Acute toxicity of experimental fertilizers made of blood meal, spent coffee ground and biomass ash

Abstract The study presents the results of research on the acute toxicity of a fertilizer formulas made of spent coffee ground (SCG) with addition of ash from low-temperature combustion of biomass or ash with an admixture of magnesium sulphate and blood meal. The experimental fertilizer formulas included also rape oil used as a plasticizer for controlling the nutrients release from the fertiliser. Mustard (Sinapis alba L.), oats (Avena sativa sp. AbstractMicrobial communities are ubiquitous in both natural and artificial environments. However, microbial diversity is usually reduced under strong selection pressures, such as those present in habitats rich in recalcitrant or toxic compounds displaying antimicrobial properties. Caffeine is a natural alkaloid present in coffee, tea and soft drinks with well-known antibacterial properties. Here we present the first systematic analysis of coffee machine-associated bacteria. Coffee increases state anxiety in males but not in females.

Coffee, reproducing the conditions under which caffeine is normally ingested, containing 3, 75, 150 or 300 mg of caffeine was given to healthy male and female volunteers. 25-30 min after drinking the beverage, they completed the Spanish version of the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI). The beverage increased state anxiety, in a dose-dependent manner, in males but not in females. This could be due to a lesser sensitivity of females to coffee.

Orientation of charged clay nanotubes in evaporating droplet meniscus.

During drying, an aqueous suspension of strongly charged halloysite clay nanotubes concentrates at the edge of the droplet ("coffee-ring" effect) which provides alignment of the tubes along the liquid-substrate contact line. First, the surface charge of the nanotubes was enhanced by polyanion adsorption inside of the lumen to compensate for the internal positive charges. This increased the magnitude of the ξ-potential of the tubes from -36 to -81mV and stabilized the colloids. Then, colloidal halloysite was dropped onto the substrate, dried at 65°C and after a concentration of ~0.05mgmL-1 was reached, the alignment of nanotubes occurred starting from the droplet edges. …

A simple, sensitive and accurate method for the analysis of furan in roasted coffee has been used based on headspace-solid-phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The extraction was performed using 75-microm carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane fiber. Ionic strength, extraction time and temperature, and desorption time were assessed as the most important parameters affecting the HS-SPME procedure and d(4)-furan was used as the internal standard. Effect of EDTA on divalent metal adsorption onto grape stalk and exhausted coffee wastes

In the present work, two industrial vegetable wastes, grape stalk, coming from a wine producer, and exhausted coffee, coming from a soluble coffee manufacturer, have been investigated for the removal of Cu(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions in presence and in absence of the strongly complexing agent EDTA. Effects of pH and metal-EDTA molar ratio, kinetics as a function of sorbent concentration, and sorption equilibrium for both metals onto both sorbents were evaluated in batch experiments.
