Designing and analyzing collaboration in a scripted game for vocational education
2008
This study attempts to combine the technological possibilities of 3D-game environments and collaborative learning scripts. The study is a design experiment (N=64) with multiple data collection and analysis (quantitative and qualitative) methods. The aims were twofold: The aim was to develop a game environment to simulate issues of work safety in a vocational context and to answer the following questions on the basis of an empirical study: (1) What kind of activities did the scripted game environment generate among the players? (2) How did the least and the most successful groups differ in this respect despite the same scripted game environment? Findings indicated that scripted game environm…
Communities in Technology-Enhanced Environments for Learning
2009
The contemporary society addresses complex, interrelated, and interactive global situations to be faced by its citizens. Instead of pursuing solitary actions, this post-modern turn requires its actors to develop capacities to resituate their activities in collective unities and to successfully communicate their actions within these multiple local and global communities. Also in education, the concept of community continues to possess a positive image and the optimistic premises of how communication technologies may enable communities to grow have been widely discussed. For example, in higher education, educational practices (e.g. Virtual University) are more often fixed around Web-based col…
To be or not to be: Collaborative Governance and The Case of Continuous Master Planning in Lahti
2020
The benefits of collaborative actions between different stakeholders has been recognized broadly and has been admitted as one of the key factors in regional development. However, the research has so far focused on examining cases retrospectively, leaving a gap in looking into something on-going and uncertain, as well as it has been common to consider regional development through abstracts concepts. Therefore, there exists less information on the practical implementation of the theories and policies within regions. Additionally, it is important to take into consideration the ever-growing trend of cross-sectoral collaboration - however not only in public-private interface, but also involving …
Estrategias basadas en análisis de redes sociales para optimizar el clima de aprendizaje en la universidad
2021
The aim of this study was to detect leaders among a group of university students based on their centrality scores and, from these scores, to distribute roles to help enhance learning climate. We understood that learning climate improved when the construction of networked knowledge was stimulated from the perspective of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning. We conducted the educational experiment in a virtual environment. An online discussion forum was set up in a loo- sely structured format, and the students’ centrality scores were calculated from the social network they generated in the forum. Our findings show that student connectivity increased significantly and that several leaders…
Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation and User Scheduling for Collaborative Mobile Clouds With Hybrid Receivers
2016
In this paper, we study the resource allocation and user scheduling algorithm for minimizing the energy cost of data transmission in the context of OFDMA collaborative mobile cloud (CMC) with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) receivers. The CMC, which consists of several collaborating MTs offers one potential solution for downlink con- tent distribution and for the energy consumption reduction at the terminal side. Meanwhile, as RF signal can carry both informa- tion and energy simultaneously, the induced SWIPT has gained much attention for energy efficiency design of mobile nodes. Previous work on the design of CMC system mainly focused on the cloud formulation o…
Community Relationships and the Practice of Public Relations in Higher Education
2007
In 2004 the Finnish Universities Act was amended to include a third strand as an essential part of research and teaching. This paper focuses on relationship building to explore whether this approach would be helpful in developing university–community relationships and educational public relations. By means of a dialogic community relations model the paper suggests that different forms of social interaction and communication strategies are needed in relationship‐building, maintenance and enhancement; but, when aiming at collaborative community relationships, priority should be given to the development of the two dialogic strategies.
A job resources-based intervention to boost work engagement and team innovativeness during organizational restructuring
2018
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of a job resources-based intervention aimed at proactively increasing work engagement and team innovativeness during organizational restructuring using a person-centered approach. Design/methodology/approach The intervention was conducted in two organizations: two departments served as participants (n=82) and two as controls (n=52). The aim was to first identify sub-groups of employees with different developmental patterns of work engagement, and then to determine whether these sub-groups benefited differently from the intervention with respect to team innovativeness and work engagement. Findings Latent profile analysis …
Percepción del alumnado sobre evaluación formativa y compartida: conectando dos universidades a través de la Blogosfera
2017
The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in physical education students’ perception on an educational innovation based on formative and peer assessment through the blogosphere. The sample was made up of 253 students from two Spanish universities. Data was collected using a self-reported questionnaire and t tests were employed in order to find differences among students’ groups. Results show significant differences in almost all of the items on which the students were questioned. Basque students were more satisfied with the assessment tool used than the Valencian students. Students found the blogosphere more active, meaningful, functional and motivating and that it made for collabor…
The Protection of the Weaker Parties in the Platform Economy
2018
Known by many names – platform, sharing, peer-to-peer (p2p), collaborative economy, and so on - entirely new business models have emerged in recent years, whereby online platforms use digital technologies to connect distinct groups of users in order to facilitate transactions for the exchange of assets and services. This dramatic shift in business organisation and market structure has opened an intense debate on the persisting need for those regulatory measures that typically protect the weaker party in bilateral business-to-consumer transactions. Widespread calls for a more “levelled playing field” makes a strong argument for reconsidering the scope of regulation and delegating regulatory …
