First Compton telescope prototype based on continuous LaBr3-SiPM detectors
2013
Abstract A first prototype of a Compton camera based on continuous scintillator crystals coupled to silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays has been successfully developed and operated. The prototype is made of two detector planes. The first detector is made of a continuous 16×18×5 mm 3 LaBr 3 crystal coupled to a 16-elements SiPM array. The elements have a size of 3×3 mm 3 in a 4.5×4.05 mm 2 pitch. The second detector, selected by availability, consists of a continuous 16×18×5 mm 3 LYSO crystal coupled to a similar SiPM array. The SPIROC1 ASIC is employed in the readout electronics. Data have been taken with a 22 Na source placed at different positions and images have been reconstructed with…
Preliminary design of the top cap of DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket segments
2020
Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activity, a research campaign has been carried out at the University of Palermo, in close cooperation with ENEA labs, in order to preliminary design the top cap foreseen for the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) breeding blanket segments. Due to the high heat and pressure loads acting on such component, its design results particularly demanding and a specific multi-physics approach is needed, covering several aspects from thermal-hydraulics to structural assessments. Preliminary detailed CAD model of the cap integrated into the upper region of the WCLL breeding blanket outboard central segment has been set-up, equipped with proper cooling …
Transient analysis of "2 inch Direct Vessel Injection line break" in SPES-2 facility by using TRACE code
2015
In the past few decades a lot of theoretical and experimental researches have been done to understand the physical phenomena characterizing nuclear accidents. In particular, after the Three Miles Island accident, several reactors have been designed to handle successfully LOCA events. This paper presents a comparison between experimental and numerical results obtained for the “2 inch Direct Vessel Injection line break” in SPES-2. This facility is an integral test facility built in Piacenza at the SIET laboratories and simulating the primary circuit, the relevant parts of the secondary circuits and the passive safety systems typical of the AP600 nuclear power plant. The numerical analysis her…
A dynamic load-balancing algorithm for molecular dynamics simulation on multi-processor systems
1991
Abstract A new algorithm for dynamic load-balancing on multi-processor systems and its application to the molecular dynamics simulation of the spinodal phase separation are presented. The load-balancer is distributed among the processors and embedded in the application itself. Tests performed on a transputer network show that the load-balancer behaves almost ideally in this application. The same approach can be easily extended to different multi-processor topologies or applications.
Concatenated logic functions using nanofluidic diodes with all-electrical inputs and outputs
2018
[EN] Nanopore-based logical schemes in ionic solutions typically involve single gates and chemical inputs. The design of computer-like functions requires the consecutive concatenation of several gates and the use of electrical potentials and currents to facilitate the downstream transfer of electrochemical information. We have demonstrated the robust operation of concatenated logic functions using biomimetic nanofluidic diodes based on single pore membranes. To this end, we have implemented first the logic functions AND and OR with combinations of single nanopores using all-electrical input and output signals. The concatenation of these gates allows the output of the OR gate to act as one o…
PSA Depletion Induces the Differentiation of Immature Neurons in the Piriform Cortex of Adult Mice
2021
Immature neurons are maintained in cortical regions of the adult mammalian brain. In rodents, many of these immature neurons can be identified in the piriform cortex based on their high expression of early neuronal markers, such as doublecortin (DCX) and the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). This molecule plays critical roles in different neurodevelopmental events. Taking advantage of a DCX-CreERT2/Flox-EGFP reporter mice, we investigated the impact of targeted PSA enzymatic depletion in the piriform cortex on the fate of immature neurons. We report here that the removal of PSA accelerated the final development of immature neurons. This was revealed by a h…
Light absorption and conversion in solar cell based on Si:O alloy
2013
Thin film Si:O alloys have been grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, as intrinsic or highly doped (1 to 5 at. % of B or P dopant) layers. UV-visible/near-infrared spectroscopy revealed a great dependence of the absorption coefficient and of the optical gap (Eg) on the dopant type and concentration, as Eg decreases from 2.1 to 1.9 eV, for the intrinsic or highly p-doped sample, respectively. Thermal annealing up to 400 °C induces a huge H out-diffusion which causes a dramatic absorption increase and a reduction of Eg, down to less than 1.8 eV. A prototypal solar cell has been fabricated using a 400 nm thick, p-i-n structure made of Si:O alloy embedded within flat transparent c…
Tensiostatic studies on formation and breakdown of anodic oxide films on tungsten in acidic chloride solutions
1977
Abstract The anodic behaviour of tungsten in HCl and HCl + KCl solutions has been extensively studied. For each solution, the applied voltage was increased from 1 V up to the breakdown voltage. Values of the current and open circuit voltage decays were recorded. The HCl concentration was varied from 0.05 M to 12 M while appropriate addition to KCl was made to reach assigned molarities of the Cl − ion. The results are discussed and qualitatively interpreted in terms of the different influence of the H + and Cl − ions.
Voltage collapse proximity indicators for radial distribution networks
2007
Based on the single-line equivalent system of a radial distribution network, two simple methods to evaluate two efficient voltage collapse proximity indicators are presented and discussed. The two methods differ on the determination of the parameters which define the equivalent system from which the indicators are derived. Both methods can be conveniently used jointly for on-line applications to assess the state of a distribution system from the viewpoint of voltage stability; the first to monitoring the stability margin of the whole system loading, the second to sharpen the stability analysis at the critical node when the system operating point is in the vicinity of the loadability limit. …
<title>Optical sensing for early cardiovascular diagnostics</title>
2000
A sensor device for noninvasive detection and analysis of the pulsating blood flow waveforms by means of the reflective single-period photoplethysmorgraphy (SPPPG) technique has been designed and clinically tested. The sensor is operated jointly with any standard PC, by connecting the sensor head to the AD-card and using a separate hard disc with the signal processing software; all circuits are fed by the PC power supply. After processing, normalized shape of the mean SPPPG signal and its parameters are calculated and displayed; the measurement/processing time does not exceed 2 minutes. The clinically detected SPPPG signal shapes and corresponding parameters are presented and discussed. The…
