Pharmacogenomics of Cameroonian traditional herbal medicine for cancer therapy
2011
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance A socio-economic burden associated with cancers is reported in Africa. Ethnopharmacological usages such as immune and skin disorders, inflammatory, and others chould be considered when selecting plants used to treat cancer, since these reflect disease states bearing relevance to cancer or a cancer symptoms. Materials and methods Documented compounds of Cameroonian medicinal plants were used as keywords in the National Cancer Institute (NCI) database to establish a library of cytotoxic compounds. Cellular and pharmacogenomic profiling was then performed for the 10 most cytotoxic natural products. By COMPARE and hierarchical cluster analyses, candidate …
Dog sperm head morphometry: its diversity and evolution
2017
Dogs have been under strong artificial selection as a consequence of their relationship with man. Differences between breeds are evident that could be reflected in seminal characteristics. The present study was to evaluate differences in sperm head morphometry between seven well-defined breeds of dog: the British Bulldog, Chihuahua, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Spanish Mastiff, Staffordshire Terrier, and Valencian Rat Hunting dog. Semen samples were obtained by masturbation and smears stained with Diff-Quik. Morphometric analysis (CASA-Morph) produced four size and four shape parameters. Length, Ellipticity, and Elongation showed higher differences between breeds. MANOVA revealed di…
Doxorubicin induces wide-spread transcriptional changes in the myocardium of hearts distinguishing between mice with preserved and impaired cardiac f…
2021
Abstract Aims Doxorubicin (DOX) is an important drug for the treatment of various tumor entities. However, the occurrence of heart failure limits its application. This study investigated differential gene expression profiles in the left and right ventricles of DOX treated mice with either preserved or impaired myocardial function. We provide new mechanistic insights into the pathophysiology of DOX-induced heart failure and have discovered pathways that counteract DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. Main methods We used in total 48 male mice and applied a chronic low dose DOX administration (5 mg/kg per injection, in total 20 mg/kg over 4 weeks) to induce heart failure. Echocardiographic parameters …
A natural-like synthetic small molecule impairs bcr-abl signaling cascades and induces megakaryocyte differentiation in erythroleukemia cells
2013
Over the past years, we synthesized a series of new molecules that are hybrids of spirocyclic ketones as complexity-bearing cores with bi- and ter-phenyls as privileged fragments. Some of these newly-shaped small molecules showed antiproliferative, pro-apoptotic and differentiating activity in leukemia cell lines. In the present study, to investigate more in depth the mechanisms of action of these molecules, the protein expression profiles of K562 cells treated with or without the compounds IND_S1, MEL_T1, IND_S7 and MEL_S3 were analyzed using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled with mass spectrometry. Proteome comparisons revealed several differentially expressed proteins, mainly r…
Expression profiling of prospero in the Drosophila larval chemosensory organ: Between growth and outgrowth
2010
AbstractBackgroundThe antenno-maxilary complex (AMC) forms the chemosensory system of theDrosophilalarva and is involved in gustatory and olfactory perception. We have previously shown that a mutant allele of the homeodomain transcription factor Prospero (prosVoila1,V1), presents several developmental defects including abnormal growth and altered taste responses. In addition, many neural tracts connecting the AMC to the central nervous system (CNS) were affected. Our earlier reports on larval AMC did not argue in favour of a role ofprosin cell fate decision, but strongly suggested thatproscould be involved in the control of other aspect of neuronal development. In order to identify these fu…
Improving the accuracy of rainfall prediction using a regionalization approach and neural networks
2018
Spatial and temporal analysis of precipitation patterns has become an intense research topic in contemporary climatology. Increasing the accuracy of precipitation prediction can have valuable results for decision-makers in a specific region. Hence, studies about precipitation prediction on a regional scale are of great importance. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been widely used in climatological applications to predict different meteorological parameters. In this study, a method is presented to increase the accuracy of neural networks in precipitation prediction in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province in Iran. For this purpose, monthly precipitation data recorded at 42 rain gauges duri…
Vengono, inoltre, analizzate…
Areas of research and clinical approaches to the study of liver abscess
2016
AIM To analyze the research activity on liver abscess (LA) and identify the main topic clusters in the area. METHODS We identified all documents using the medical subject heading "LA" indexed in the MEDLINE database between 2001 and 2015. We performed a descriptive bibliometric analysis, characterizing the evolution of scientific activity, the publication types of the documents, the document categories of clinical interest (case reports, clinical trials, evaluation studies, meta-analysis, observational studies, practice guidelines and validation studies) and the geographic distribution of the research. We also carried out an analysis of networks and research clusters in order to identify th…
Maternal Oct-4 is a potential key regulator of the developmental competence of mouse oocytes
2008
Abstract Background The maternal contribution of transcripts and proteins supplied to the zygote is crucial for the progression from a gametic to an embryonic control of preimplantation development. Here we compared the transcriptional profiles of two types of mouse MII oocytes, one which is developmentally competent (MIISN oocyte), the other that ceases development at the 2-cell stage (MIINSN oocyte), with the aim of identifying genes and gene expression networks whose misregulated expression would contribute to a reduced developmental competence. Results We report that: 1) the transcription factor Oct-4 is absent in MIINSN oocytes, accounting for 2) the down-regulation of Stella, a matern…
Stability-Based Model Selection for High Throughput Genomic Data: An Algorithmic Paradigm
2012
Clustering is one of the most well known activities in scien- tific investigation and the object of research in many disciplines, ranging from Statistics to Computer Science. In this beautiful area, one of the most difficult challenges is the model selection problem, i.e., the identifi- cation of the correct number of clusters in a dataset. In the last decade, a few novel techniques for model selection, representing a sharp departure from previous ones in statistics, have been proposed and gained promi- nence for microarray data analysis. Among those, the stability-based methods are the most robust and best performing in terms of predic- tion, but the slowest in terms of time. Unfortunately…
