Clinical recrudescence of chronic untreated P. malariae infection after BNT162b2 CoVID-19 vaccine
2022
We described a case of clinical reactivation of chronic P. malariae infection following CoVID-19 vaccination with BNT162b2 (Pifzer-Biontech CoVID-19 vaccine) in a 48-year old Italian man.The patient came to our attention for fever of unknown origin show a quartan pattern (every third day) associated to splenomegaly, the onset of the fever occurred one month after CoVID-19 vaccination with BNT162b2. P. malariae was diagnosed using CarestartTM malaria rapid test and Polymerase-Chain Reaction. Post-vaccine transient reduction of immune reactivity is described in literature, although the mechanism is unknown.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.CC_BY_NC_ND_4.0
Carga y factores de riesgo para la neumonía adquirida en la comunidad de Pseudomonas aeruginosa : un estudio multinacional de prevalencia puntual de …
2018
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a challenging bacterium to treat due to its intrinsic resistance to the antibiotics used most frequently in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Data about the global burden and risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP are limited. We assessed the multinational burden and specific risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP. We enrolled 3193 patients in 54 countries with confirmed diagnosis of CAP who underwent microbiological testing at admission. Prevalence was calculated according to the identification of P. aeruginosa. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant P. aeru…
Biopartitioning micellar chromatography to predict ecotoxicity
2001
Abstract The knowledge of chemical toxicity is necessary for risk assessment and ranking of chemicals according their hazard potential. The use of biopartitioning micellar chromatography has proven to be valid in predicting several biological activities of different kinds of compounds. In this paper, the relationships between retention of 66 organic pollutants and several ecotoxicity parameters are studied. Adequate correlations retention-ecotoxicity (LC 50 in fish and daphnia, EC 50 in green algae and daphnia, values of chronic toxicity in fish and green algae and bioconcentration factor in fish) of organic pollutants are obtained. These models are compared with the corresponding obtained …
Air Quality and Chronic Stress: A Representative Study of Air Pollution (PM2.5, PM10) in Germany.
2019
Objective With rising attention on climate change and the aftermath of burning fossil fuels, there is much concern regarding the effects of air pollution on physical and psychological health. However, the relationship between chronic stress and air pollution is relatively unexplored in humans. Methods By combining German representative data with national pollution data and using step-wise regression analyses, this study investigates how air pollution (particulate matter 2.5 and 10 [PM2.5 and PM10]) impacts ones' chronic stress levels (TICS). Results Results show PM2.5 fine-dust particles significantly affect chronic stress, while PM10 has no such effect. Air pollution (PM2.5), age, and inco…
Granulocytenfunktionsdefekte bei granulomatser muco-cutaner candidiasis
1975
Catheter venography for the assessment of internal jugular veins and azygous vein: position statement by expert panel of the International Society fo…
2013
This document by an expert panel of the International Society for Neurovascular Disease is aimed at presenting current technique and interpretation of catheter venography of the internal jugular veins, azygous vein and other veins draining the central nervous system. Although interventionalists agree on general rules, significant differences exist in terms of details of venographic technique and interpretations of angiographic pictures. It is also suggested that debatable findings should be investigated using multimodal diagnostics. Finally, the authors recommend that any publication on chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency should include detailed description of venographic technique u…
Understanding youth chronic poverty in South of Europe
2010
This paper investigates chronic poverty among the youth in Southern Europe, which is characterized by very high levels of persistent poverty, and welfare systems which are unable to smooth disparities. The main aim is to investigate on how longitudinal poverty differs in socio-demographic and economic characteristics among the Mediterranean youth. The intensity of poverty over time is measured by a new longitudinal poverty index based on the rationale of cumulative hardship. We tested the effects of many covariates on the incidence and intensity of chronic poverty, controlling for main socio-demographic and economic characteristics, using a ZINB model. The peculiar mix between the lack of e…
Urticaria in Pediatrics and During Pregnancy and Lactation: Highlights on Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Management
2021
Chronic urticaria (CU) in children as in adults is characterized by the presence of itchy wheals, angioedema, or both daily or almost daily for at least 6 weeks. Most cases of urticaria in the pediatric age group are acute [1–4]. CU is sub-classified as spontaneous (occurring without a known trigger) or inducible. There are also cases of spontaneous and inducible forms that co-exist. The chronic subtypes occur continuously but also recurrently, often in association with infections. In this chapter we will touch briefly on the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of acute urticaria in children. However, our primary goal is to highlight key findings regarding the epidemiology, dia…
The prognostic value of subjective nasal symptoms and SNOT-22 score in middle ear surgery
2022
Background: The relationship between nasal functions and middle ear surgery is still under debate. Nasal obstruction is considered as a negative prognostic factor in middle ear surgery. This is based on the theory that it may cause Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) by leading to reduced ventilation of the middle ear, as found in several patients with nasal septal deviation, chronic rhinitis and nasal polyps. Objectives: To assess how the subjective feeling of nasal function, evaluated by a preoperative questionnaire, may be predictive of surgical outcome and/or risk of failure in middle ear surgery. Methods: We prospectively evaluated data of patients undergoing middle ear surgery for chron…
