Frictional drag between polymer bearing surfaces

2002

Some fundamental features of friction between two polymer bearing surfaces in relative sliding motion are investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. End-tethered and adsorbed polymers are considered under good and poor solvent conditions. The shear stress is measured while varying the solvent's viscosity, surface separation, degree of polymerization and grafting density. For all systems we observe shear thinning that is attributed to the orientation of the chains along the shear direction. This effect is particularly strong for brushes, for which the shear stress during the steady sliding state is mainly determined by the degree of overlap between the brushes.

Frictional Drag Mechanisms between Polymer-Bearing Surfaces

2001

The fundamental features of friction between two polymer-bearing surfaces in relative sliding motion are investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. Adsorbed and grafted polymers are considered in good and bad solutions. The solvent is not treated explicitly but indirectly in terms of a Langevin thermostat. In both systems, we observe shear thinning that is attributed to an orientation of the radius of gyration along the sliding direction. This effect is particularly strong for surfaces bearing polymer brushes. In this case, the shear stresses are mainly determined by the degree of the interpenetration of brushes.

Hydrodynamic mechanisms of spinodal decomposition in confined colloid-polymer mixtures: A multiparticle collision dynamics study

2013

A multiscale model for a colloid-polymer mixture is developed. The colloids are described as point particles interacting with each other and with the polymers with strongly repulsive potentials, while polymers interact with each other with a softer potential. The fluid in the suspension is taken into account by the multiparticle collision dynamics method (MPC). Considering a slit geometry where the suspension is confined between parallel repulsive walls, different possibilities for the hydrodynamic boundary conditions (b.c.) at the walls (slip versus stick) are treated. Quenching experiments are considered, where the system volume is suddenly reduced (keeping the density of the solvent flui…

C1q

2000

Publisher Summary This chapter provides information to the physical properties, structure, and function of C1q protein. This protein is made up of three individual polypeptide chains, A, B and C, which are synthesized as pre-molecules with 22, 25, and 28 amino acid leader sequences, respectively. C1q has a characteristic appearance under the electron microscope, with six globular heads connected by six collagen-like stalks forming a central fibril stem. Glucosylgalactosyl disaccharide units are linked to certain hydroxylysine residues in the collagen regions of all three chains. C1q has a critical function in host defense and clearance of immune complexes. Antibody-independent activation of…

From the Classical Boltzmann Equation to the Generalized Kinetic models of Biological Systems

2017

This paper deal with the classical Boltzmann Equation generalized to model populations in complex biological system. In particular, the populations refer to the cells of the immune system and to those of an aggressive host (cancer cells) in a human being. We will focus with the study of a spatially homogeneous continuous model, and derivation of the macroscopic model. The paper starts from a simple description of the classical Boltzmann equation and goes to the mathematical approach proposed to model the large systems of interacting entities focusing the competition between immune system and cancer cells.

Cuando la historia está presente: Argumentos a favor de la sociología histórica

2019

Sociology and history have maintained a discontinuous relationship and a permanent discussion. Classical sociology is intrinsically historical, but after the first theoretical synthesis the dialogue between both disciplines was extinguished and it has often been necessary to defend the need for the historical view in sociology from the margins of the dominant paradigm. However, as a specialty or subdiscipline, historical sociology has consolidated its own academic space and a strong theoretical, methodological and conceptual body. In Spain this process of institutionalization has not yet success. In this article we expose a few arguments in defense of historical sociology, both theoretical …

Metodi digitali per l'insegnamento classico e umanistico

2020

Generalized heat equation and transitions between different heat-transport regimes in narrow stripes

2019

Abstract In the framework of weakly nonlocal thermodynamic theory, in this paper we derive a nonlocal and nonlinear heat-transport equation beyond the Fourier law by means of thermodynamic considerations in agreement with the second law. The obtained equation describes the transitions among different heat-transport regimes. The stability of the solution of that equation is also analyzed in a special case.

Geneza Case Method i jej wpływ na kształt amerykańskiej filozofii prawa

2018
