Measurements methodology for the reliability evaluation of intelligent power modules

2014

The paper describes a measurement methodology for the reliability evaluation of new intelligent power electronics modules (IPMs). In particular, the evaluation of the IPMs immunity to radio frequency conducted disturbances has been performed, at different operating thermal conditions, designing a suitable measurement set up in a shielded room. Moreover, the thermal performances of the devices have been analyzed, setting up a proper experimental test bench. The measurements procedures are detailed described. © 2014 IEEE.

MAPK3 deficiency drives autoimmunity via DC arming.

2010

DC are professional APC that instruct T cells during the inflammatory course of EAE. We have previously shown that MAPK3 (Erk1) is important for the induction of T-cell anergy. Our goal was to determine the influence of MAPK3 on the capacity of DC to arm T-cell responses in autoimmunity. We report that DC from Mapk3(-/-) mice have a significantly higher membrane expression of CD86 and MHC-II and--when loaded with the myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein--show a superior capacity to prime naive T cells towards an inflammatory phenotype than Mapk3(+/+) DC. Nonetheless and as previously described, Mapk3(-/-) mice were only slightly but not significantly more susceptible to myelin oligodendrocyt…

Autoantibody depletion ameliorates disease in murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

2013

Much data support a role for central nervous system antigen-specific antibodies in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). The effects of inducing a decrease in (auto)antibody levels on MS or experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) through specific blockade of FcRn, however, remain unexplored. We recently developed engineered antibodies that lower endogenous IgG levels by competing for binding to FcRn. These Abdegs ("antibodies that enhance IgG degradation") can be used to directly assess the effect of decreased antibody levels in inflammatory diseases. In the current study, we show that Abdeg delivery ameliorates disease in an EAE model that is antibody dependent. Abdegs could…

Myelin-specific T cells also recognize neuronal autoantigen in a transgenic mouse model of multiple sclerosis

2008

T-cell recognition of autoantigens is important in the development of autoimmune disease. Now, Hartmut Wekerle and his colleagues demonstrate that organ-specific autoimmune responses may be driven by T cells that simultaneously respond to two different autoantigens found within the same target tissue. We describe here the paradoxical development of spontaneous experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in transgenic mice expressing a myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-specific T cell antigen receptor (TCR) in the absence of MOG. We report that in Mog-deficient mice (Mog−/−), the autoimmune response by transgenic T cells is redirected to a neuronal cytoskeletal self antigen, neur…

Microglial activation milieu controls regulatory T cell responses.

2013

Abstract Although mechanisms leading to brain-specific inflammation and T cell activation have been widely investigated, regulatory mechanisms of local innate immune cells in the brain are only poorly understood. In this study, to our knowledge we show for the first time that MHC class II+CD40dimCD86dimIL-10+ microglia are potent inducers of Ag-specific CD4+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) in vitro. Microglia differentially regulated MHC class II expression, costimulatory molecules, and IL-10 depending on the amount of IFN-γ challenge and Ag dose, promoting either effector T cell or Treg induction. Microglia-induced Tregs were functionally active in vitro by inhibiting Ag-specific prolifer…

A simulation model for electromagnetic transients in lightning protection systems

2002

This paper deals with the evaluation of electromagnetic transients in a lightning protection system (LPS). A field approach is used, based on the numerical solution of a modified version of the thin-wire electric field integral equation in the frequency domain. Time profiles of interesting electromagnetic quantities are computed by using a discrete fast Fourier transform algorithm. The model takes into account coupling effects among aerial parts and ground electrodes in order to correctly estimate the quantities which can determine electromagnetic hazard inside the LPS; transient touch and step voltages can be easily evaluated also taking into account the human body presence on the soil sur…

FDTD simulation for electromagnetic radiated emissions in 42 V vehicle electrical systems

2005

In this paper a full 3D approach, based on finite difference time domain method, is used to predict the electromagnetic radiated emissions from 42 V vehicle electrical loads. An experimental set-up has been arranged on purpose. A comparative analysis among measured and computed results is performed. The good agreement obtained among simulated and measured data enables to validate the numerical scheme. The proposed methodology contributes to predict electromagnetic emissions in the automotive environment since the design stage. Moreover, the proposed numerical tool can be used to define, for new vehicle electrical architectures, low cost test methods for electromagnetic compatibility and sui…

Electric Power Quality Evaluation in the Presence of Electromagnetic Emissions

2013

The measurements for the assessment of the electric power quality are often carried out in hostile electromagnetic environments. The aim of the paper is analyzing if and how both radiated and conducted electromagnetic emissions can disturb the measurement system used to quantify these disturbances. To achieve the target, an experimental approach is proposed, which, by means of a simple and fast test, allows establishing if the real electromagnetic environment, where power quality analysis is performed, can alter the measurements. © 2013 IEEE.

Experimental EMF characterization of a secondary substation

2015

This paper presents the results of the experimental EMC characterization of a new medium/low voltage (MV/LV) secondary substation, which was developed in the framework of the research project "NEW CAB ELARC". It has two MV/LV transformers, with total rated power of 1000 kVA. To perform the experimental characterization, firstly an analysis was performed of the Italian and European standards recommendations. Different approaches were highlighted and the most appropriate procedures were identified for the measurement of the magnetic fields emissions, at power systems frequency (50 Hz) in steady-state conditions. A dedicated test lab was set up for the secondary substation characterization. Th…
