The Complement System: Activation and Control
1985
One of the hallmarks of immunology has been analysis and characterization of the C system in biological fluids. It is composed of 11 proteins of the “classical” pathway:1 C1q, C1r, C1s, C4, C2, C3, C5, C6, C7, C8, and C9. There are three proteins of the “alternative” pathway (IUIS-WHO Nomenclature Committee 1981) B, D, and P. Finally, there are four control proteins: C1 inhibitor (Cl¯ INH) and C4b binding protein (C4b-bp) for the classical pathway, I (C3b inactivator or C3b INA) and H (β1 or C3b INA accelerator) for the alternative pathway, and anaphylatoxin inactivator. Due to the dramatic advances in protein chemistry, these 19 distinct serum proteins have been highly purified and charact…
Immune Thrombocytopenia: Recent Advances in Pathogenesis and Treatments
2021
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare autoimmune disease due to both a peripheral destruction of platelets and an inappropriate bone marrow production. Although the primary triggering factors of ITP remain unknown, a loss of immune tolerance—mostly represented by a regulatory T-cell defect—allows T follicular helper cells to stimulate autoreactive splenic B cells that differentiate into antiplatelet antibody-producing plasma cells. Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa is the main target of antiplatelet antibodies leading to platelet phagocytosis by splenic macrophages, through interactions with Fc gamma receptors (FcγRs) and complement receptors. This allows macrophages to activate autoreactive T cells …
Los poetas ciegos y la ceguera en la poesía árabe: algunos casos destacados
2013
This paper deals with the verses of some relevant and famous blind Arab classical poets that talked about their blindness like the cases of al-A‛¿à, Ba¿¿ār ibn Burd and Abū-l-ɈAlā¿ al-Ma‛arrī among others. The study shows how each one of them faced his disability and the influence that their blindness had on their poetic production. This paper contains also the translation from the Arabic and tha analysis of the verses inspired by blindness to some seeing poets of Granada and the moderm Arabic poetry. El artículo se ocupa de los versos de algunos poetas árabes ciegos que se han hecho famosos en la literatura árabe clásica y que nos hablan de la ceguera como es el caso de al-A‛ à, Ba ār ibn …
A microcomputer system for controlling classical conditioning experiments
1994
A microcomputer-based laboratory system for controlling stimulus presentations and data acquisition in classical conditioning experiments is described. The system comprises an Intel 386/486-based microcomputer and a commercially obtained low-cost counter/timer board with input/output lines for stimulus timing and external device control. A simple, yet versatile custom-designed structured programming language is provided for performing an unlimited number of stimulus configurations and their sequences. In electrophysiological studies, the system can be flexibly connected to computer-controlled signal conditioning systems for the amplification and filtering of multiunit and evoked field poten…
Klasiskie retorikas līdzekļi iedarbīgā mūsdienu publiskā runā
2015
2015
his paper explores the problem of virtue, understood as a mental disposition and its impact on the existence of human subject. The concepts of virtues developed by philosophers over the different eras are now the inspiration for psychology, mostly positive psychology. The aim of this analysis is to verify the hypothesis of a relationship between the possession of specific virtues and a sense of the quality of life. The research method is based on an analysis of the literature. The research material consists of the latest publications of leading psychologists, experts in the field of positive psychology, Polish and foreign, and an extensive literature in the field of philosophy. Based on the…
Accurately evaluating Young’s modulus of polymers through nanoindentations: a phenomenological correction factor to the Oliver and Pharr procedure
2006
The Oliver and Pharr [J. Mater. Res. 7, 1564 (1992)] procedure is a widely used tool to analyze nanoindentation force curves obtained on metals or ceramics. Its application to polymers is, however, difficult, as Young’s moduli are commonly overestimated mainly because of viscoelastic effects and pileup. However, polymers spanning a large range of morphologies have been used in this work to introduce a phenomenological correction factor. It depends on indenter geometry: sets of calibration indentations have to be performed on some polymers with known elastic moduli to characterize each indenter.
Confinement-induced screening of hydrodynamic interactions and spinodal decomposition: Multiscale simulations of colloid-polymer mixtures
2012
Phase separation kinetics of a colloid-polymer mixture confined between two planar repulsive walls is studied by a multiscale simulation approach. Colloids and polymers are described by particles interacting with continuous potentials suitable for molecular-dynamics simulation, while hydrodynamic interactions mediated by solvent particles are accounted for by the multiparticle collision dynamics method. Varying the distance D between the walls and the character of the boundary conditions, the interplay of structure formation parallel and perpendicular to the walls is studied, and the effect of hydrodynamics on the growth of domain size ld(t) with time t is elucidated. Only for slip boundary…
Double-quantum nutations in a two-level spin system
1986
The transient oscillatory behavior of the nonlinear response of a two-level electron-spin system is experimentally investigated in a sample of glassy silica with ${E}_{1}^{\mathcal{'}}$ centers (S=(1/2)) at microwave frequency at T=4.2 K. The transient regime, excited by an intense step-modulated radiation tuned to double-quantum (DQ) resonance, is monitored by revealing the second-harmonic (SH) wave radiated by the spins undergoing DQ transitions. Time- and frequency-domain results show that the emitted SH wave has two components: the former, which vanishes at the DQ resonance, exhibits an overdamped transient regime, the latter consists of damped oscillations at a frequency which depends …
Polymer dynamics in time-dependent periodic potentials.
2008
Dynamics of a discrete polymer in time-dependent external potentials is studied with the master equation approach. We consider both stochastic and deterministic switching mechanisms for the potential states and give the essential equations for computing the stationary state properties of molecules with internal structure in time-dependent periodic potentials on a lattice. As an example, we consider standard and modified Rubinstein-Duke polymers and calculate their mean drift and effective diffusion coefficient in the two-state non-symmetric flashing potential and symmetric traveling potential. Rich non-linear behavior of these observables is found. By varying the polymer length, we find cur…
