Rapporto costo-efficacia della terapia peginterferone α-2a + ribavirina in confronto a interferone α-2b + ribavirina in pazienti affetti da epatite c…

2004

Introduction In adults with previously untreated chronic hepatitis C (CHC), the combination of peginterferon α-2a plus ribavirin produces a higher rate of sustained virological response (SVR) than interferon α-2b plus ribavirin, but it is still unproven whether this increase is cost-effective. The objective of this study was to determine if the gain in SVR with peginterferon α-2a plus ribavirin is worth the incremental cost.

Nitroglycerin Hits the Nerve

Organic nitrates are still widely used for the treatment of acute and chronic angina and congestive heart failure. When given acutely, their effectiveness is indisputable; in contrast, their long-term efficacy is limited because of serious side effects such as the development of tolerance and

Obstructive Malformations of the Internal Jugular Vein

2021

Obstructive malformations of the internal jugular veins represent a relatively new clinical problem, which as of yet has not been fully understood. In normal subjects, the internal jugular vein is valveless, except for a single valve, situated just above the junction of this vein with the brachiocephalic vein. Usually, normal jugular valves exhibit a two-leaflet structure. Stenotic lesions of these veins were described for the first time in 2009 in a group of multiple sclerosis patients. The most common obstructive malformation of the internal jugular vein is a stenotic valve. There are several morphological types of such aberrant valves, comprising annular stenoses, valves with fused, reve…

Magnesium Role in Health and Longevity

2018

Reduced Magnesium (Mg) intake is a frequent cause of Mg deficit with age. A decreased intestinal Mg absorption and an increased Mg loss may also contribute, as well as the use of medicaments. Furthermore, Mg requirements may be higher with aging. Alterations of Mg metabolism with age, cellular Mg transport systems and problems with measurement methods are discussed. Mg contained in water is more bio-available than Mg in food and it is a possible alternative to Mg supplementation in the correction of Mg deficiencies. Mild to moderate Mg deficits are generally asymptomatic and clinical signs are usually absent or non-specific. Hyperemotionality, tremor, asthenia, sleep disorders, and amnesic …

Toxicity test of a dental commercial composite

2015

BACKGROUND: International rules must be followed for testing biosecurity in dental materials. A new brand of restorative material appeared in the market and regulations indicated that it should be tested for toxicity. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the 90-day sub chronic toxicity of one triethylene glycol dimethacrylate containing composite (MEDENTAL Light-Cure Composite™) orally administered to rats according to Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development no. 48 guidelines and the requirements specified in the ISO 10993-11. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wistar rats ate the polymerized composite during 90 days and were observed to determine changes in their behavior, …

Hepatitic C virus infection and autoimmunity : clinical features, diagnostic tools and therapeutical aspects

1995

Summary Since the genom of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) was detected the pathogenesis of a distinct group of chronic liver disease and some non-hepatic disorders of sofar unknown origin could be newly established. A wide variety of clinical features including vasculitis, glomerulonephritis, porphyria and rheumatoid-like symptoms may become apparant separately or in combination. HCV can be precipitated in cryoglobulins and tissue-related HCV was found in liver and kidney specimen, for instance. HCV-related cryoglobulinemia or circulating immune complexes often occur with vasculitis. Hematological changes may be present such as thrombocytopenia. A considerable amount of patients show circulati…

Therapy with lamivudine and steroids in a patient with acute hepatitis B and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.

2006

To the Editor: Tang et al.1 recently reported that lamivudine (LAM) improves renal outcome in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and membranous nephropathy. We would like to add our experience on acute hepatitis B and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis.

Alcohol and Cannabis Consumption Does Not Diminish Cure Rates in a Real-World Cohort of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infected Patients on Opioid Substit…

2019

Background: The importance of alcohol and cannabis consumption for the effectiveness of treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with direct acting antivirals (DAAs) in people on opioid substitution therapy (OST) has not been investigated in detail. Methods: We investigated sustained virological response (SVR) rates and proportion of lost to follow-up (LTFU) between OST (n = 739) and non-OST patients (n = 7008) in the German Hepatitis C-Registry (Deutsches Hepatitis C-Register, DHC-R), which is a national multicenter prospective non-interventional real-world registry. Non-OST patients comprised patients with former/current drug use (non-OST/DU; n = 1500) and patients never con…

Renal function is impaired in normotensive chronic HCV patients: role of insulin resistance.

2015

Renal dysfunction is an independent predictor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We investigated whether chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the related insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia influence renal function in comparison with a group of healthy subjects and with another group with metabolic syndrome. We enrolled 130 newly diagnosed HCV outpatients matched for age and gender with 130 patients with metabolic syndrome and 130 healthy subjects. Renal function was evaluated by calculation of glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR, mL/min/1.73 m2) using the CKD-EPI equation. The following laboratory parameters were measured: fasting plasma glucose and insulin, total, LDL- and…
