Reformer i UH-sektoren. Det muliges kunst

2019

Public sector reform tends to harbour competing ambitions, problems and solutions. Reforms in higher education policy are no exception. They are often multi-faceted phenomena, partly because higher education institutions are complex organizations with wide-ranging expectations and demands from a variety of stakeholders. This chapter argues that higher education institutions cannot ‘organize away’ competing objectives, but rather aim to create organizational designs which help complex institutions to live with complex reforms. The chapter examines the ‘Structural Reform’ in Norwegian higher education and how higher education institutions responded. Launched in April 2015, it resulted in a la…

2023

The essay is part of a book that aims to rediscover and enhance Pierre Bourdieu's contribution to the legal philosophy. Clelia Bartoli's paper takes up the French sociologist's theory of the State outlined during courses held at the College de France in 1989/1990 and 1990/1992. Bourdieu eschewed an intellectual fashion of his time that pushed historians, political scientists, lawyers and sociologists to examine the causes and reasons, evolutions and epilogues of revolutions, at the expense, however, of what is happening on the background: the dull, muffled and repetitive order of things. Bourdieu believed that permanence more than change, what is obvious more than what is eccentric, the ord…

Perspectives from Singapore junior college students : what makes them good and smart?

2015

In the 21st century, character education is regaining its importance. Some stud-ies have shown that academic excellence alone is insufficient for an individual to succeed. Character values such as resilience, determination, diligence are essential. On a macro level, character values such as empathy, integrity, respect are necessary for a gracious society. This research aims to answer the question of what platforms or programme in a school enables character development in the domains of ‘head’, ‘heart’ and ‘hands’. It seeks the answers from the per-spectives of the students of a Singapore junior college. The current and former students of the junior college were invited to complete an online…

Transition to adulthood and recession: a qualitative study

2016

While the transition to adulthood has been broadly examined, less is known about the impact of economic recession on the well-being and psychosocial functioning of young people. The present study used qualitative interviews with 12 college students to understand their experience. Consensual qualitative research was used to analyse data and develop core themes around young people’s experiences. Interviews focused on how young people perceived the impact of the economic recession on their social context and on emotional, behavioural, and interpersonal dimensions. Although students showed a proactive attitude in dealing with the crisis, findings highlighted a negative impact on psychological f…
