What Does it Feel Like to Use English? Empirical Evidence from EFL Students

2013

Recent studies concerning foreign language learning and teaching do not focus exclusively on the cognitive processes of the parties involved, but also on their emotional states, which are intricately interwoven with language learning and use. To date, many researchers have focused on the effects of language anxiety on the learners’ development of communicative competence. However, apart from anxiety, humans experience a wide range of other emotions that foreign/second language use evokes across many learning and communicative contexts. Research on affect in foreign language learning has been growing steadily and has been concerned not only with foreign language anxiety, but also with positi…

Throughout the course, we observed the students’ engagement in multilingual and multicultural activities. These observations suggest that simultaneous use of multiple languages in synchronous and asynchronous learn…

Contextual resources in meaning negotiations of a student pair in a web-based history project

2007

Abstract This study examines how one student pair working face-to-face at a computer and engaged in a web-based discussion environment negotiated meanings for their activity and what contextual resources they used in this negotiation process. The aim was also to study how the students themselves interpreted the learning activity. The subjects were two secondary school students (aged 15) participating in a web-based history project. Data was collected by various means in order to validate the findings. Linell's [(1998). Approaching dialogue. Talk, interaction and contexts in dialogical perspectives . Key competences and plurilingual education in the Valencian Region (Spain) : a curricular analysis of Primary Education

2020

The purpose of this work is to study the level of transversality of key competences in Primary Education in the Valencian Community. To this end, an analysis of the Decree 108/2014 cur-rently in effect will be carried out, along with determining the frequency with which each competence is worked on during this stage of education. The data obtained will be interpreted bearing in mind plurilingual programs and, more specifically, the basis of the methodological needs that are pursued in CLIL, the approach to teaching non-linguistic areas through a foreign language. Generally, the findings point to a lack of transversality in some of the competences, one of them being the linguistic competence…

The Role of Social Media in Societal Change : Cases in Finland of Fifth Estate Activity on Facebook

2015

The Internet can be used to reconfigure access to information and people in ways that can support networked individuals and enhance their relative communicative power vis-à-vis other individuals and institutions, such as by supporting collective action, sourcing of information, and whistle blowing. The societal and political significance of the Internet is a matter of academic debate, with some studies suggesting a powerful role in creating a “Fifth Estate,” and other studies challenging such claims. Research on this issue has not yet comprehensively focused on social network sites and those operating in a very liberal-democratic context. Based on an embedded case study of Facebook use in …

Between facts and norms: action research in the light of Jürgen Habermas's theory of communicative action and discourse theory of justice1

1998

Abstract An emphasis on democracy is typical of action research. Therefore, theories of modern democracy can be applied within the field of school development through action research. According to Jurgen Habermas, the promotion of democratic will formation requires the promotion of free and rational communicative action that is as free from manipulation as possible. Under ideal communicative conditions, consensus is achieved dialectically through the force of a better argument. The principles of rational argumentation have been developed in detail in Habermas's publications on discourse ethics and in The Theory of Communicative Action. He has recently developed his approach in a book entitl…
