Precisión diagnóstica del termómetro de distrés en neoplasias hematológicas

2016

Objective: The present study extends the previous investigation about validity and diagnostic accuracy of the DT for detecting psychosocial distress among Spanish cancer patients. The Distress Thermometer (DT) is a common screening tool, but other methods –such as Impact Thermometer (IT)- have recently been proposed with the aim of improving its diagnostic accuracy. In this paper, we investigated the emotional symptomatology captured by the DT, and the diagnostic accuracy of both the DT alone and combined with the IT, using two possible combination methods. Methods: A sample of 81 adult patients with hematologic cancer completed the DT, the Colored Complaint Scale (CCS), the IT and the Brie…

Simultaneous dissolution profiles of two drugs, sulfadiazine-trimethoprim and amitriptyline-perphenazine, in solid oral dosage forms by a FIA manifol…

2002

The simultaneous determination of two dissolution profiles with the aid of a Flow Injection Analysis assembly has been applied to: (a) sulfadiazine-trimethoprim in tablets and (b) amitriptyline-perphenazine in sugar coated pills. The selected combinations are drugs which have overlapping UV-vis spectra. The officially proposed procedure from the pharmacopoeias has been adapted for the FIA methodology and derivative spectrophotometry and zero crossing. Preliminary experiments on the suitability of the simultaneous determination of both drugs were performed. The empirical profiles were adjusted by regression analysis using different approaches. The 3-parameter plot method was finally selected…

Mitochondrial Toxicity in HAART: An Overview of In Vitro Evidence

2011

The combined antiretroviral therapeutic approach currently employed for the treatment of HIV infection, known as Higly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), has dramatically reduced AIDS-related morbidity and mortality. However, the adverse reactions associated with the long term use of this therapy have now become a major issue and researchers have focused on understanding the cellular mechanisms underlying these drug-induced detrimental effects which englobe a large list of different events including rash and hypersensibility reactions, hepatotoxicity, metabolic disturbances including lipodystrophy, and other metabolic syndrome-like disturbances such as hyperlactatemia, hyperlipedimia, i…

Multi or Single-Kinase Inhibitors to Counteract Drug Resistance in Cancer: What is New?

2023

The concept of protein kinase inhibition starts from the groundbreaking research on the role of these proteins in the regulation of fundamental processes, including proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, metabolism, and inflammation. Kinase genetic mutations, as well as overexpression and dysregulation, can contribute to the development of several diseases, including neoplasms, leading to relapses and resistance to standard drug chemotherapy [1-3].

Interferon-?? Alone versus Interferon-?? plus Ribavirin in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C Not Responding to Previous Interferon-?? Treatment

2000

Objective: To study the effects of monotherapy with leucocyte interferon-α (IFNα) versus IFNα + ribavirin in patients with chronic hepatitis C who were nonresponders to previous courses of recombinant or lymphoblastoid IFNα. Design and setting: This was a nonblind randomised study of outpatients at 3 centres in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Patients and participants: We recruited 72 patients (48 males, 24 females), mean age 48.8 ± 6.6 years (range 31 to 63 years), with biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis C, predominantly genotype lb. Interventions: 24 patients (group A) received IFNα 6MU 3 times weekly for 6 months, and 48 patients (group B) received IFNα 6MU 3 times weekly + ribavirin 1200 mg/day fo…

Amlodepine induced gingival enlargement - presentation of a clinical case series

2011

Objectives: Gingival enlargement as an adverse effects of drugs has been found to be long associated with the use of anticonvulsants; phenytoin, anti-hypertensives; calcium channel blockers and immunosuppressants; cyclosporine. Nifedepine was found to cause gingival overgrowth with an incidence ranging from 15-85%. However, Amlodepine a relatively newer agent of the same group which is being routinely and vastly prescribed either alone or as part of combination therapy to middle to older aged adults has also been found to exhibit this adverse effect with very few cases reported till date. The effect of the dose of amlodepine on the severity of gingival enlargement needs to be assessed. Stud…

Photoluminescence from silicon nanocrystals initiated by Auger recombination

2006

Abstract The mechanism of intense photoluminescence (PL) of silicon nanocrystals (nc-si), so interpreted as recombinative emission is reconsidered. Analysis of available theoretical and experimental data is presented to show that nc-si have an indirect band structure and, therefore, it is doubtful that electron–hole recombination is the only mechanism of intense emission. A model is proposed according to which a fraction of electrons reaches the second conduction sub-band by Auger recombination, a part of intense visible radiation being caused by direct electron transitions from the second conduction sub-band to the first one. Continuity equations are constructed in the first and the second…
