Tailoring a pair of pants

2021

Abstract We show how to deform the map Log : ( C ⁎ ) n → R n such that the image of the complex pair of pants P ∘ ⊂ ( C ⁎ ) n is the tropical hyperplane by showing an (ambient) isotopy between P ∘ ⊂ ( C ⁎ ) n and a natural polyhedral subcomplex of the product of the two skeleta S × Σ ⊂ A × C of the amoeba A and the coamoeba C of P ∘ . This lays the groundwork for having the discriminant to be of codimension 2 in topological Strominger-Yau-Zaslow torus fibrations.

A note on Serrin's overdetermined problem

2014

We consider the solution of the torsion problem $$−Δu = N \quad\mathrm{in}\quad Ω,\quad u = 0\quad\mathrm{on}\quad ∂Ω,$$ where Ω is a bounded domain in RN. ¶ Serrin's celebrated symmetry theorem states that, if the normal derivative uν is constant on ∂Ω, then Ω must be a ball. In [6], it has been conjectured that Serrin's theorem may be obtained by stability in the following way: first, for the solution u of the torsion problem prove the estimate $$r_e − r_i ≤ C_t\Bigl(\max_{\Gamma_t} u-\min_{\Gamma_t} u\Bigr)$$ for some constant Ct depending on t, where re and ri are the radii of an annulus containing ∂Ω and Γt is a surface parallel to ∂Ω at distance t and sufficiently close to ∂Ω secondly…

Bochner-Riesz means of functions in weak-L p

1993

The Bochner-Riesz means of order delta greater-than-or-equal-to 0 for suitable test functions on R(N) are defined via the Fourier transform by (S(R)(delta)f)(xi) = (1 - \xi\2/R2)+(delta)f(xi). We show that the means of the critical index delta = N/P - N + 1/2, 1 + infinity, to f(x) in norm and for almost every x in R(N). We also observe that the means of the function absolute value of x-N/p, which belongs to L(p,infinity) (R(N)) but not to the closure of test functions, converge for no x

Vector-valued Hardy inequalities and B-convexity

2000

Inequalities of the form $$\sum\nolimits_{k = 0}^\infty {|\hat f(m_k )|/(k + 1) \leqslant C||f||_1 } $$ for allf∈H 1, where {m k } are special subsequences of natural numbers, are investigated in the vector-valued setting. It is proved that Hardy's inequality and the generalized Hardy inequality are equivalent for vector valued Hardy spaces defined in terms ff atoms and that they actually characterizeB-convexity. It is also shown that for 1<q<∞ and 0<α<∞ the spaceX=H(1,q,γa) consisting of analytic functions on the unit disc such that $$\int_0^1 {(1 - r)^{q\alpha - 1} M_1^q (f,r) dr< \infty } $$ satisfies the previous inequality for vector valued functions inH 1 (X), defined as the space ofX…

Cardinal Invariants for the $G_\delta$ topology

2017

We prove upper bounds for the spread, the Lindel\"of number and the weak Lindel\"of number of the $G_\delta$-topology on a topological space and apply a few of our bounds to give a short proof to a recent result of Juh\'asz and van Mill regarding the cardinality of a $\sigma$-countably tight homogeneous compactum.

Algorithms for permutability in finite groups

2013

In this paper we describe some algorithms to identify permutable and Sylow-permutable subgroups of finite groups, Dedekind and Iwasawa finite groups, and finite T-groups (groups in which normality is transitive), PT-groups (groups in which permutability is transitive), and PST-groups (groups in which Sylow permutability is transitive). These algorithms have been implemented in a package for the computer algebra system GAP.

On invariant measures of finite affine type tilings

2006

In this paper, we consider tilings of the hyperbolic 2-space, built with a finite number of polygonal tiles, up to affine transformation. To such a tiling T, we associate a space of tilings: the continuous hull Omega(T) on which the affine group acts. This space Omega(T) inherits a solenoid structure whose leaves correspond to the orbits of the affine group. First we prove the finite harmonic measures of this laminated space correspond to finite invariant measures for the affine group action. Then we give a complete combinatorial description of these finite invariant measures. Finally we give examples with an arbitrary number of ergodic invariant probability measures.

Curve packing and modulus estimates

2018

A family of planar curves is called a Moser family if it contains an isometric copy of every rectifiable curve in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ of length one. The classical "worm problem" of L. Moser from 1966 asks for the least area covered by the curves in any Moser family. In 1979, J. M. Marstrand proved that the answer is not zero: the union of curves in a Moser family has always area at least $c$ for some small absolute constant $c > 0$. We strengthen Marstrand's result by showing that for $p > 3$, the $p$-modulus of a Moser family of curves is at least $c_{p} > 0$.

Minimal forbidden patterns of multi-dimensional shifts

2005

We study whether the entropy (or growth rate) of minimal forbidden patterns of symbolic dynamical shifts of dimension 2 or more, is a conjugacy invariant. We prove that the entropy of minimal forbidden patterns is a conjugacy invariant for uniformly semi-strongly irreducible shifts. We prove a weaker invariant in the general case.

Removable singularities for div v=f in weighted Lebesgue spaces

2018

International audience; Let $w\in L^1_{loc}(\R^n)$ be apositive weight. Assuming that a doubling condition and an $L^1$ Poincar\'e inequality on balls for the measure $w(x)dx$, as well as a growth condition on $w$, we prove that the compact subsets of $\R^n$ which are removable for the distributional divergence in $L^{\infty}_{1/w}$ are exactly those with vanishing weighted Hausdorff measure. We also give such a characterization for $L^p_{1/w}$, $1<p<+\infty$, in terms of capacity. This generalizes results due to Phuc and Torres, Silhavy and the first author.
