Parallel Computing for the study of the focusing Davey-Stewartson II equation in semiclassical limit

2012

The asymptotic description of the semiclassical limit of nonlinear Schrödinger equations is a major challenge with so far only scattered results in 1 + 1 dimensions. In this limit, solutions to the NLS equations can have zones of rapid modulated oscillations or blow up. We numerically study in this work the Davey-Stewartson system, a 2 + 1 dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a nonlocal term, by using parallel computing. This leads to the first results on the semiclassical limit for the Davey-Stewartson equations.

A reexamination of voltage distortion for classical carrier-based vs B-Spline modulation of three-phase Voltage Sources Inverters

2015

Voltage waveform improvement has been the object of several investigations for many years and a manifold of different solutions have been proposed to reduce the harmonic content in Voltage Source Inverters (VSI) power application. In many cases this improvements have been obtained by modifying the reference voltage modulating signal. The recent introduction of cardinal B-spline functions, used as carrier signals, has given rise to a new modulation technique whose main characteristic is a lower value of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). After the discussion on the B-Spline modulation principle and on its computational effort, a performance comparisons is carried out by means of Total Harm…

Emerging Therapies in Immune Thrombocytopenia

2021

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare autoimmune disorder caused by peripheral platelet destruction and inappropriate bone marrow production. The management of ITP is based on the utilization of steroids, intravenous immunoglobulins, rituximab, thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs), immunosuppressants and splenectomy. Recent advances in the understanding of its pathogenesis have opened new fields of therapeutic interventions. The phagocytosis of platelets by splenic macrophages could be inhibited by spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) or Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors. The clearance of antiplatelet antibodies could be accelerated by blocking the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), while n…

Human Nature and Economic Institutions Instinct Psychology, Behaviorism and the Development of American Institutionalism

2003

This paper explores the evolution of the psychological foundation of institutional economics between the early XXc and the 1940s. The first part deals with the rise and fall of instinct psychology. Inspired by Veblen's taxonomy of instinctive behavior, several American economists attempted to build a viable alternative to psychological hedonism of neoclassical economics then only at its infancy. In this debate we show how instinct theory came to be applied to the field now as industrial psychology. The second part discusses some of the reasons why this methodological approach began to lose momentum among leading American institutionalists. In this section we also present the emergence of be…

Generalized Virasoro anomaly and stress tensor for dilaton coupled theories

2003

We derive the anomalous transformation law of the quantum stress tensor for a 2D massless scalar field coupled to an external dilaton. This provides a generalization of the Virasoro anomaly which turns out to be consistent with the trace anomaly. We apply it together with the equivalence principle to compute the expectation values of the covariant quantum stress tensor on a curved background. Finally we briefly illustrate how to evaluate vacuum polarization and Hawking radiation effects from these results.

Rough Sets and Vague Sets

2007

The subject-matter of the consideration touches the problem of vagueness. The notion of the rough set, originated by Zdzislaw Pawlak, was constructed under the influence of vague information and methods of shaping systems of notions leading to conceptualization and representation of vague knowledge, so also systems of their scopes as some vague sets. This paper outlines some direction of searching for a solution to this problem. In the paper, in connection to the notion of the rough set, the notion of a vague set is introduced. Some operations on these sets and their properties are discussed. The considerations intend to take into account a classical approach to reasoning, based on vague pr…

A Mechanistic Reading of Quantum Laser Theory

2015

Quantum laser theory proceeds in a way that seems at variance with the mechanistic model of explanation. First, as is typical for a complex systems theory, the detailed behavior of the component parts plays a surprisingly subordinate role. In particular, the so-called “enslaving principle” seems to defy a mechanistic reading. Moreover, being quantum objects, the “parts” of a laser are neither located in space nor describable as separate entities. I want to show that, despite these apparent obstacles, quantum laser theory constitutes a good example of a mechanistic explanation in a quantum physical setting, provided that one broadens the notion of mechanism. One may feel that such adjustment…

Estimation of Nucleation Barriers from Simulations of Crystal Nuclei Surrounded by Fluid in Equilibrium

2016

Nucleation rates for homogeneous nucleation are commonly estimated in terms of an Arrhenius law involving the nucleation barrier, written in terms of a competition of the contribution in surface free energy of the nucleus and the free energy gain proportional to the nucleus volume. For crystal nuclei this “classical nucleation theory” is hampered by the problem that the nucleus in general is non spherical, since the interfacial excess free energy depends on the orientation of the interface relative to the crystal axes. This problem can be avoided by analyzing the equilibrium of a crystal nucleus surrounded by fluid in a small simulation box in thermal equilibrium. Estimating the fluid press…

On the propagation of a perturbation in an anharmonic system

2007

We give a not trivial upper bound on the velocity of disturbances in an infinitely extended anharmonic system at thermal equilibrium. The proof is achieved by combining a control on the non equilibrium dynamics with an explicit use of the state invariance with respect to the time evolution.

Coexistence of active Brownian disks: van der Waals theory and analytical results

2020

At thermal equilibrium, intensive quantities like temperature and pressure have to be uniform throughout the system, restricting inhomogeneous systems composed of different phases. The paradigmatic example is the coexistence of vapor and liquid, a state that can also be observed for active Brownian particles steadily driven away from equilibrium. Recently, a strategy has been proposed that allows to predict phase equilibria of active particles [Solon et al., Phys. Rev. E 97, 020602(R) (2018)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.97.020602]. Here we elaborate on this strategy and formulate it in the framework of a van der Waals theory for active disks. For a given equation of state, we derive the effecti…
