Density of Lipschitz functions in energy
2020
In this paper, we show that the density in energy of Lipschitz functions in a Sobolev space $N^{1,p}(X)$ holds for all $p\in [1,\infty)$ whenever the space $X$ is complete and separable and the measure is Radon and finite on balls. Emphatically, $p=1$ is allowed. We also give a few corollaries and pose questions for future work. The proof is direct and does not involve the usual flow techniques from prior work. It also yields a new approximation technique, which has not appeared in prior work. Notable with all of this is that we do not use any form of Poincar\'e inequality or doubling assumption. The techniques are flexible and suggest a unification of a variety of existing literature on th…
Priscien. Grammaire Livre XVIII - Syntaxe, 2
2017
Genotype–phenotype correlation in a new Fabry-disease-causing mutation
2019
Background: Fabry disease (FD) is a rare X-linked inherited lysosomal storage disorder caused by α-galactosidase A deficiency leading to intracellular glycosphingolipid accumulation. FD manifestation is multisystem, and can differ depending on disease-related genetic variants. Currently, more than 700 different FD-causing mutations have been identified in the human GLA gene. We identified a novel mutation in a Lithuanian family with classical manifestations of Fabry disease, revealing severe effects to the cardiovascular systems of heterozygous women. Case presentation: A 49-year-old woman underwent echocardiography due to progressive dyspnea that lasted seven years, reduced physical a…
Traveling Waves Emerging in a Diffusive Moving Filament System
2014
Starting from a minimal model for the actin cytoskeleton of motile cells we derive a spatially one dimensional model describing populations of right and left moving filaments with intrinsic velocity, diffusion and mutual alignment. For this model we derive traveling wave solutions whose speed and shape depend on the model parameters and the type of alignment. We discuss possible wave profiles obtained from analytical investigations as well as waves emerging in numerical simulations. In particular, we will explicitly comment on the observed wave speeds and how they are related to the model parameters. Moreover, some particularly interesting patterns being composed of several wave profiles ar…
Surface Segregation Entropy of Protons and Oxygen Vacancies in BaZrO3
2016
The perovskite BaZrO3 has attracted considerable attention in the recent decade due to its high temperature proton conducting properties, and possible application as electrolyte in intermediate temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers. In this contribution, we performed, for the first time, first-principles calculations of the phonon contribution to the defect thermodynamics of the ZrO2 terminated (001) surface of BaZrO3. The approach allows us to determine both the segregation enthalpy and entropy of defects, which we apply to two fundamental defects in BaZrO3; fully charged oxygen vacancies (vO••) and protonic defects (OHO•). The calculations show that both defects exhibit favorable segre…
A no-go result for the quantum damped harmonic oscillator
2019
Abstract In this letter we show that it is not possible to set up a canonical quantization for the damped harmonic oscillator using the Bateman Lagrangian. In particular, we prove that no square integrable vacuum exists for the natural ladder operators of the system, and that the only vacua can be found as distributions. This implies that the procedure proposed by some authors is only formally correct, and requires a much deeper analysis to be made rigorous.

Complementarity between human capital and public infrastructure in industrial comparative advantage
2021
The article examines the role of public capital as an infrastructure service in the acquisition of industrial comparative advantages. To achieve this in this framework, we develop a theoretical model highlighting the complementarity between public and human capital as a mechanism of industrial development, and test this idea using sectoral panel data from 1999 to 2014 across 35 advanced and less advanced countries. Our results show that the sustainable acquisition of a comparative advantage in the production of industrial goods can only be guaranteed by accumulating public capital and human capital. It shows that public infrastructure can only generate industrialization when it is made avai…
A new questionnaire specifically designed for patients affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
2006
Summary The aim of this study was to develop a specific and valid questionnaire for Italian COPD patients, living on the north or the south of Italy—which are two culturally distinct areas. The project consisted in three steps: (1) initial item set generation to identify items relevant to both genders, all ages and both regions; (2) item reduction including tests of regional specificity; (3) tests of internal validity using item-response theory using Rasch one-parameter modelling. Ninty-six COPD patients (mean aged 69 yr; 78 Male) completed the original set of 124 items of the Italian Health Status Questionnaire (IHSQ). Item reduction was carried out using an established standardised approa…
