Field effect in the viscosity of magnetic colloids studied by multi-particle collision dynamics

2019

Abstract Colloidal solutions of magnetic nanoparticles are usually employed when the fluidity and magnetic properties are required at the same time, either in technical or biomedical applications. However, when the magnetic size of the nanoparticles is large enough (>12–15 nm) the colloid may form an equilibrium structure with or without the external magnetic field, which can significantly influence its rheology. Using multi-particle collision dynamics we study the internal structure and viscosity of the magnetic colloids at varying magnitudes of the externally applied field. We show a generalized structural behavior across all studied regimes and an appreciable increase of flow resistance …

Quantum dynamics of 16O in collision with ortho- and para-17O17O

2017

Abstract We report full quantum dynamical observables, such as integral and differential cross sections and rate constants, for the 16 O +  17 O 17 O reactive collision process. We particularly emphasize the effect coming from the nonzero nuclear spin of 17 O, leading to two nuclear spin isomers of 34 O 2 , ortho- and para- 34 O 2 which can be studied independently and behave differently. A comparison with the 16 O +  18 O 18 O collision is given. We find that processes involving 17 O 17 O are always faster than with 18 O 18 O.

Quantum Dynamics of the 17O + 32O2 Collision Process

2016

We report full quantum integral and differential cross sections and rate constants for the 17O + 32O2 reactive process. This constitutes the first quantum scattering study of the 17O16O16O system. We emphasize the comparison with the 18O + 32O2 collision in close connection to the mass-independent fractionation (hereafter referred to as MIF) puzzle for ozone in atmospheric chemistry. We find similar general trends in the cross sections and rate constants for both rare isotopes, but we note some singular behaviors peculiar to the use of 17O isotope, particularly at the lowest collision energies.

Quantum stereodynamics of the 18O+16O16O→16O18O+16O exchange reaction at low collision energy

2017

Abstract We present a quantum study of stereodynamics of the 18 O + 16 O 16 O ( v = 0 , j = 1 ) → 16 O 18 O ( v ′ = 0 , j ′ ) + 16 O exchange reaction at a collision energy E coll = 0.01 eV . Polarization moments of the reactants have been computed and stereodynamical portraits have been generated. The results show that the reactant preferred relative orientations are strongly dependent on the scattering angle and on the product rotational states.

The effect of rheological approximations in 3-D numerical simulations of subduction and collision

2018

Abstract Subduction and collision zones evolve differently from one another due to different rheological properties, different amounts of regional isostatic compensation, and the different mechanisms by which forces are applied to the convergent plates. The rheology of mantle and lithosphere is known to have the largest influence on the dynamics of subduction and continental collision. However, previous 3-D geodynamic models of subduction/collision processes have used various rheological approximations, making their results difficult to compare, since there is no clear understanding on the extent of these approximations on the dynamics. Here, we test the effect of rheological approximations…

P and S wave travel time tomography of the SE Asia-Australia collision zone

2019

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. The southeast (SE)Asia - Australia collision zone is one of the most tectonically active and seismogenic regions in the world. Here, we present new 3-D P- and S-wave velocity models of the crust and upper mantle by applying regional earthquake travel-time tomography to global catalogue data. We first re-locate earthquakes provided by the standard ISC-Reviewed and ISC-EHB catalogues using a non-linear oct-tree scheme. A machine learning algorithm that clusters earthquakes depending on their spatiotemporal density was then applied to significantly improve the consistency of travel-time picks. We used the Fast Marching Tomography software package to retrieve 3-D velocity a…

Nonlithostatic pressure during subduction and collision and the formation of (ultra)high-pressure rocks

2016

The mechanisms that result in the formation of high-pressure (HP) and ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) rocks are controversial. The usual interpretation assumes that pressure is close to lithostatic, petrological pressure estimates can be transferred to depth, and (U)HP rocks have been exhumed from great depth. An alternative explanation is that pressure can be larger than lithostatic, particularly in continental collision zones, and (U)HP rocks could thus have formed at shallower depths. To better understand the mechanical feasibility of these hypotheses, we performed thermomechanical numerical simulations of a typical subduction and collision scenario. If the subducting crust is laterally homogen…

Data synergy between leaf area index and clumping index Earth Observation products using photon recollision probability theory

2018

International audience; Clumping index (CI) is a measure of foliage aggregation relative to a random distribution of leaves in space. The CI can help with estimating fractions of sunlit and shaded leaves for a given leaf area index (LAI) value. Both the CI and LAI can be obtained from global Earth Observation data from sensors such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS). Here, the synergy between a MODIS-based CI and a MODIS LAI product is examined using the theory of spectral invariants, also referred to as photon recollision probability ('p-theory'), along with raw LAI-2000/2200 Plant Canopy Analyzer data from 75 sites distributed across a range of plant functional types.…
