The unspoken pressure of tradition : East Asian classical musicians in western classical music
2013
Itäaasialaisia klassisia muusikoita käsittelevät artikkelit ovat olleet yleisiä eurooppalaisissa klassisen musiikin lehdissä siitä lähtien kun itäaasialaiset alkoivat yhä suuremmassa määrin voittaa kansainvälisiä musiikkikilpailuita ja luoda kansainvälistä uraa 1900-luvun viimeisinä vuosikymmeninä. Läntinen taidemusiikki on kansainvälistymässä aikana, jolloin pelot klassisen musiikin kuolemasta ovat myös päässeet otsikoihin Euroopassa. Itäaasialaiset muusikot työskentelevät kompleksisella kulttuurien kentällä, jossa heidän muusikkoutensa on jatkuvasti arvostelun alaisena. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus oli saada selville, miten itäaasialaiset klassiset muusikot ja heidän kulttuurinen identitee…
“Natural wages dynamics in a Ricardian growth model”
2006
Ricardian growth models are generally built on the assumption of a constant natural wage. Such an assumption conceals the fact that classical economists were aware that in growing economies workers' normal pattern of consumption steadily rise both in terms of quantity and quality. In the first part of the chapter we gather some classical hints on the relationship between economic growth and natural wages in order to provide a rational reconstruction of the classical point of view on natural wage dynamics. In the second part of the chapter we propose a formal analysis of the dynamics of a Ricardian model with endogenous natural wage
A "laboratory" open air in the urban landscape of Palermo
2012
The study intends to make new contributions to knowledge of a interesting "laboratory" in the open air in the urban landscape of Palermo, a cultural and scientific heritage in which architecture, art and decoration coexist in an experiment of collective synergies. The Botanical Garden C enter, with its ten acres of land appears, still, a fervent creative process between artifice and nature, the expression of a specific historical and cultural climate in which expectations converged of a intellectual, scientific and institutional fervor. The academic institution, founded in 1789 with the intention of cultivating useful plants to the arts, crafts and medicine, contributed to the spread of tro…
Stick around: Cell–Cell Adhesion Molecules during Neocortical Development
2021
The neocortex is an exquisitely organized structure achieved through complex cellular processes from the generation of neural cells to their integration into cortical circuits after complex migration processes. During this long journey, neural cells need to establish and release adhesive interactions through cell surface receptors known as cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). Several types of CAMs have been described regulating different aspects of neurodevelopment. Whereas some of them mediate interactions with the extracellular matrix, others allow contact with additional cells. In this review, we will focus on the role of two important families of cell–cell adhesion molecules (C-CAMs), classi…
On a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for nucleons in one space dimension
2021
We study a 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation appearing in the description of a particle inside an atomic nucleus. For various nonlinearities, the ground states are discussed and given in explicit form. Their stability is studied numerically via the time evolution of perturbed ground states. In the time evolution of general localized initial data, they are shown to appear in the long time behaviour of certain cases.
Antīkās reminiscences latīņu okazionālajā dzejā Rīgā
2019
Līdz ar protestantu reformāciju 16. gadsimta pirmajā pusē arī Livonijā sāka ienākt Eiropas humānisma strāvojumi, kas mijiedarbībā ar vēsturiskiem un reliģiskiem notikumiem aktivizēja intelektuālo dzīvi un radīja labvēlīgu vidi literatūras attīstībai: dzejnieki humānisti Rīgā sāka sacerēt dzejas darbus latīņu valodā, kuru vidū ievērojama vieta ir 17. gadsimtā radītajai okazionālajai dzejai. Rakstā „Antīkās reminiscences latīņu okazionālajā dzejā Rīgā” aplūkota 17. gadsimtā Rīgā sacerētā kāzu (epithalamium, hymenaeus, carmen nuptialis, u. c.) un piemiņas dzeja (epicedium, epitaphium, carmen funebris, carmen lugubris) pievēršot uzmanību tajā ietverto antīko sižetu un tēlu poētikai. Rakstā īsi …
Recovering quantum correlations in classical environments without backaction: observation and interpretation
2014
Quantum correlations (entanglement, discord, nonlo-cality) present in a composite quantum system are essential resources for quantum information processing [1, 2]. However, the exploitation of these quantum resources is jeopardized by the detrimental effects of the environment surrounding the quantum system. For instance under Markovian noise, they decay asymptotically or disappear at a finite time [3, 4]. This drawback leads one to look for conditions where quantum correlations can be recovered during the evolution. To this aim non-Markovian noise, arising from strong couplings or structured environments, has been shown to be fundamental because of its memory effects. In fact, in the case …
Selective breeding for endurance running capacity affects cognitive but not motor learning in rats
2012
The ability to utilize oxygen has been shown to affect a wide variety of physiological factors often considered beneficial for survival. As the ability to learn can be seen as one of the core factors of survival in mammals, we studied whether selective breeding for endurance running, an indication of aerobic capacity, also has an effect on learning. Rats selectively bred over 23 generations for their ability to perform forced treadmill running were trained in an appetitively motivated discrimination-reversal classical conditioning task, an alternating T-maze task followed by a rule change (from a shift-win to stay-win rule) and motor learning task. In the discrimination-reversal and T-maze …
