Topical 5'-methylthioadenosine in the treatment of symptomatic chronic venous insufficiency, haemorrhoids and superficial phlebitis. A double-blind p…

1992

500 patients entered a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial designed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of topical 5′-methylthioadenosine (MTA) 0.5% in relieving the major signs and symptoms related to chronic venous insufficiency, superficial phlebitis and first and second degree haemorrhoids.

Dentistry and internal medicine: from the focal infection theory to the periodontal medicine concept

2010

Abstract During past decades the relationship between dentistry and internal medicine and especially the concept of the so-called focal infection theory have long been a matter of debate. The pathogenesis of focal diseases has been classically attributed to dental pulp pathologies and periapical infections. Nonetheless, in recent years, their role is being dismissed while increasing interest is being devoted to the possible associations between periodontal infection and systemic diseases. In fact, periodontal pathogens and their products, as well as inflammatory mediators produced in periodontal tissues, might enter the bloodstream, causing systemic effects and/or contributing to systemic d…

Hepatitis C virus infection and global kidney health: the consensus proceedings of the International Federation of Kidney Foundations

2020

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important cause of major morbidities including chronic liver disease, liver cancer, and acute kidney injury (AKI) as well as chronic kidney disease (CKD). HCV can affect kidney health; among CKD and AKI patients with HCV infection, the clinical outcomes are worse. The prevalence of HCV infection is exceptionally high among dialysis and kidney transplant patients throughout the globe. It is estimated that 5% to 25% or more of dialysis dependent patients are affected by chronic HCV, based on the region of the world. Almost half of all deaths in CKD patients, including HCV-infected patients, are due to cardiovascular disease, and HCV infected patients ha…

Epidemiological Characterization and Determination of TP53 and IGHV Mutational Status of a Large Series of Previously-Untreated Chronic Lymphocytic L…

2021

Abstract Introduction: Among the genetic lesions described in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), TP53 and IGHV mutational status are well-established prognostic biomarkers. While mutations resulting in dysregulation of TP53 are associated with chemo-resistance, mutated IGHV (IGHV-M) identifies a good prognosis and unmutated (IGHV-UM) is associated with an aggressive clinical outcome. Thus, molecular assessment of TP53 and IGHV mutational status is recommended to make treatment decisions. Moreover, 30% of CLL patients have a highly homologous complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3), allowing their classification in subsets based on the stereotypical B-cell receptor immunoglobulins (BcR …

Responsiveness and minimal important difference of the urticaria control test

2017

This study demonstrates the responsiveness of the Urticaria Control Test (UCT). Changes of its score by 3 points or more reflect a clinically relevant change of disease control (minimal important difference).

The EDUCA (Elderly and Device Use in Chronic Asthma) multicentre Italian study on the assessment of errors and satisfaction in using the inhalers in …

2017

Background: The incorrect use of inhalers can negatively affect the outcomes of asthma treatment. We assessed whether, and to what extent, this is the case in elderly asthmatics. Methods: This is an observational, multicentre Italian study enrolling mild-to-severe asthmatic patients aged ≥65 yrs treated with inhaled drugs, by DPI or pressurized MDI (pMDI). Critical errors, patient9s satisfaction with their inhaler and adherence were evaluated by means of validated questionnaires; the patients were also trained to a correct use of their device. After 3 to 6 months patient were revaluated. Results: To date, 312 patients have been included (41% males, median age 71 yrs). At least one critical …

2019

Abstract Background Up to one-third of patients report persisting hemodynamic abnormalities and functional limitation over long-term follow-up after acute pulmonary embolism (PE). Purpose We tested whether a validated algorithm designed to rule-out chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) after acute PE can be used for identifying patients at lower risk of presenting with persisting symptoms and echocardiographic abnormalities. Methods The multicentre Follow-up of Acute Pulmonary Embolism (FOCUS) cohort study prospectively enrolled 1,100 consecutive patients diagnosed with acute symptomatic PE; two-year follow-up is ongoing. We focused on the scheduled visits for 3- and 12-mont…
