Lanthanide macrocyclic complexes: from molecules to materials and from materials to devices

2013

In the present review, we show how the chemistry of lanthanide macrocyclic complexes, which began almost 50 years ago in Russia, is still very active. Additionally to bisphthalocyanines complexes, triple-decker, but also quadruple- and quintuple-decker complexes have been synthesized via new chemical routes. The driving force for the development of this chemistry arises from the wide range of possible applications. Owing to their very high conductivity, compared to that of monophthalocyanines, LnPc2 and Ln2Pc3 complexes are used as molecular semiconductors in electronic devices. The radical nature of LnPc2 complexes makes them easily oxidized and reduced. This is the reason why they are pa…

A Simple Phosphine–Diolefin‐Promoted Copper‐Catalysed N‐Arylation of Pyrazoles with (Hetero)aromatic Bromides: The Case of Chloroarenes Revisited

2012

A molecularly defined new phosphine–diolefin cubane copper pre-catalyst used at 1.25 mol % under mild conditions promotes the coupling of pyrazoles to functionalised aryl and heteroaryl bromides, which hold a variety of functional groups. This versatile phosphorus-based system was thus successfully used, under identical conditions, for the coupling of a large scope of heteroaromatics to selectively produce pyridinyl- and pyrimidinyl-pyrazoles, as well as several novel furyl-, thienyl- and thiazolyl-substituted pyrazoles. The careful investigation of coupling with the analogous aryl and heteroaryl chlorides clearly indicated that for specifically activated chloroarenes a direct nucleophilic …

Etherification of Functionalized Phenols with Chloroheteroarenes at Low Palladium Loading: Theoretical Assessment of the Role of Triphosphane Ligands…

2011

The present study highlights the potential of robust tridentate ferrocenylphosphanes with controlled conformation as catalytic auxiliaries in CO bond formation reactions. Air-stable palladium triphosphane systems are efficient for selective heteroaryl ether synthesis by using as little as 0.2 mol% of catalyst. These findings represent an economically attractive and clean etherification of functionalized phenols, electron-rich, electron-poor and para-, meta- or ortho-substituted substrates, with heteroaryl chlorides, including pyridines, hydroxylated pyridine, pyrimidines and thiazole. The etherification tolerates very important functions in various positions, such as cyano, methoxy, amino, …

Fluorescent metal-based complexes as cancer probes.

2020

Abstract The ability to track drugs inside of cells and tumours has been highly valuable in cancer research and diagnosis. Metal complexes add attractive features to fluorescent drugs, such as targeting and specificity, solubility and uptake or photophysical properties. This review focuses on the latest fluorescent metal-based complexes, their cellular targets, photophysical properties and possible anticancer effects.

The synthesis and effect of fluorinated chalcone derivatives on nitric oxide production

2002

Abstract Dimethoxy- and trimethoxychalcone derivatives, with various patterns of fluorination, were synthesized and evaluated for their influence on nitric oxide production. Some of them, chalcones 1 , 5 , 7 , 10 , 11 and 17 , inhibited NO production with an IC 50 in the submicromolar range; 17 is especially noteworthy because of its potency (IC 50 30 nM). These effects were not the consequence of a direct inhibitory action on enzyme activity but the inhibition of enzyme expression.

Photoreactive Liquid Crystals in the Series of Dendritic and Cyclic Stilbenoid Compounds

2000

The dendrimers 1 and 2 and the areno-condensed annulenes 3 and 4 represent new mesogens for the generation of discotic mesophases. The stilbenoid building blocks of these compounds provide the molecular basis for interesting photochemical and photophysical effects like dimerisation, oligomerisation or the formation of charge carriers.

1H-, 13C-, and 15N-NMR and ESI-TOF+ MS studies of a supramolecular complex of silver(I) and a cholaphane

2003

A novel application of the mixed anhydride procedure for synthesising lithocholic acid piperazine diamide, an important intermediate in designing bile acid-based supramolecular host molecules, is reported. The synthesis of a thiophene-containing cholaphane with transition metal complexation ability and 1H-, 13C-, and 15N-NMR as well as ESI-TOF+ MS spectral characterisation of the ligand and its Ag(I) complex are included. The coordination of the Ag(I) ion as well as an ability of the cholaphane to recognise Ag(I) ion over alkali metal ions, especially potassium ion, is discussed. The possible medical applications are also presented.

From First Principles to the Burrows and Wheeler Transform and Beyond, via Combinatorial Optimization

2007

AbstractWe introduce a combinatorial optimization framework that naturally induces a class of optimal word permutations with respect to a suitably defined cost function taking into account various measures of relatedness between words. The Burrows and Wheeler transform (bwt) (cf. [M. Burrows, D. Wheeler, A block sorting lossless data compression algorithm, Technical Report 124, Digital Equipment Corporation, 1994]), and its analog for labelled trees (cf. [P. Ferragina, F. Luccio, G. Manzini, S. Muthukrishnan, Structuring labeled trees for optimal succinctness, and beyond, in: Proc. of the 45th Annual IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science, 2005, pp. 198–207]), are special cases i…

Exploring the biological, catalytic, and magnetic properties of transition metal coordination complexes incorporating pyrophosphate

2019

Abstract Polyphosphate anions are ubiquitous in nature, none more so than the diphosphate tetra-anion P2O74−, commonly referred to as pyrophosphate (PPi). The past decade has seen a rise in the number of pyrophosphate coordination complexes synthesized and characterized, and the areas of research interest expanded to include magnetic, medicinal, nutraceutical, catalytic and bioinorganic. The aim of the present review is to collect and organize the multidisciplinary information of the inorganic pyrophosphate system paying special attention to the following points: (i) the structural diversity of the PPi-containing metal complexes from discrete species to coordination polymers, which is due t…

Exponential Transients in Continuous-Time Symmetric Hopfield Nets

2001

We establish a fundamental result in the theory of continuous-time neural computation, by showing that so called continuous-time symmetric Hopfield nets, whose asymptotic convergence is always guaranteed by the existence of a Liapunov function may, in the worst case, possess a transient period that is exponential in the network size. The result stands in contrast to e.g. the use of such network models in combinatorial optimization applications. peerReviewed
