associated with a negative clinical outcome in various settings and commonly observed in patients receiving oral anticoagulation therapy, evidence on the relevance for the clinical outcome of anticoagulated patients is currently limited. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of polypharmacy on the clinical outcomes among patients taking phenprocoumon. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Regular medical care. PARTICIPANTS Information on 2011 individuals receiving vitamin K antagonists was available for analysis from the prospective multicenter thrombEVAL study. MEASUREMENTS Data were obtained from clinical visits, computer-assisted interv…

Para-perirenal distribution of body fat is associated with reduced glomerular filtration rate regardless of other indices of adiposity in hypertensiv…

2018

Obesity is a well‐known risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease. Recently, para‐perirenal ultrasonographic fat thickness (PUFT) has shown to correlate with both total and visceral fat better than body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and other indices of obesity. Moreover, a local paracrine and mechanical action of the PUFT on kidney has been described in recent studies. Aim of our study was to assess the relationship between glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and PUFT in comparison with other anthropometric and ultrasonographic indices of adiposity. Two hundred and ninety‐six hypertensive patients were enrolled. PUFT, cutis‐rectis thickness and re…

Electromyographic comparison of conventional machine strength training versus bodyweight exercises in patients with chronic stroke

2017

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether bodyweight exercises can induce comparable levels of muscle activity as conventional machine exercises in chronic stroke patients.METHODS: Eighteen patients performed three repetitions of bilateral- and unilateral machine leg press and the bodyweight exercises chair rise and hip thrust. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from 10 lower extremity muscles and normalized to maximal EMG (nEMG) of the non-paretic leg.RESULTS: For the paretic leg, the bodyweight exercises showed comparable levels of nEMG in 6 out of 10 muscles compared with the bilateral leg press. Vastus lateralis nEMG was higher during bilateral leg press compared with hip thrust (38% […

Long-lasting remission of primary hepatic lymphoma and hepatitis C virus infection achieved by the alpha-interferon treatment

2004

Primary hepatic lymphoma is a rare but well-defined lymphoma entity that often pursues an aggressive clinical course. Most cases have been described in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related chronic liver disease patients. Although anthracycline-based chemotherapy has been reported to be highly effective, the best therapeutic strategy has not been defined yet. The prognosis is dismal especially in patients treated with chemotherapy alone or when an advanced liver disease is present. Herein, we describe a case of primary hepatic large B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, in a patient with HCV chronic infection. After a minor response with eight cycles of CHOP chemotherapy, a complete and sustained remiss…

Percutaneous coronary intervention of chronic total occlusions in patients with low left ventricular ejection fraction

2017

Abstract Objectives The study sought to assess the outcome of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of chronic total occlusions (CTOs) in patients with low left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (≤35%). Background Data regarding the outcome of PCI in patients with low LVEF affected by CTO are scarcely reported. Methods The authors performed a prospective longitudinal multicenter study including consecutive patients undergoing elective PCI of CTOs. Patients were subdivided into 3 groups: group 1 (LVEF ≥50%), group 2 (LVEF 35% to 50%), and group 3 (LVEF ≤35%). Results A total of 839 patients (mean 64.6 ± 10.5 years of age, 87.7% men) underwent CTO PCI attempts. Baseline LVEF ≤35% was pr…

Contractile hyporesponsiveness to norepinephrine of forearm veins in chronic renal failure.

2006

Background We recently reported that endothelium-dependent relaxation is impaired in forearm veins from patients with chronic renal failure. However, assessment of responses to norepinephrine remains controversial. We examined the contractile response to norepinephrine in forearm veins from patients on chronic hemodialysis and the role of nitric oxide (NO), prostanoids, and Ca 2+ -activated K + channels in this response. Methods Isometric contraction curves were obtained in rings of forearm vein from 21 dialyzed patients and 12 multiorgan donors in response to norepinephrine (1 nmol/L to 10 μmol/L) or KCl (5 to 100 mmol/L). Results Veins from uremic patients were markedly less responsive to…

Risk factors for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension – Importance of thyroid disease and function

2019

Abstract Introduction Although a number of risk factors for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) have been reported, the exact prevalence is controversial and varies between published cohorts. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of risk factors in operable CTEPH patients with special emphasis on thyroid disease and function. Material and methods Overall, 228 CTEPH patients (47.7% female; median age 63 [IQR 52–72] years) scheduled for pulmonary endarterectomy between 01/2014 and 12/2015 were studied. Prevalence of risk factors was assessed, and patients were classified according to their thyroid function based on laboratory measurements. Results As…

GDS score as screening tool to assess the risk of impact of chronic conditions and depression on quality of life in hospitalized elderly patients in …

2021

Aging of population is characterized by multiple chronic conditions in the same individual. Health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) reflects the multidimensional impact of chronic disease on population and it is increasingly analysed as outcomes. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the predictors of quality of life among elderly patients hospitalized in internal medicine ward, investigating the effect of comorbidities on health-related quality of life. Data collected in this cross-sectional study were analysed. Socio-demographic, clinical characteristics, disease distribution and quality of life by the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) were evaluated. Of 240 inpatients, subje…
